Remove Notability Tag[edit]

@Marc Kupper: There are 79 wikipedia pages linked to this page, the Stanford Encyclopedia has something around 220 links or citations to him (I'm not sure exactly what my search is returning on that page, but clearly ET is being referenced by philosophers if you compare that to 0 Allan Watts returns on the same site.) ET is clearly notable. Please remove the tag. Thanks DolyaIskrina (talk) 22:54, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DolyaIskrina - I added the notice as the subject of this article does not seem to pass the Notability guidelines for academics that is at Wikipedia:Notability (academics).

I looked at Stanford Encyclopedia but still don't see evidence of notability per the guidelines. Searching for "Thompson, Evan" gets nine hits. All nine are because he's the co-author of a book or wrote an article that was published somewhere. None of these are evidence of notability. Searching for "Evan Thompson" gets 12 hits. Again it's because he's the co-author of a book or wrote an article that was published somewhere. With one exception, none of these are evidence of notability. The exception is the 12th item at https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/consciousness-intentionality/phenomenology-intentionalism.html where Evan Thompson gets a casual mention as having written an article in response to something else. You had done a search using Evan Thompson without the quotes meaning the search results included pages that have the word "Evan" anywhere on them and also the word "Thompson" anywhere on them. As both are common names the results contain items unrelated to Evan Thompson. Note that it's Alan Watts with one ell.
Wikipedia pages that link to an article can be useful to help hunt for evidence of notability but are not themselves evidence. Also, nearly all of the 79 hits on "what links here" are because the articles include the {{Philosophy of religion sidebar}} and Evan Thompson is listed as one a Buddhist Philosopher of religion within that sidebar.

Please see Wikipedia:Notability (academics). We need to show that Evan Thompson meets at least one of the criteria mentioned. --Marc Kupper|talk 00:42, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Marc Kupper: Thanks for the notability link and the search tips. I think he satisfies several criteria for both WP:ACADEMIC and WP:AUTHOR. But I think the most cut-and-dry one for our purposes now would that he is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Which means they consider him to have "made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life" which satisfies WP:ACADEMIC #3 Click here and read paragraph 3 or read below:

WP:ACADEMIC:"3. The person has been an elected member of a highly selective and prestigious scholarly society or association (e.g., a National Academy of Sciences or the Royal Society) or a fellow of a major scholarly society which reserves fellow status as a highly selective honor (e.g., Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers)."
