Winter Park station (Amtrak: WPK) is a train station in Winter Park, Florida. It is served by SunRail, a commuter rail line serving Greater Orlando, and by Amtrak's Silver Service, a pair of intercity lines which travel between Miami and New York City.
The current station was built in 2014, coinciding with the introduction of SunRail service. Prior stations in the city, dating back to 1882, were constructed by the South Florida Railroad and Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.
History[edit]
Previous stations[edit]
Rail lines passing through Winter Park were first built by the South Florida Railroad (SFR), which ran between Orlando and Sanford, in 1880. A small depot in Winter Park was built in 1882.[4]
A newer station, consisting of both a passenger station and a freight depot, was built in 1913 by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL), which had acquired the SFR in 1902.
A newer station was built by the ACL in 1962. The station was directly adjacent to Central Park, a municipal green space, and was also one block away from Park Avenue, a street lined with upscale boutiques and restaurants. Passenger service was moved to this station, but the older station remained in active use for freight until 1982, when it was purchased by the city. It is now used as a venue for a weekly farmer's market, weddings, and other special events.[5][6]
Current station[edit]
On February 14, 2013, Pillar Construction Group of Clermont, FL began work on a new $1.2 million station building, which replaced the 1962 era depot. The new station, which was designed in the Craftsman style to better blend with the city's architecture, includes an improved lobby, artwork and larger restrooms.[7][8] The new depot was primarily funded through a $950,000 grant from the Federal Transit Administration's Bus & Bus Facilities program, which was matched with more than $237,000 in local funding from the city.[7] Following the grand opening of the new station on March 3, 2014, the historic ACL depot was closed and demolished.[9][10][11][12]
The new station was built to accommodate the introduction of the SunRail commuter rail station, which began service on May 1, 2014. Unlike most SunRail stations, which feature canopies consisting of white aluminum poles supporting sloped green roofs, Winter Park's canopies have traditional white gabled roofs. It also includes ticket vending machines, ticket validators, emergency call boxes, drinking fountains, and separate platforms designed for passengers in wheelchairs.
