Ignoring the above, this is going to be where I experiment with improvements upon the existing List of churches in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. Someday I would like to make similar lists of the various Eastern Catholic—especially Ukrainian and Ruthenian—churches around Allegheny County or their entire respective jurisdictions. I would like to make either the current or future list to look more like List of Eastern Orthodox churches in Toronto than the strange purple and yellow non-spanning table system currently used on most lists of Catholic churches in various American dioceses.

Churches in the RC Diocese of Pittsburgh[edit]

This is a list of church buildings actively maintained or owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, including parochial jurisdiction and a brief history for each.

The diocese's churches are organized among of 63 parishes, many containing several churches, which are themselves organized into two vicariates: the North Vicariate and South Vicariate.[1] The mother church of the diocese is St. Paul Cathedral in the city's Oakland neighborhood.

The diocese was founded in 1843 and has gone through periods of significant growth and decline along with the population of Pittsburgh and in response to the clergy sexual abuse scandals that were heavily centered in western Pennsylvania.[2] The declining population resulted in a 2018 decision to merge its 188 parishes down to 57 by July 2023. The diocese currently numbers over 600,000 Catholics, though only a fraction attend Mass weekly or meet other key indicators of involvement in the church.[3][4][5] The consolidation of parishes has led to the sale and closure of many church buildings formerly owned by the diocese after they have been "relegated to profane use," while other church buildings remain under diocesan ownership though are rarely or never used for offering Mass.[6]
