Removed definitions from dab page[edit]

I removed the following entries:

  • A metaphor to describe an obstacle of minor significance which temporarily slows, but does not stop or continue to retard momentum or progress.
(e.g. "According to the latest reports, the political campaign of Senator Jane Doe was well on the road to her successful re-election until it encountered a speed bump last month when the expenses associated with her recent congressional fact-finding trip to Hawaii were questioned by her opponent. However, according to the Chairman of the Committee to Watch the Volcano For Safety Hazards, she provided documentation that all expenditures on the trip were legitimate expenses, and the public furore over the issue soon subsided after the Senator showed pieces of lava at a recent press conference.")
  • A term used to describe a person who hampers normal tasks or operations.
(e.g. "Steve is such a speed bump, he's more trouble than he's worth at the restaurant." or in a hybrid manner "Around the restaurant the new manager is such a Steve bump.")

...for several reasons: disambiguation pages should not contain material not found in an actual WP article (other than redlink-ish sorts of seed material), there are no reasonable destinations for either of these entries (metaphor has no discussion of "speed bump" as a metaphor), and these are really more dictionary definitions than encyclopedia entries.

The best place for some variant of this material is probably Wiktionary. Another possibility might be to add a "speed bump as a metaphor" section to the existing speed bump article. The typical rule of thumb for notability would apply: if you've got a good citation, that should guide where in WP this goes (but not on a dab page). If there's no good citation, this shouldn't be in WP at all.--NapoliRoma (talk) 17:44, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
