The result of the move request was: page moved to Scenic viewpoint. (non-admin closure) TonyBallioni (talk) 00:32, 27 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OverlookViewing point – "Overlook" in this context is listed by the Oxford Dictionary of English as a North American regional word, whereas "viewpoint" and "viewing point" are not only more common, but also international, thus consistent with WP:ENGVAR and WP:COMMONNAME. "Viewpoint" appears to be the most common (but of course can also mean "point of view" so it's hard to confirm), but is already a disambiguation page, so "viewing point" is the proposal. • Move to Scenic viewpoint for improved clarity and more natural phrasing. —BarrelProof (talk) 19:57, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to Scenic viewpoint per BarrelProof. That is likely the clearest title. "Overlook" is not so clear a title, since it can also mean to fail to see something that should have been seen. bd2412 T 20:40, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment I think we're in agreement that the current title needs changing, but I'm just not sure about "scenic viewpoint"; Google Books NGram Viewer suggests "viewing point" is about 12 times more common. Another option might be "Viewpoint (xxxxxx)", but I'm not sure what we'd put in brackets: scenery? topography? landscape? tourism? --Bermicourt (talk) 21:17, 17 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
      • Perhaps the NGram string is more common, but is that string always referring to this topic? I'll stick with "Scenic viewpoint", since to me it is much more clear and natural. It also needs no parenthetical disambiguation. —BarrelProof (talk) 03:49, 18 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Scenic overlook; oppose Scenic viewpoint et al. If the current title is to be jettisoned, it should remain a North American variant per WP:RETAIN/WP:ENGVAR. —  AjaxSmack  00:00, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • Comment. I don't think WP:ENGVAR applies, because we're not changing the title from one regional variant of English to another. Likewise WP:RETAIN doesn't apply because that's more about retaining the original English variant within an article e.g. if the article entitled "hill" is written in American English at the outset, then we don't come along and change it to New Zealand English. However, what I am proposing is retitling the article to a universal term in line with WP:COMMONALITY which says "Prefer vocabulary common to all varieties of English. Insisting on a single term or a single usage as the only correct option does not serve the purposes of an international encyclopedia." I apologise if I didn't make that clear in the initial proposal.--Bermicourt (talk) 16:57, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • "Scenic viewpoint" is North American English, and possibly more so than "Scenic overlook". Perhaps there are regional variations. —BarrelProof (talk) 00:35, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    • The most common and most international name is probably "viewpoint", but unfortunately that can also mean "point of view". Hence "viewpoint" is a dab page and because Wikipedia bends over backwards to avoid disambiguation using brackets, we're struggling around trying to find a two-word phrase that's universally acceptable. Perhaps this article should become "viewpoint" and we move the dab page to "Viewpoint (disambiguation)"? --Bermicourt (talk) 16:39, 23 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support move to Scenic viewpoint per BarrelProof. Clear, concise title, and doesn't favour one region over another.  — Amakuru (talk) 10:19, 26 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
