Original Research and Name Origin[edit]

Grabois is my surname. Original unpublished research into genealogy by me and others has led us to conclude that the surname for those of Ashkenazi Jewish descent originated in the city of Kishinev, Moldova. I assume that this original research means it's not valid for inclusion on the main page, right? A copy of a letter from a distant (and unknown to me) relative gives the origin of the name itself. Despite looking French, this name is actually the transliteration of a Russian name, with varying pronunciations depending on when one's ancestors emigrated from Moldova and to where they departed. Anyone know how I can formally document some of this here?

My research (really just a Google search and looking into family trees online) also shows that there are or at least have been unrelated families with the Grabois surname in Cajun Louisiana, descendants of French settlers in Montreal and eastern Canada. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wizardimps (talkcontribs) 02:32, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've had a look, and I found the following:
  • This book, [1], could be a good source, if it's an actual book and not some kind of machine generated stuff
  • This site, [2] and [3], talks about the history, but I wouldn't know how to assess its reliability as a source
  • These 3 sources talk about the current prevalence: [4], [5] and [6]
Somebody who knows a lot about these things is User:Xezbeth, I'm going to leave a message on her talk page to see if she can give us her opinion.

Genealogical information not backed by reliable sources would indeed be original research. Surname history would be fine provided it's about the name and not about various families that have the name. These talk pages are extremely low traffic so you might want to ask on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Anthroponymy or maybe even Wikipedia:Teahouse for more opinions. —Xezbeth (talk) 05:12, 3 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
