--Aubrey.Hunter (talk) 02:04, 14 December 2016 (UTC) Coming to this Intro to Hip Hop Culture and History class, I did not know what to expect. I learned that hip hop is a movement and has changed overtime. There are four elements to hip hop, DJing, MCing, B-boying and Graffitiy; no to mention Afrika Bambatta who is the god father of hip hop, coined the fifth element which is "knowledge to self". It was designed to empower members of oppressed groups. Which correlates to the assignments in this course, it helped me empower to think more critically and challenge myself. Deliberate practice helps prepare and have a better understanding in the work that you do. In this course, deliberate practice was key for me. It helps me to think more critically and prepares me for the next class. It gives a better perception and knowledge to your work. In the 'They say/I say' template, it was a way to format an opinion paper and being able to explore your thoughts. After doing that format for certain assignments you begin to get an understanding, which makes you think even more differently. Reading Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop I learned a lot of politics and different views of the hip hop culture from Ice T, Kool Herc, B-boy dancers and even gangs that changed into a positive movement to help the community;such as the Ghetto Brothers, Lord of the Flies and even the Black Panthers. Reading this book gave me insight of how hip hop was a revolution. When I share this information to friends and family I want them to have a clear conscious that hip hop is not gangster music that had no motivation, it was an actual movement that was formed during the 1970's in the South Bronx within the African and Latino community. In the cyphers that was taken place in class, I learned how us students flow differently, and have different perspectives which brings more interest to the class. The Foucault's remix being split up to our groups and projecting our voices to explain our opinion what hip hop is divided to, allowed us to express ourselves and learn from one another.Wikipedia was always viewed as a source that is not valid because it changes constantly. I believe Wikipedia and our way of editing gave us some type of confidence, in showing the world what we know and being able to share what our knowledge is. Giving us the opportunity to edit especially on hip hop was a challenge for us, however a learning experience that was able to be shared with others on Wikipedia. I believe studying the field of hip hop history and culture is important because society is also changing and so is the music around us. I feel that if people can rap to certain music or beat, they should have an idea of who or where they are getting it from. Professor, you personally helped me challenge my thinking, and feel important in the class, not much of college classes can do that. I have learned a lot from this course, that i honestly didn't think I would.[reply]
