What do you need from the video player ?[edit]

I'm currently working on replacing our current video player (by Kaltura inc and known as mwEmbed) in favor of a more modern, better maintained and more popular one (by Brightcove, Inc, known as Video.js). There is a demo available (slowness is due to tools lab not being too suitable for these kinds of demos). Many features are still missing, that will require writing plugins, custom configuration etc, but most of that is on my radar. I have some general questions around people's needs for a player however, that are more difficult to answer:

  1. How do you envision playback of the the smaller thumbnail inclusions into articles ?
  2. How do you envision playback on the Category page ?
  3. How do you envision playback of sound badges ?
  4. How do you envision playback of pronunciations ?

Descriptions are nice, and even better would be if you have links of good examples in other websites, for these interactions, which are actually rather uncommon for players. Additionally:

  1. Is there a desire for playlists ?
  2. Is there a desire for "Related" clips ?

I am requesting comments on the issue of non-free logos used for giving credit in freely-licensed videos. Thoughts from others on this issue are requested at

@Heba Shroukh: Wikipedia:Video links are sometimes a nuisance, but many articles have such links in the Wikipedia:External links section at the bottom. There could even be a separate subsection for video links for some articles. A sidebar for this purpose, however, is unlikely. I don't know if any Wikipedia editor is in charge of such programs of cooperation, but you can propose specific links in the WP:Talk pages of appropriate articles, to find out whether that specific link will be proper. A new newsletter directory is out![edit]

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Wikivideos[edit]

Hi! I just proposed meta:Wikivideos, a project that aims to generate video content using wikitext. I thought you may find it interesting.

It's based on Extension:WikiVideos, an extension that basically introduces <wikivideo> tags very similar to <gallery> tags, but that output videos rather than galleries (basically, an automated voice reads the text aloud while each image is shown, but there's much more too).

You can read more and test it out at https://wikivideos.org, cheers!

PS: If you feel like replying, please consider doing so at at meta:Wikivideos or at https://wikivideos.org (depending on the nature of your comment) to try to keep the discussion together. Thanks! Sophivorus (talk) 03:43, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
