Slow edit warring by Mvcg66b3r (talk · contribs)

Since I was diagnosed with macular degeneration in 2022, I've been working with the WP:WCAG in an effort to improve accessibility in articles across Wikipedia. I have been trying out different scripts to aid in my editing. Recently I've been working on improving US radio and television articles, and rarely seem to run into problems with the radio articles. The television articles are a different story. Mvcg66b3r (talk · contribs), if not outright reverting my work, quickly changes the article to reflect how they think it should be: diff 1, diff 2, diff 3 dif 4. From my perspective it seems Mvcg66b3r (talk · contribs) is acting as if they own TV station articles, it's discouraging to me when they accuse me of being a "picky" editor. I'm only here to help build and maintain an encyclopedia that's accessible to all, not deal with petty edit-warring. - BlueboyLINY (talk) 03:22, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

First of all, I didn't know about your condition. I take back my "picky editor" remark. Second, I don't intend to be "owning" articles. The first three diffs are minor reversions; Houston and Houston, Texas point to the same article. As another active editor in the space, I've done a lot of work to improve accessibility in our topic area. More specifically, I wanted to respond to the diffs mentioned by @BlueboyLINY. Obviously, you are aware of the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Lead section#Listing large US cities by state in broadcasting article leads since you participated in it. I personally prefer the shorter approach for "world cities", but the question is unsettled thanks to low participation in the discussion, and the fact is that right now the style is the other way. And I will advocate for television station to be linked in sentence 1, no matter what; it's the X in Y type of the article, and it so obviously merits linking that it should not even be a subject of debate.

Our lead sentences can get odd, and it doesn't help that even veteran editors in other fields can trip over the way things are worded or titled in this one. When WWJ-TV hit the Main Page last week, a non-topic editor raised the question of whether it is a TV station "in" Detroit because neither its studio nor its transmitter are actually in the city, though it is the city of license.

I don't like saying this publicly, but I feel it's merited to say it because those of us who have worked with him a lot can vouch for it. Mvcg is a very diligent editor who has done so much antivandalism work on our articles and means well, but communication has been a routine weakness of his. Thank you for your input. I recognize my own communication weakness (odd coming from someone who worked for radio and tv stations for fifty years, albeit most of those years were in engineering or audio/video editing) it's something I continue to work on. I guess it's a case of getting off on the wrong foot with Mvcg66b3r all those years ago when I first encountered him. I'm aware of his anti-vandalism work and do appreciate it. I guess when you have two editors who are weak communicators you need a mediator. Which is why I came here to air my grievance rather than try to communicate on his talk page. And I certainly didn't want to get ARV involved, so again thank you Sammi for being our mediator.

Going forward, i'll be tweaking the script edits to manually leave the links in the infobox and lead. As for the am/p.m. issue I'm neither here nor there on that, and it would be too time consuming to correct manually. FCC callsigns vs. ICAO codes

User:Mseingth2133444 recently moved KPDX to KPDX-TV without consensus, saying it was to remove ambiguity with Portland International Airport (KPDX is its ICAO airport code). I moved it further to KPDX (TV) as there's no "-TV" suffix in the official callsign. I did this for another station, KASN to KASN (TV) (KASN is the ICAO code for Talladega Municipal Airport). Do you think these articles should go back to their original titles (since ICAO codes are rarely commonly used)? Mvcg66b3r (talk) 17:35, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

Going to disagree, the ICAO code would likely be used more (by pilots, etc.) instead of the FCC code which would only be known to who? Portlanders? I'll agree to moving it back if this reaches consenus. Mseingth2133444 (Did I mess up? Let me know here) 20:45, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

Setting aside my annoyance about overcoverage of anything with a business license in Portland on en.wiki, the TV station>airport here, which is simply known as PDX locally without the K casually. A hatnote on top the article for channel 49 easily handles those looking for PDX, and it should be moved back to KPDX. Nate • (chatter) 21:48, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

For the general public (our audience here), the ICAO code is at best a tertiary identifier for the airport, after its name and the IATA code, whereas the call sign is the primary identifier for the broadcast facility (whether TV or radio). Hatnote on the TV station if there are only the two uses, or disambiguation page if there are more than two - that's pretty much been standard in these cases for as long as I've been around (which is way too long at this point).
