I thought having an official icon in the way of WP:MILHIST and other projects would be cool so I went over to Wikimedia commons and checked out some options. Here are some that I found.

If anyone has any others then please post them here. --Cheif Captain 20:45, 21 April 2007 (UTC)

I like the Olympic pictogram best. I don't like the one that is just a splash, it's kinda awkward. The first fish is nice, the dolphin could work, but it makes us look like we were WikiProject Dolphin. The blue fish scares me... --wpktsfs 21:48, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

I found these at 2008 Summer Olympics

The only problem is that they are copyright Olympics, and chances are I'm breaking some law by having them on this talk page. However, if anyone could make an image that combines the likeliness of these images, it would be great! --wpktsfs 22:12, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

See proposed userboxes below for free use logos. I might draw something up and scan it... something that includes all water sports... I don't know... I have a lot on my plate in the real world right now. --wpktsfs 18:53, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
  • found these at commons, but they only show one water sport each. -Lemonflash 20:10, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

    Lists

Created List of divers, List of synchronized swimmers and List of water polo players for the project. // SMARTSKAFT | ¿ 11:27, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Great work. If you could keep that as updated as possible, that would be great! --wpktsfs 21:49, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

    Picture of Swimming article

I've always HATED the picture of the "breaststroke swimmer" on the top of the Swimming article. Howver, I have never bothered to do anything about it. I am currently browsing through club photos to find something more appropriate. I have a Team Canada swimmer on my team, so perhaps I could find something great. Any suggestions, oppositions? Tingalex 21:41, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

I HATE THAT PICTURE WITH A PASSION. Please do whatever you want with it. I would rather have a picture of someone standing on land than have that picture. Haha... anyways yes please. I think that the picture of the swimmer on the Front Crawl article would look nice on the swimming article, but you are welcome to find one of your own! --wpktsfs 21:45, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
Thank God you hate it as well. Hopefully I can find something great soon enough. Tingalex 22:25, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
I hate that picture too. The front crawl one looks all right. --Lemonflash 00:43, 26 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, that's a bit better. Sorry I havent't found something great yet...I've been really busy with my music. I still plan on finding something awesome. Tingalex 01:39, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

    Userboxes

All of the userbox templates are not ones. --Lemonflash 00:37, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

I use my own custom userboxes for all of mine. Mabey something simple just using text would do.

    Like this:

    swimThis user is a swimmer
wpThis user is a waterpolo player
    diveThis user is a diver

    Cheif Captain 04:37, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Or like this (using the icon series seen above):

    This user is a swimmer
This user is a synchronized swimmer
This user is a water polo player
    This user is a diver

    Cheif Captain 04:40, 26 April 2007 (UTC)

Research help for a sticky BLP

Do we have any good sources for current and past Canadian swimming records, British Columbia specifically possibly high school age, supposedly still held in 2007. We've got a high attention, high controversy, BLP article where whether or not there were such records is being questioned. If true, it should probably remain in the article. So we need sources. Any help will be appreciated. GRBerry 20:26, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Hmm Swiminfo is the place to look, if anything at all exists. They are by far teh most detailed swimming database on earth and they do have results of US high school comps. Maybe not Canada though. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 00:04, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
I failed to find Canada records on that site, and their search feature requires premium access. Oh well. How significant is the "British Columbia Summer Swimming Association" http://www.bcssa.bc.ca/? We've managed to source some still held records within that association. And what would be the national association/league/competition for Canada? GRBerry 04:16, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
I looked in these numbers. I guess if those times were in long course pools, then they would be ok, since the fastest guy is 50.2s over 100m free. If it was short course, the times would be pretty bad. Canada does have open championships like most countries, for selecting olympics and World champsionships teams. Help request: GA backlog

Hello. There has been a large backlog at the Good Article Nominations page for a while. Since most of my editing is in the Sports and Recreation category, that is the area that I am currently focusing on. To try to cut down on the backlog, I'm approaching projects with the request that members from that project review two specific articles over the next week. My request to WikiProject Swimming is to try to find time to review Stuart Elliott (footballer born 1977) and New Year's Revolution (2007). If these are already reviewed by someone else or you have time for another review, it would be great if you could help out with another article. Of course, this is purely voluntary. If you could help, though, it would help out a lot and be greatly appreciated. The basic instructions for reviewing articles is found at WP:GAN and the criteria is found at WP:WIAGA. I recently began reviewing articles, and I've found it fairly enjoyable and I've learned a lot about how to write high quality articles. Best wishes, GaryColemanFan (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

    Dick Hannula

I've just created Dick Hannula, mainly to get rid of a redlink on Tacoma, Washington. I figure the folks in this project would be able to expand this stub of an article more, add the correct categories, etcetera, etcetera. Have at it. Travisl (talk) 21:00, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

    Project vision.

I've recently joined this project and it appears to me that this project isn't that active. I'm going to try and change this. I've been trying to tag articles with our template hence adding them to the project. Ive compiled a list of over 6000 articles that fall into the scope of our project, so it's going to take a while to tag them all. I started by using AWB but realized its going to take me too long, so ive put in a request for a bot account that will use AWB and it will just automate the process and make it a heap faster. The request can be found [[1]]. If it's approved it will initially be used to tag the talk pages, but after that, i imagine that it will be used to maintain the articles and do spelling checks etc) all using AWB.

I think the first steep is identifying all the articles, and then slowly but surely assesing them and all that sort of stuff. And fixing the articles as we go.

We just need a vision and goals and we'll succeed. Any comments about my statement just leave them here. Cheers Printer222 (talk) 12:07, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

    • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
    • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
    • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Articles requiring work/review

Can we create a list of articles requiring work or review? For example, I enhanced the Lea Maurer page and would like others to add photos from her swimming career, add information on the important swimmers coached by Lea (e.g. several in this year's Olympics), assess it for quality and importance, suggest additional changes required if any. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Msft watch (talkcontribs) 15:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

    Articles flagged for cleanup

Currently, 2851 articles are assigned to this project, of which 282, or 9.9%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place a template on your project page.

    Records in swimming

I'm working on an initiative to improve the consistency of presentation across the series of records in swimming articles, a subject well within the remit of this WikiProject. Please join us at User:Yboy83/Records in swimming project, either to contribute, or give views on what we're doing. The current topics of discussion include:

    • Should we include split times?
    • Is it important to note if records were not set during a final?
    • Where should the meet name be displayed?

Also looking for a little help with setting up some templates - I've done the basics, but not want certain columns of the records table and certain other parameters to be optional. Yboy83 (talk) 11:02, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

    Article titles

It appears that article titles in Category:European LC Championships 1997 violate the MOS. Should they be renamed to match the convention in e.g. Category:Swimming events at the 2008 Summer Olympics? Also: should uppercase names of swimming styles (e.g. "100 metre Freestyle") be changed to lowercase elsewhere (infoboxes in particular)? GregorB (talk) 12:21, 7 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Swimming

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:47, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Diving - what would it take to get to GA or A?

Subcats to nationality categories of swimmers

I think we've seen an inflation of subcats to the nationality categories of swimmers, e.g. Category:American swimmers which includes Category:American butterfly swimmers, Category:American breaststroke swimmers, Category:American backstroke swimmers, Category:American freestyle swimmers and Category:American medley swimmers. I don't think we need to categorise the articles by preferred stroke and demonym, athletes and footballers aren't categorised by preferred event or position together with the demonym. // SMARTSKAFT | ¿ 20:44, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. Many swimmers swim more than one stroke, then you end up with the category list on a biography article getting longer and longer - I'd say a long list of contents of a category is more appropriate than multiple categories at the bottom of an article. Furthermore, swimming biography articles are already categorised by category:stroke (all nationalities) - surely the point of such category is to group and compare other swimmers from other countries who swim the same stroke. Categorising by stroke and demonym prevents this. Yboy83 (talk) 22:08, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we shall put it up on WP:CfD once for all? SMARTSKAFT | ¿ 21:23, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

    Milestone Announcements

    Announcements
    • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
    • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
    • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 22:22, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

    Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:41, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Articles requiring attention or possible deletion

The following list of articles are being considered as unable to meet requirements for inclusion in Wikipedia. They require attention to either:

    • Prove notability with sufficient references
    • Merge into another article
    • Expand
    • Provide more links to it to ensure it is no longer an orphan
    • or Delete.

Feel free to add to the list any other swimming-related articles you find on your travels around Wikipedia that also require significant attention or possible deletion.

    Comments

I have started the list with a selection of articles I have uncovered during my WP Swimming assessment spree in the last few days - I have already WP:PRODed a couple that I feel are particularly deserving. Yboy83 (talk) 19:24, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

    List

Swimming / Human swimming - how did we miss this?

I have today discovered that the primary article of this project was moved from Swimming to Human swimming on 30 March 2009. It appears it was proposed in January after a user question placed on the talk page in October 2008, yet the move was made without further discussion or consultation from any WikiProjects. It is noted that greater than 6,000 articles contain links to Swimming, with a guess that >95% are related to swimming as a sport, and now each and every one of those links now points to the wrong article.

What should our response to this be?

WP:WikiProject Sports has for a long time had the suggestion of splitting the original article into Swimming (sport) and Swimming (for the general activity). Perhaps this should be the basis for a compromise - move the content of Human swimming related to the competitive sport to Swimming (sport), and the remaining content about "human swimming" back to Swimming. This would then mean a fair amount of minor article editing to get articles linking to the right place, but at least "Swimming (sport)" is a more appropriate article name than "Human swimming".

    Any thoughts? Yboy83 (talk) 13:26, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

I only worked it out when I was editing the template to accept task forces ({{WP Swimming}}). I meant to tell you but I fell asleep! Don't know what to do, although Swimming (sport) does sound better. OnHoliday 19:00, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

    Nutrition

I added a section to this page regarding sports nutrition. I added it because i think it is very important for people to understand how important it is for swimmers to receive a healthy amount of nutrients. Additionally, I thought that the addition helps to complete the competitive swimming side. NutritionFanNutritionfan (talk) 05:36, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

    Swim (search autocomplete cleanup)

Continuing to try to remove the unnecessary duplication/triplication of what shows in the autocomplete dropdown when typing in "swim" I am planning to PROD two redirect pages:

I am proposing this because I think the autocomplete dropdown is much more useful when there is a reasonable list of what actual articles are out there, rather than multiple possible permutations of caps or pluralization (similar to the case with the 6 redirects of Swim / Feeder albums that I already cleaned up). Wanted to post it here so that if anyone has a major concern the can de-prod or discuss it here. Thanks.     JCutter  talk to me }     01:41, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

    Revival of this project?

    Hi all,

This project seems to have been largely inactive for a while, though the number of swimming articles is continually rising - currently some 3300 article are tagged with the project banner. I think it's time for a revival in order to get return some order and standardisation for this growing number of articles.

    Some tasks I've done today:

    • Archive this talk page.
    • Place a WP:Bot Request to catch up on tagging of articles with the project banner.

There are too many articles to be managed as a whole project. How about we create some work-groups to deal with different aspects:

    • Swimming
      • Biographies
      • Competitions
    • Water polo
    • Synchro
    • Diving
    • Other

Before that though, I propose completion of the following tasks:

    • Project banner tagging.
    • Quick assessments of all articles, ensuring there are no articles in Category:Unassessed swimming articles - this will allow an easy view of newly created articles.
    • During this quick assessment, remove banner from any articles which don't really meet the project scope. WP:BB if necessary.
    • Create a list of dubious articles / articles for deletion.

    Yboy83 (talk) 09:57, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

I like your idea of work groups for different sports, and I will help out as much as I can. However, I think a biography work group for swimmers is covered by the sports and games work group of WP:BIO, although with the amount of articles they need to improve it may be better doin it ourselves, instead of them being neglected in favour of Football biographies. OnHoliday 21:42, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
Following up from your message on my talk page, feel free to start the process of setting them up. During my browse through the articles under the project's auspices in the last few days, the articles could broadly be put into the following groupings:
    • Basics - strokes, equipment, history, ...
    • Venues
    • Organisations
    • Swimming records
    • Swimming biographies - too many to mention!
    • Swimming competitions
    • Water polo
    • Diving
    • Synchro - relatively few
    • Lifesaving
Perhaps we start with work groups (do I actually mean task-forces?) for 'Water polo', 'Diving' and 'Swimming competitions' as they should be quite manageable in size. Yboy83 (talk) 08:48, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'll do that and put the work groups (I fancy a change from task forces) on the Swimming template. OnHoliday 16:13, 13 April 2009 (UTC)
How's this going? Am I right in thinking that water polo is ready to go? Is it just case of adding "|water-polo=yes" to the project banners? Perhaps I'll place a bot request to populate. Yboy83 (talk) 17:35, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes, thats it. OnHoliday 18:25, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Righty-o! The bot has completed it's project banner tagging task, and we now have approx 7,500 pages under the auspices of this project (of which about 5900 articles, 1200 categories, 500 templates). Time now to get assessing the unassessed articles, and keeping on top of new article creations (for example via User:AlexNewArtBot/SwimmingSearchResult). There are currently 1200 unassessed articles, and it would be great to get this down to a more manageable size! The bot which was supposed to add "water-polo=yes" to the banners on the appropriate talk pages missed a fair number of articles, so keep an eye out for these too! GAN backlog reduction - Sports and recreation

As you may know, we currently have 400 good article nominations, with a large number of them being in the sports and recreation section. As such, the waiting time for this is especially long, much longer than it should be. As a result of this, I am asking each sports-related WikiProject to review two or three of these nominations. If this is abided by, then the backlog should be cleared quite quickly. Some projects nominate a lot but don't review, or vice-versa, and following this should help to provide a balance and make the waiting time much smaller so that our articles can actually get reviewed! Comments requested on Infobox Swimming Pool

As part of a collaboration on creating articles for Category:Lidos in the UK, a Swimming Pool Infobox has been created (for an example in use, see Broomhill_Pool, Ipswich). Biggest Need for Swimming ATM

The biggest thing we need to work on right now is to update the individual swimmers' pages for their World Records held, because the pages are WAY out of date. The reason I think this is a priority is because it is in fact false information on the pages that needs to be corrected, rather than pages needing to be improved or added. Also, several places I have seen someone's page saying that they have a record (200X-present) but also having an incumbent listed. With how many World Records that have been broken in the past 2 years (now around 225), we've done a great job keeping up the World Records pages, but this has not been carried over to the individual sports' pages.HatBucketBalls (talk) 04:17, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

I am agreed that this is an issue. More records are expected to be broken this weekend at the final leg of the World Cup in Singapore. I believe that after that the aim should be to get all the record progression articles up to date, since the succession boxes of which you talk link to these articles, and the information contained within will be useful in ensuring the individual swimmers' articles are correct and up-to-date.
On a related note, a discussion will be required on how to go about recording swimming records depending on the possible options FINA could choose regarding non-textile world records etc. This however is a duscussion for the list of world records article.

    Swimming pool sanitation

I've just added the article Swimming pool sanitation to this WikiProject; it needs a lot of work and, I believe, a great deal of uncited information contained within it is not encyclopedic and some of it is not even correct. For example, I think it makes no sense to lead off with a detailed discussion of specific pool equipment -- although a shorter version of that probably should be somewhere else in the article. I'd like to invite anyone here to take a look at the article and try their hand at editing it. I am declining to be bold in my edits because I have a potential conflict in that its subject matter is of interest to a client of my employer. For example, they have pointed out to me that chlorine is not mentioned until the second half, although chlorine systems are very common. I tend to agree, but I've done only a small amount of work on the article and want to see if anyone else might be interested in the article or, if you would, offer advice and feedback on edits I may make further. Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Swimming/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 69 articles to be referenced, a 16.9% reduction from last week. Great work! The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:51, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Swimming articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Swimming articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

    Use of flag icons

Greetings, swimming fans. I work principally on University of Florida and Florida Gators articles, and I have been gradually cleaning up and improving the 50+ Florida Gators swimmers articles, such as "Mary Wayte." Until recently, all of the articles had the  United States flag icon included in the nationality field in the Infobox swimmer template, well, that is until an IP user began deleting all of them in the past month. Has a new consensus been reached on the inclusion/removal of the flag icons from the swimmer articles, or has this IP decided to remove the flag icons unilaterally? Please advise. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 02:16, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

I think we have tolerated these icons in info boxes and sister cities/twin cities, but they are deprecated in other matter. It is really an encyclopedia, not a nationalistic trumpet. Might have this sort of thing in an almanac, for example. See WP:MOSFLAG. Student7 (talk) 12:47, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Student7, yes, but Wikipedia has traditionally used the flag icons for sports people who participate in international competition for clarity, including soccer, track & field, swimming and other Olympic sports, and this use is consistent with with WP:MOSFLAG. Moreover, it's clearly not an American "nationalism" thing; the German and Australian swimmer articles, as well as the international swimming competition articles all uniformly use the flag icons. All of the World Cup soccer/football articles include the flag icons, and again these athletes compete for their respective national teams. Clearly, the use of the flag icons for American football players and the like would be gratuitous and would impart no additional information, because American football players do not compete for the United States on a national team. The best international swimmers, of course, are invariably members of their respective national teams. As long as the Olympics, World Aquatics championships and other international swimming competitions hoist the medalists' national flags and play their national anthems, I think we risk ignoring a very real aspect of these international competitions. My question was intended to determine the present Swimming Wikiproject consensus on point, from regular contributors to the WP swimming articles, as we have a single IP user who seems to be on a crusade to delete all flag icons from the present generation of international swimmer bios. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 13:18, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
First and foremost, I'm the IP user. Putting the  United States flag is redundant and not correct in the "Nationality" field. The flag icon, on most swimming articles, is already above the medals. Which I think is the appropriate place to put the flag icon. Why have the same flag icons so close to eachother? It's redundant. Nationality does not mean the country they represent or represented. That is a common issue with most swimming articles and I'm trying to fix it. Ryan Lochte for example. He's not United States nationality. He's American. Ian Thorpe is of Australian nationality. Not Australia nationality. That needs to be corrected. No consensus were made for my edits. I just took the initiative.Philipmj24 (talk) 17:44, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
Philip, yes, the generally recognized nationality adjective form for the noun "United States" is "American." However, every wiki-linked instance of "American," as used to describe a citizen/resident/native of the United States, is supposed to be properly pipe-linked to "United States" for clarity. In common international usage, the word "American" is inherently ambiguous: many residents of Canada and Latin America consider themselves to be "American," too. In order to draw the distinction, many Latin Americans refer to U.S. residents as "norteamericanos," so we have a small usage problem. Some non-U.S. residents even get a little peeved by U.S. residents' perceived expropriation of the term. The "American" Wikipedia page is a disambiguation page, with two dozen different uses and another half-dozen disambiguation links, which speaks volumes.
All of that having been said, if your issue is the infobox template's use of the country's noun form versus the use of an adjective form to describe the swimmer's nationality, but the project consensus is to continue to use the flag icons for international swimmers, then I suggest we change the "Template:Infobox Swimmer" field name from "Nationality" to "Country" and thereby eliminate the minor noun-vs.-adjective terminology issue.
Let's get some input from other Swimming Wikiproject contributors, especially from non-American WP contributors, because the vast majority of the 3,330 WP swimming articles include the flag icons and the vast majority also concern swimmers who are not Americans. I'm happy to abide by the majority/consensus, but I'm not interested in touching off an on-going reformatting conflict if a new consensus does not exist. Most of all, I want the 50+ Florida Gators swimmers articles to be formatted to the same standards and to exhibit similarly high-quality content (see "Mary Wayte" for a good example of good, minimum standard content). Most of the individual swimmer bios are a mess, full of non-relevant trivia, promotional links, and fancruft, and the vast majority need to be brought up to a common minimum standard of content. Bottom line: I would rather spend my time improving article content than debating formatting. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
I am aware of the broad definition of the word American. Every edit I made to replace the flag icon with the word American is properly linked to the United States. Going so in-depth about that wasn't necessary. But I get your point. I'm not really concerned with the "noun-vs.-adjective terminology issue." What I am concerned with is the redundancy. Like I said before, The flag icon, in most swimming articles, is already in the swimmer's infobox (located right above the medals). There is no need to put the flag icon on there twice (like you tried to do with Ryan Lochte). That could come off as nationalistic, which isn't what Wikipedia is about.Philipmj24 (talk) 23:59, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry about the mis-communication; I apparently misunderstood what you were trying to convey regarding "nationality" is American, not United States. This is what I meant by "adjective" (American) vs. "noun" (United States) forms. Regarding the redundancy issue, on my primary web browser (Firefox 3.5.1) the swimmer medals (and second flag icon) only display when the "show" button is toggled. This also appears to be the case for my backup version of MS Internet Explorer. Query: if the WP Swimming contributors feel that two flag icons is too many (or too nationalistic), do we want the single remaining flag icon to display in the static infobox or only when the medal box display is toggled?
I can't speak for all 3,000+ WP Swimming articles because I haven't looked at all of them, but the 45+ Florida Gators swimmer bios (those that had infobxes, and not just a medal box) all had a national flag icon in the infobox before I ever edited them. This appears to be the case for the vast majority of other swimmer bios as well. In fact the Ryan Lochte article had a flag icon in the infobox, too, before it was deleted on October 8th (see diff [2]); on October 14th, I merely restored the flag icon to the Lochte infobox that was deleted on October 8th in order to maintain formatting consistency with all other swimmer bios. I neither created this standard nor inserted the flag icons in any of these articles; I was merely working with the existing formatting that existed before I touched any of these articles. After I discovered the flag icon deletions from other current swimmer bios by the IP user, I raised the issue here for discussion and determination of consensus. Having recounted this history at some length, it remains to be determined if there is a new project consensus to remove the flag icons from the swimmer article infoboxes. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 02:12, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I disagree on the redundancy in their use, and believe a swimmer's/athlete's nationality for competition should be noted with a flag:

    • These athletes are representing their country of swimming nationality: at the time of their meet/swim/awards, they are in some respects the country's representative: they are taking a spot allocated to the country, and the affiliation is listed there (sometimes above their actual names, such as relays). The flag is important to include as it implies weight that is present in the representation.
    • An athlete's representation can be different from their home country, their birth country, their country of residency, and/or their actual nationality. It can also change during their career (e.g. Mike Alexandrov, Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, Ben Hockin).
    • The flag can also be more correct than just a nationality (and I'm thinking all those likes from "Great Britain" that go the the United Kingdom page, despite the fact that for swimming (at least) Northern Ireland is a part of the Irish federation).
    • It can also be important to have the visual distinction for cases where the representation differs within a group/team, say in something like a college relay that sets a SCM US Open Record which ends up being the fastest time ever and is not recognized as the World Record because of the different nationalities present on the record.
    • I also believe it important to have both the flag and the country name present in the info box because there are instances where just the flag is listed or the flag and the 3-letter abbreviation. Having the flag and country listed helps connect the two and can be the point where person who has not memorized all the country codes of the IOC, FINA, FIFA or other, now understands who they person is competing for.

I believe the flag should be present in the info box. And the Gators should still have their nationality marked: their swimming team (at least currently) has a high international count. Unless, of course, UF is trying to disguise this.... Hooperswim (talk) 12:17, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Maybe we should focus more on WP:MOSFLAG. It states, "flags are discouraged in sportspeople's individual infoboxes." It also goes on to say, "Flags should never indicate the player's nationality in a non-sporting sense." Which is what some are suggesting. If we are going to keep the flag there, "Nationality" should be changed to "Represented country". Or something in that effect. Which would be redundant because that exact phrase is also stated above the medal table. Hooperswim, you "believe a swimmer's/athlete's nationality for competition should be noted with a flag." It is. Most swimming articles have the flag right above the medal table.Philipmj24 (talk) 19:26, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

    Succession boxes

I am noticing that a lot of swimmers have succession boxes in chronological order instead of being grouped and merged by event. Athletes from many other sports have their succession boxes merged by event. See Barry Bonds and Wayne Gretzky. It makes it much easier for the reader when succession boxes are merged. I supervised the Jessica Hardy review and asked that hers be merged. After seeing Ryan Lochte pass GA with chronological succession boxes, I bounced around and looked at Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe only to see them also chronological. Has swimming decided to go against the grain of other sports?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 06:10, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I see what you mean. That can be done, no problem. When I was doing the Jessica Hardy article and you told me to merge the boxes, that was the first time I've heard of that. I've forgot about it since then. Most swimming bios succession boxes articles are in chronological order like you said. But I can start merging them. I don't want the swimming articles to go against everything else. It is important that we don't have articles that are doing different formats. Philipmj24 (talk) 13:08, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I do think it makes sense to put the succession boxes in event order rather than chronological order (and this is something I'll keep in mind for future GAN reviews), but I think the boxes still need some work on Ryan Lochte (I haven't looked at the other articles yet). Should the articles be sorted by the distance, short/long course, or stroke type, and in what order? Right now it still seems all over the place. Perhaps this should be a WikiProject-level style recommendation as to the order. Grondemar 13:11, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

    Inactive WikiProject?

I see that no-one has responded to a post on this page since January 2012, that's considerably more than a year. And I can see complaints here about lack of response that date from the middle of 2011 and talk of it being inactive in 2009. If this WikiProject is inactive, it'd help users if it's marked as such. --Dweller (talk) 11:18, 11 March 2013 (UTC)

I have marked the WikiProject as inactive. --Dweller (talk) 09:26, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
Dweller, I can assure you that there a half dozen or more active WikiProject participants. For better or worse, most swimming-related discussion takes place on user and article talk pages, not here. This project talk page remains a central clearing house for notices. I have removed your "inactive template" from the top of the page. Regards, Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 10:06, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Wiki - Swimming - National Records

I noticed recently (last month) that on Wikipedia, someone (do not know who and would like to know) has started publishing (or updating) swimming national records (for maybe 50 countries).

This is right up my alley as I have kept track of such records for years. (Literally: I started in 1963).

(In some cases the records shown are not the very latest - or more exactly are ignoring records set many years earlier).

The precise point of this entry is as follows: There are about 6 countries whuch are mentioned in the overall index, yet pages are unreachable:

    Vietnam Thailand

    Monaco Montenegro Armenia Azerbaidjan

    Would appreciate:

1- that these pointers get fixed (if the page does actually exist) 2- would hope to see more countries get listed 3- eventually might get in touch with someone in order to:

      a- issue some corrections
b - add some records or countries.

I have not yet created a Wiki id for me.

Bikini, one of the oldest articles of this project has gone into a peer review here. It was created on Novemeber 1, 2001, One day after Japan. That was before Abraham Lincoln (Nov 4), France (Nov 4) and California (Nov 17) were created on Wikipedia. (courtesy: TonyTheTiger) It also is a highly viewed article. If you search for Bikini using google the first return is this article. Page visitation reached its highest in 2011, and the highest number of visitors come from India, Mexico and Spain.

A lot of work has gone into the article. It kept expanding and eventually three new spin-off articles were created - History of the bikini (a good article), Bikini in popular culture and Bikini variants. The popular culture article split its own spin-offs into Category:Individual bikinis. The variants article in turn split into specific articles for Monokini and Tankini. Work has gone into other related article as well, like Thong (clothing) and Bikini waxing.

The review is not a success because of low participation. Can you participate, please? Aditya(talkcontribs) 21:10, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Is there any way that we could show a divers competitive history any differently, maybe grouping by competitions, i.e. Olympics, Worlds, Continental, National. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Matthew Pierce

I'm unable to find anything in WP:NSPORT dealing with swimming. The absence of such criteria create a vacuum that is currently on display at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Matthew Pierce, a deletion request directed at a swimmer who won an individual NCAA championship and a gold medal at the World University Games. Am I missing something? Has this project attempted to establish criteria for presumed notability? Cbl62 (talk) 18:58, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

    • Cbl, there is no swimming specific guideline. The three notability guidelines that usually apply to swimmers are NCOLLATH, NOLYMPICS and GNG. NSPORTS also includes the following general language in its basic criteria: "participated in a major international amateur or professional competition at the highest level (such as the Olympics)." That covers FINA world championship participants, and arguably participants in the Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, and Pan-Pacific swimming championships. Hope this helps. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Burl Reid - is he notable?

Is Burl Reid notable? Doesn't seem very notable, but I'm not well up on swimming notability. --Dweller (talk) 15:29, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

Dweller, Burl Reid appears to be marginally notable, having won World University Games medals twice, and having participated in the finals of the world short-course championships in 2000. That having been said, however, there is no specific notability guideline for competition swimmers, and unless they are Olympic athletes (see WP:NOLYMPICS), swimmers must satisfy the general requirements of WP:Notability (sports) or the general notability guidelines per WP:GNG. Both of the latter would require an analysis of whether the subject has received non-trivial, non-routine coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources. The quickest way to get informed input is to nominate the article at AfD and let folks who are familiar with the applicable notability guidelines review the subject. You should, of course, perform your own due diligence per WP:BEFORE prior to listing the article at AfD. Hope this helps. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 10:6, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
In the case of older, marginally notable athletes, check for Masters swimming involvement and World Masters records. Some swimmers are more notable for their Masters achievements then for their elite career. David Radcliff is one obvious example (though he meets WP:NOLYMPICS, as he swam the 1500m free in 1956). Sportygeek (talk) 01:40, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello, swimming enthusiasts. Here's an old AfC draft for your inspection. Is this a notable swimmer? Should this page be kept and improved instead of being deleted as a stale draft? —Anne Delong (talk) 22:46, 17 November 2014 (UTC)

    • @Anne Delong: My apologies for not responding sooner. There is no specific notability guideline for competition swimmers. There are, however, several different alternatives for assessing the notability of swimmers. Of course, they may satisfy the general notability guidelines with significant coverage in multiple, independent, reliable sources per WP:GNG. Olympic athletes are presumed to be notable per WP:NOLYMPICS. Also, the basic criteria of WP:NSPORTS suggest that "that sports figures are likely to meet Wikipedia's basic standards of inclusion if they have, for example, participated in a major international amateur or professional competition at the highest level (such as the Olympics)," and swimming medalists at the FINA World Championships have generally been accepted as notable under this clause. For medalists at the Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan Pacific Championships, etc., it appears there has been more of an examination of their body of work. Lee did participate in the 2014 Pan Pacs, but did not medal (finishing 9th in the 100-meter butterfly, which means she did not advance to the 8-swimmer event final). For college swimmers, you may also want to see if they qualify under WP:NCOLLATH, the operative clause there being whether the subject has received a major national award, e.g., the Honda Sports Award for swimming and diving (which Felicia Lee did win in 2014 -- please note that every other Honda Award winner for swimming does have an article, but all of the others were either Olympians or had won medals in major international competitions). Lee was also a two-time silver medalist at the World University Games, but the university games are generally not treated as a top-tier competition. Bottom line: the best argument for Lee's notability appears to be the Honda Award under NCOLLATH. Hope this helps. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:43, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Okay, thanks, Dirtlawyer1. I have added a reference to that award to the article. —Anne Delong (talk) 16:05, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
@Anne Delong: Is this article still hung up in AfC? If it has been moved to article space, I can't find it. If it hasn't and you want to move it to article space, I would be willing to defend the subject's notability at AfD on the basis of the Honda Award, her NCAA titles, and her university games silver medals. It's a well written article, but I would suggest you also explore resources such as the Stanford swimming media guide and athletics website -- her college text is a little light on references. The Tracy Caulkins and Nicole Haislett articles provide good examples of sourced college swimming content -- and both were Honda Award winners (note the linked footnotes). Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 16:16, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Hello again, Dirtlawyer1. Thanks for your helpful advice. If you think it's ready to be moved, I will do it now. If not, however, I will have to leave it for someone with more (okay, any) sports expertise to improve. There are about 3,000 other G13 eligible submissions to be looked at this month, and I have this list of other pages to work on; I just don't have time to become an expert on swimming.—Anne Delong (talk) 17:01, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Understood, Anne. I appreciate what you've done to get it this far as someone who is not a regular editor of sports and swimming articles. If you move it into article space, I'll make the edits I suggested above. Thanks for your work in this area. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 17:05, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
@Anne Delong: Please give me a coordinated head's up before you move the article -- I see that it's been previously deleted as a G4 recreation of an article deleted at AfD. I will want to make several quick edits that will support the subject's notability, and I would prefer to avoid the drama of some diligent admin performing another G4 deletion before I get to make the necessary changes. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 17:36, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, it appears there was a deletion discussion five years ago, when she was about 17. I will await your ping before moving it. —Anne Delong (talk) 21:24, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Swimming/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. New swimming records recognized?

Has FINA recognized new relay records for 4x50-meter events? An editor with whom I am not familiar has added these distances to the swimming records navbox: [3]. Does anyone know anything about this? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 15:02, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

It's been almost a year now, and FINA has added several new WRs to their official list; the 4x100 m mixed freestyle and medley relays (long course only), and six 4x50 m relays (short course only), see FINA World Records. The 4x100 mixed freestyle and medley in short course are apparently not recognized by FINA (they are not part of the short course world championships either), although they are included in the introduction of List of world records in swimming. I'll adjust that. Gap9551 (talk) 20:35, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

High-priority new article project for Commonwealth Games medallists

Hey, y'all. We already have a nearly complete list of List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (men), but we really need to add List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (women) as a new article. The Commonwealth Games are one of the five most important regularly-held international swimming events, together with the Olympics, FINA world championships, Pan Pacific Championship, and Pan American Games; participation includes competitive swimmers from Australia, Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa and the rest of the Commonwealth countries (former member nations of the British Empire).

Is someone willing to take this on as a personal project through completion? The Commonwealth Games men's medallists article can be used as a template, and there are several Commonwealth Games references linked on the main WP:SWIMMING page in the "Helpful online references" section for lists of medallists by individual events. This would be a good project for anyone with a couple days of time to work on it, and the motivation to see it through. I will be available to answer questions, provide help finding references, and provide general support. How about it, swimming fans? Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:41, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

Hi there! The men's CG list is not yet complete though, if that's what you meant. And I'd say the European Aquatics Championships and the Asian Games are at roughly on the same level of importance as the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacifics, with the Pan American Games a level below those four (the US typically sends a B-team these days if I'm not mistaken). The Olympics and World Aquatics Championships are at higher levels than all regional competitions. I suggest that after the Commonwealth Games articles are finished, we also start list articles for the Pan Pacs and Asian Games, in that order. A list for Pan Ams already exists so we don't need to assess its relative importance. Lists for the European Championships also exist (I made those back in 2011.) As for your question, I'm not in a position to create a whole article in a short amount of time but can contribute over longer timescales. Gap9551 (talk) 21:28, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
Talking about Pan Ams, shall we split Swimming at the Pan American Games into a men's and women's article, named List of Pan American Games medalists in swimming (men) and List of Pan American Games medalists in swimming (women), following the naming and structure conventions of the other list articles in Category:Lists of swimming medalists? Gap9551 (talk) 21:31, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
Finally, there is no list yet for the discontinued FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships, a relatively small number of medalists. Maybe we should include them in List of World Aquatics Championships medalists in open water swimming, despite the "World Aquatics Championships" in its title. Gap9551 (talk) 21:34, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
@Gap9551: From 1951 until at least the 1980s, the Pan American Games were the second-most important international championships for Americans, Canadians, Brazilians and any other New World country that was serious about competitive swimming. From the 1950s through the 1980s, the Americans and Canadians sent their best available swimmers to the Pan Am Games, new world records were not uncommon, and most of the Pan Am swimmers turned up on national Olympic teams in later years. With the advent of the FINA world championships, the importance of the Pan Am Games to swimming has gradually declined, especially with the FINA championships now being held every year, alternating between 25- and 50-meter competitions, since 2001. In comparison, the Commonwealth Games seem to get more attention from their participating national swim teams these days, not least because second-tier swimming powers (really, everyone other than Australia) get to perform on a larger stage and win medals with greater frequency than they do at the Olympics or FINA championships. Within the former Empire, the games also have an important political purpose of reinforcing the political, economic and cultural bonds of the Commonwealth countries. Given the presence of the Americans, Australians, Canadians, Chinese and Japanese, you can make an argument that the level of competition is at least as good at the Pan Pacific Championships, but again, they've been overshadowed by the now-annual FINA contests.
Back to the point, yes, the 2006, 2010 and 2014 medallists (note my use of Commonwealth spelling here!) still need to be added for several events to the men's list of Commonwealth Games swimming medallists. Given that article provides a ready-made template for a companion women's list, I would suggest that the next new article project is List of Commonwealth Games medallists in swimming (women). If we split the Pan Am Games list into men and women, I would like to use a common format for the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Pan Am Games. In the mean time, the Pan Am Games have four fewer iterations than the British Empire/Commonwealth Games, and it's a somewhat more manageably sized combined men's-women's list for now.
Not sure what to do with FINA World Open Water Swimming Championships; I'll need to study the existing FINA framework more. The importance of the Asian Games is relatively recent, what with the Chinese becoming fully engaged participants over the last 30 or so years. The history of the Asian Games was kind of a low-rent affair for much of their early existence, with various financial crises and changed locations, etc.; their importance to world swimming for most of their existence, however, was fairly minimal. Obviously, that's changed.
Bottom line, let's see if we can finish out the Commonwealth Games men's list over the next couple weeks. Then we can can copy it, remove the men's names, and use the shell for the quick creation of the new women's list in a fill-in-the-blanks exercise. If anything, the women's list should be somewhat shorter because the women's longer distances were restricted in the earlier years. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:14, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
@Dirtlawyer1: Thanks for the swimming history lesson. I figured the Pan Ams used to be more important in the past than they are today, but didn't know to what extent. Pan Pacs possibly have a stronger field than CG today (it would be interesting to do a quantitative analysis of winning times, or times required to make the final, for all competitions throughout their histories to compare their respective levels and the relative changes therein) but it has far less history, and as you point out, less attention/importance outside the swimming community.
I certainly agree the CG women's list should be done next. After that probably the Pan Pacs. If we keep a combined Pan Ams list for men and women, maybe we should still change the title to List of Pan American Games medalists in swimming, so it's easier to recognize from the title what its purpose is? Also, the Pan Pacs have had 5 fewer editions than the Pan Pams, so that suggests that a single list would be appropriate. Gap9551 (talk) 16:02, 17 September 2015 (UTC)
@Gap9551: I agree on all points in your post immediately above. In fact, I see no reason for you not to move the Pam Am Games list to the name you suggest above -- which is consistent with other swimming medalists lists, as well as the standard Wikipedia naming practices for lists. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:46, 18 September 2015 (UTC)
@Dirtlawyer1: Ok I moved the page. I noticed though that Template:International swimming (and many other articles) links to Swimming at the Pan American Games in a similar way as it links to e.g. Swimming at the Summer Olympics. That is, it is not aiming to link to just the list of medalists but rather to general information about swimming at the Pan Ams. Therefore I made Swimming at the Pan American Games into a new article containing its all-time swimming medal table by country and the link to championships records, rather than just a redirect to the medalists article. Later we should add the swimming event program too. Gap9551 (talk) 23:32, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

    Categorization of swimmers

Hi all, it appears that many swimmers in Category:Olympic swimmers of Australia are not in Category:Australian female swimmers or Category:Australian male swimmers (whichever applies of the latter two). Especially men almost never seem to be in both applicable categories. But many women are. Since neither category is a parent of the other, normally we should put swimmers in each applicable category. This is what seems to have been done for e.g. American and Dutch swimmers. Chinese swimmers are somewhere in between (Category:Olympic swimmers of China has 158 pages, whereas Category:Chinese female swimmers and Category:Chinese male swimmers combine for 78 pages). My question is, do we have a guideline to keep Olympic swimmers out of the male/female categories (that someone followed for the Australian male swimmers), or is this simply an inconsistency that has to be fixed? Thanks, Gap9551 (talk) 23:22, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Gap, I think the subject swimmers are supposed to be in both categories, as applicable. "Olympic swimmers of Australia" and "Australian female swimmers" are overlapping, and certainly not exclusive, nor identical. IMHO, our present category organization for Olympic athletes is less than ideal, with numerous overlapping cats, but I have not seen a better solution yet. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:29, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

    Liam Tancock

Would one of you kind people mind giving Liam Tancock a quick look over. I've noticed some discrepancies in the number of Commonwealth medals he's won and the number the article says he's won and I am trying to fix it, but I don't know enough about the World Championships to double-check that info and the part of the medal table for those events. Thanks. Red Fiona (talk) 03:11, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

@Redfiona99: Hey, Red. I checked all 10 CG medals listed in the infobox medals; all are legitimate according to our Wikipedia articles for the individual CG swimming events. Please note that he won a bronze medal at the 2010 CGs for a third-place tie in the 100-metre backstroke, and a gold in the medley relay for swimming in the preliminary heats for the winning English team; those might cause some confusion. If you're trying to improve the sourcing for the article, there are several Commonwealth Games references listed on the WP:SWIMMING main page. If you need more, I can help you find them. Please let me know. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 04:48, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
@Dirtlawyer1: I think it was the 4 x events that had caused the previous problem as the version before my edits had listed his 2014 bronzes but not the gold. I was worried something similar might have happened with the World Championship events.Red Fiona (talk) 05:30, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, sometimes the medals for swimmers in the preliminary heats of the relays causes some confusion, and also presents some problem for sourcing. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 05:34, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Meet locations in section headers (biographic articles)

I have a little disagreement with another editor in the article Park Tae-hwan. They want to add the cities and countries where meets took place to the header of each meet section (see e.g. this edit). I don't think that looks good as the headers become too long and location is not of primary importance. I suggested to add those locations to the paragraph text instead. To avoid an edit war and because it may concern other bio's too, I bring the issue up here to ask for your opinion. Note that well-developed swimming bio articles such as Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe do not have locations in section headers, and Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Body sections, subsection 'Names and orders for section headings' says The usual practice is to name and order sections based on the precedent of some article which seems similar. Gap9551 (talk) 19:11, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

    • Good question, Gap. Here's my take: if we are including the year and name of a championship event in the article subheaders, it is unnecessary and undesirable to include the event's geographic location (city, country, etc.). Article section headers should not be any longer than necessary to provide logical, reasonably self-explanatory section captions. As a general rule, shorter subheaders are usually better.
Moreover, I would suggest that a similar rule should also apply to linking championship event locations in article text; per WP:OVERLINK, it is not necessary to link both the event and the city/country that hosted the event, e.g., 2012 Summer Olympics in London, NOT 2012 Summer Olympics in London. A big part of the art of wiki-linking is to emphasize the most important links that are most closely related to the article subject, not to link to every possible article found in the text. When we link to everything, the most important links are often lost in the stew. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 19:31, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I'm South Korean and currently editing Taehwan Park category. I think by putting location in the title, it makes viewers more clear where the tournament was held and easier to see Taehwan Park's accomplishment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fanatic32 (talkcontribs) 20:02, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

@Fanatic32: "Brevity is the soul of wit." William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act 2, scene 2. More is not always better. Your readers will understand Taehwan Park's accomplishments perfectly well with or without the event locations in the subheaders. Cheers. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 20:34, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

What I did was putting accurate information, so that viewers can easily see where the tournament was held without looking at the description. However, if one of you guys wish to edit this, please feel free to do so. There are some tournaments that don't contain description, so you might need to put the information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fanatic32 (talkcontribs) 21:41, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Your information is absolutely accurate, but not in the optimal place. If the location is not mentioned, it is because the section has not been well developed. Some sections only have a medal table. When someone decides to write these sections (maybe you'd like to do that?), details about the tournament can be added, including locations. You can look at the articles of other famous swimmers for examples, such as the two I listed above. Gap9551 (talk) 22:00, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

    Country codes

Do we have a policy for which 3-letter country code to use? Several countries have two different codes. For example, the IOC uses NED for the Netherlands, but the ISO code is NLD. See Comparison of IOC, FIFA, and ISO 3166 country codes. These codes also differ for Germany, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Chile, Portugal, Costa Rica, Denmark, and more. Templates such as {{flagathlete|[[Name]]|NLD}} take either (except BRN). In articles related to the Olympics it seems obvious to use IOC codes. But what about lists such as List of World Aquatics Championships medalists in swimming (women) or 2015 European Short Course Swimming Championships? I have the impression that they tend to use the IOC codes, but do we have a guideline? Gap9551 (talk) 22:39, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

I'm a bit confused about the scope of this article. It appears to be about pools that are actually used in the Olympics (such as 25 meter width). I had always assumed, maybe incorrectly, that the article was about 50-meter pools in general. I assumed that because Long course redirects to this article, and has done so ever since its creation almost 9 years ago. If the Olympic-size swimming pool article is really just about Olympic pools, and since many 50-meter pools are narrower (e.g. 25 yard), we may need a separate long course article, just like we have a Short course article. We can also add a subsection about non-Olympic 50-meter pools in the Olympic-size swimming pool article. Gap9551 (talk) 15:23, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

    Diving

Hi, sorry to bother you because I know this is the Swimming project not the diving project but with the world championships being combined you are my best hope. Do you think it would be possible/appropriate to use the swimmer infobox as a template for a diver? Red Fiona (talk) 22:40, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

Hi Redfiona99, you have come to the right place, this wikiproject is also for diving (and synchronized swimming and water polo). I think that Template:Infobox swimmer is intended specifically for swimmers though, as the description says so. I checked several recent Olympic gold medalist divers, and they all use Template:Infobox sportsperson. Gap9551 (talk) 23:03, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll use that then :) Red Fiona (talk) 23:12, 20 January 2016 (UTC)

    Error in Records for Quatar

1- The Quatari Records for Women SC seem to contain 4 records by 2 swimmers who seem to be male.

Rather masculine-sounding first names, plus they are shown up as male record holders.
      Noah Al-Khulaifi and Walid Dalloul.

I would suppose these 4 records should be erased from the women side.

2- General notice to nearly all national records.

I seem to be aware of many records not shown in many Natl Records pages.
Mostly records set in the 2000-2015 period (some older)m not shown as valid Natl Records.

    Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:25, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

List of fatal shark attacks in California

I am wondering if someone from this WikiProject would mind taking a look at List of fatal shark attacks in California and assessing it. There seems to be a lot of detail provided about some of these attacks which might be taking things a bit too far, but I am not sure if that is common for these types of articles. List of Commonwealth records in swimming and nationality of British swimmers

A minor dispute has erupted between me User:Montell 74 on the correct nationality to list for those athletes from the Home Nations, specifically in those events where the record was set representing Great Britain i.e. not at the Commonwealth Games. These are distinct from the records set at the Commonwealth Games, where it would be perfectly appropriate to list swimmers by the team they specifically represented. However I'd argue that to list Adam Peaty, as an example, as English when he was specifically representing the United Kingdom in an Olympics in which the country competes as a whole rather than its constituent parts is erroneous. Also, several of the swimmers he insists as listing as English aren't English anyway. I'm not a member of the project or particularly an expert on swimming-related articles, so would anybody mind weighing in on the matter. I don't know if there's a policy consensus to actually list Home Nations swimmers as such, in which case fair enough, but the majority of swimming articles I've browsed tend to list GB swimmers by their legal nationality, apart from in a Commonwealth Games context. - Chrism would like to hear from you 11:22, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

    Greetings WikiProject Swimming/Archive 1 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

16,000 BLPs moving out of mainspace

Hi. Some of you will be aware of an ongoing issue of BLP articles created by Sander.v.Ginkel. The background at ANI can be found here. The discussion on the cleanup can be found here. In short, 16,000 BLP articles are being moved out of the mainspace to draftspace. This has already started following a Bot Approval. This should be complete in the next 48hrs or so. Articles will remain in draft for 90 days. In that time, they can be checked, and if OK, moved back to the mainspace. Anything not checked after 90 days will be deleted automatically.

So how can you help? The BLPs are broken down by occupational area. If an one of these interests you, please help. Even if it is checking one article. Check the article that has been moved to draft that a) it meets the notability requirement of the occupational area in question and b) that the facts in the article are supported by the sources. This includes, but is not limited to, the dates of birth, who they represented, when they were active, etc. If there are elements that can not be supported by the sources, they must be removed. If you are happy with the article, then move it back into the mainspace. DO NOT move anything until you have checked the sources, or supplied other reliable sources to support information in the article that may not already be cited. More information can be found here.

This is not going to be an easy task. I don't think there's too much support to check 16,000+ articles and I suspect that most of them will be gone after 90 days. If you have any questions, please raise them here. Thanks. Lugnuts Precious bodily fluids 11:48, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Notice about adminship to participants at this project

Many participants here create a lot of content, may have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.

So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

    Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

    Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   11:02, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

    Categories for female swimmers

I wanted to know if anybody is working on categorising female swimmers i.e. female backstroke swimmers, female breaststroke swimmers, female freestyle swimmers and female medley swimmers, into individual country categories e.g. Australian backstroke swimmers because I've noticed that there are only two categories which are American and Canadian. If there is someone who is doing this then I am more than happy to help and vice versa as there are a lot of swimmers under those categories.

Also, I was thinking of categorising the Paralympic swimmers too e.g. Paralympic backstroke swimmers, Paralympic breaststroke swimmers, Paralympic freestyle swimmers and Paralympic medley swimmers. I don't want to go into too much detail for classifying them into their sport categories as it could be quite complicating especially if the swimmer competes in two different classes or has changed sport classes.

Proposed changes to NSPORTS at Village Pump

Your input, one way or the other, on several pending proposals to alter NSPORTS would be welcomed. These proposals are as follows:

    • Subproposal 1: Requires "all athlete biographies must demonstrate GNG when notability is challenged at AfD" and that "SIGCOV in multiple secondary, independent reliable sources would have to be produced during the course of an AfD". Also potential limitations/exceptions.
    • Subproposal 3: "Remove all simple or mere 'participation' criteria in NSPORT, outside of ones related to Olympics and equivalent events."
    • Subproposal 4: "Modify all provisions of NSPORTS that provide that participation in 'one' game/match such that the minimum participation level is increased to 'three' games/matches. This raises the threshold for the presumption of notability to kick in."
    • Subproposal 5: "Implement a requirement that all sports biographies and sports season/team articles must, from inception, include at least one example of actual WP:SIGCOV from a reliable, independent source. Mere database entries would be insufficient for creation of a new biography article."
    • Subproposal 6: "Conditional on Subproposal 6 passing, should a prod-variant be created, applicable to the articles covered by Subproposal 5, that would require the addition of one reference containing significant coverage to challenge the notice."
    • Subproposal 8: "Rewrite the introduction to clearly state that GNG is the applicable guideline, and articles may not be created or kept unless they meet GNG." Further: "Replace all instances of 'presumed to be notable' with 'significant coverage is likely to exist.'
    • Subproposal 9: Strike, as allegedly confusing and/or at odds with other parts of NSPORTS, the following sentence from the lead: "The article should provide reliable sources showing that the subject meets the general notability guideline or the sport specific criteria set forth below."
    • Subproposal 10: "Require each project that has inclusion criteria based on participation in a league ... within the next 30 days to justify the inclusion of each league. Such justification must include actual 'random' (truly random) sampling showing that 90%-plus of the players in each league receive sufficient SIGCOV to pass GNG. At the end of 30 days, any league as to which the data has not been provided must be stricken from NSPORTS." Cbl62 (talk) 09:43, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

    • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

    Record help

I am trying to determine when Emma Reaney's ACC record 200y IM time (1:54.92) was beaten. I was hoping someone had a subscription to the MeetMobile app or some other way to check some times for me. Reaney set the ACC record in the 2014 ACC championship. By December 2, 2016 UVA's Kaitlyn Jones had posted a 1:54.05. I am wondering when and by whom Reaney's record was broken. I would like to see (2015 & 2016) ACC Championship meet results which would show the ACC record at the time of the meet. I know her ACC Championships record stood until 2017 when Alexia Zevnik broke it, but the conference record fell earier.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:16, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

    Semifinals (swimming)

Hi! Don't you think we should have 1 wikitable for semis just like for heats. a random article. The sources used also have only 1 table, which makes it more clear who advanced with time. It would probably also avoid such mistakes as currently in Singapore article:

    Athlete Event Heat Semifinal Final
Time Rank Time Rank Time Rank
    Teong Tzen Wei 50 metre butterfly 23.51 14 Q 23.03 4 Q 23.29 8

    While it should be

    Athlete Event Heat Semifinal Final
Time Rank Time Rank Time Rank
    Teong Tzen Wei 50 metre butterfly 23.51 14 Q 23.03 7 Q 23.29 8

@Pelmeen10: Hmm, never thought about that but not a bad idea. Just went on with how it was done the last few editions. Kante4 (talk) 14:40, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

    Medals in the infobox

After seeing Olivia Smoliga's infobox with NCAA championships, I added that content to Emma Reaney's infobox. I have also been working on Kelly Hecking's article. I am wondering if I could put YMCA Nationals (SC & LC) in the medals in the infobox. Hecking has 3 career 1sts (LC), 4 2nds (SC) and 2 3rds (SC). I posted at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Sports#Medals_sections_of_infoboxes, but no response.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:24, 20 June 2022 (UTC)

    I got no response here. I did get a response at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Infoboxes#Medals_element_in_infoboxes, so if you have further comments, comment there.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:01, 26 June 2022 (UTC)

American Public High School 100 meter (sc) backstroke record owned by New Jersey?

While fleshing out the modestly/marginally notable Kelly Hecking, I decided I might as well create an article for slightly less notable Tashy Bohm, who by my estimation is a bit of a rival for her. In so doing, I came across a set of sourced facts which point me to an oddity. It seems like for the last 40 plus years New Jersey high schoolers have passed around the American Public High School 100 meter short course backstroke record. I don't usually follow swimming much outside of the Olympics. As I understand the sport there are basically four records for every length. There is short course/long course and meters/yards for every event. Short course is 25 meters or yards and long course is 50. Sources have presented facts that the 1980 American Public High School 100 meter (sc) backstroke record was held from 1980 to 1997 by New Jersian Lisa Iori, This was broken in 1997 by New Jersian Jennelle Ritchie at the beginning of 1997. Then New Jersian Hecking broke it unofficially before New Jersian Bohm broke it officially in February 1997. THen New Jersian Lauren English broke it again in 2004. My perception is that of the four combinations (LCm, LCy, SCm and SCy), it must be rare for puclic high schoolers to have official meets in SCm forums. New Jersey must be one of the few states that contests SCm. Otherwise, I need an explanation of why NJ owns this record. Proposal related to featuring this sport at Wikipedia:In the news

You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia talk:In the news § Remove ITN/R: Sports cleanup.
Currently one or more of this sport's events are listed at Wikipedia:In the news/Recurring items, meaning that they have been judged significant enough that, if nominated, they will always be posted to the In the news section of the main page (subject to article quality being sufficient). However a proposal has been made to remove some that not been nominated recently from that list. If the proposal is successful, the event(s) may still be nominated but the nomination will debate the significance of the event as well as article quality.
The event(s) relevant to this sport are: FINA World Aquatics Championships.

    Weights of swimmers in infobox

I am proposing that weight be eliminated for swimmers in their infobox. More and more swimmers, primarily women, are speaking about their battles with weight issues and mental health. As a result, many national organizations such as USA Swimming and Swimming Canada no long post weights for swimmers on their profiles. This extends to the United States and Canadian Olympic committees which also no longer post weights. Given that weights are really not that significant in swimming compared to combat sports like boxing or tae kwon do, I think it is time to remove these weight categories. We no longer have reliable weight information from the primary sources and a persons weight can fluctuate a lot. If a swimmer sees their weight on Wikipedia posted from a time that is no longer achievable for them, this can cause considerable mental anguish.

Since we no longer have great sources and the potential to cause mental health issues and eating disorders, it is probably time to remove these from profiles, particularly female swimmers. What do others think? Words in the Wind(talk) 15:29, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

It seems that US and Canadian swimmers weights are becoming unsourced and can be removed. But there are over 200 countries in the world. Most sportsperson's infoboxes have the weight paramater, but it's never mandatory (all info in Wikipedia should be properly sourced anyway). No reason to remove the parameter from infobox, if it's public - we can publish it. This goes for all sports. Wikipedia is not censored. Pelmeen10 (talk) 00:14, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

    Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
