British-Pathé news clips archive

Is there a place to list good resources and archives for video clips? The specific example I have in mind is the British-Pathé news clips archive. Website is here. Is there a Wikipedia namespace page where such resources are listed? I see one for images and documents, but not one for historical archives of video footage. Even a listing of the non-free ones (most are not freely-licensed) would help some articles where linking to a news clip (historical or current) would be useful. Decide where to note a source

I have a very good book on invertebrate zoology - as well as the details of the critters, this book describes the principles, e.g. the construction and consequences of bilaterian body forms. In which part of the "library" should this be located. --Philcha (talk) 16:24, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Encyclopedia of Performing Arts

Just wrote an article on an Italian language encyclopedia, Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo, that apparently has 145,000 entries on the subject of performing arts, including genres, bibliographies, etc. It has a separately published index which I presume would be valuable for us to access. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:24, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

yes, this works in the US. It is a useful free trial for 14 days of 150 of the deGruyter journals, a general academic publisher known particular for its very strong list of journals in the humanities, especially the classics, history, philosophy, literature, linguistics, and religion (and I note that even the German language journal titles usually contain many articles in English in the more recent years, and even the German language articles have short English abstracts.). Confusing Overlap(?) between this & WP:Reference Desk

Hi! Until moments ago I was unfamiliar with either the WP:LIBRARY(WikiProject Resource Exchange Shared Resources) or the set of reference desks available at WP:Reference desk. After years of editing here, I suppose it's about time I familiarized myself with both. =D Soooo...I discovered the Reference desk (and its children) via a link to it here @ WP:LIBRARY. I do not find a link over there (maybe I haven't looked enough) back to WP:LIBRARY though, and I am a little confused as to what is the difference in purpose between the two. It seems as though you are both up to the same thing, but could someone explain this fork to me clearly? I was thinking of adding several resource materials that I own and would be willing to share, to the list here at WP:SHARED, but before I do, I would like a clearer understanding of what the distinction is between those Reference Desks & this Shared Resource Library WikiProject. Do they collaborate? Are they duplicitous? If I had a question on a given topic or needed access to a particular source, would one of those Reference desks, or this Library, be the more appropriate place to ask it, and if so, why? If this is already clearly explained somewhere else that I can study, so as not to waste your time re-explaining it, that would be great. My own detailed reply is over at WT:RD. I found this a few years ago when I had this great idea for sharing subscriptions and proposed it - then someone pointed out this project. VIAF inter project linking

Dear friends; I started to contribute to Wikipedia in autumn 2004. I looked at pages about places I lived. One was Timişoara where I found a note "1154 - The arab geographer Sarif al Idrisi, in his work "The book of pleasures", is describing precisely the road from Cavorz (ie Karlowitz/Sremski Karlovci) to Timisoara, passing trough Cnez (ie Satchinez/Knez); he declare that Timisoara is "a pleasant city ... offering big richness". " diff=6823768&oldid=6556113. In German Wikipedia the name was written completely different. I posted some notes at talk:Muhammad_al-Idrisi and contacted Angela about the necessity to have a project on (mediaval) persons, Komenio, Kopernikus, Joan Lluís Vives etc. Note: I spend four days with investigations before adding the link!!!
Today we have a simpler solution. VIAF id's are a useful link to identify the names, to add interwiki links, to link to libraries and other sites. German Wikipedia has a database about 393,307 persons see [1]. de:template:NORMDATENCOUNT shows that 96,864 VIAF id's are known there. A clearing house for information mining of external media

I just posted the following at Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab):

I would like to see Wikipedians organize a clearing house for bits of information harvested from various types of media, indexing the finds by topic and where possible by names of articles for which the discovered information could possibly be of interest. This effort could be organized under the auspices of a dedicated WikiProject that would devise and set up the various mechanisms and protocols by which this enterprise would operate.

Now, I didn't have the current project readily in mind when I wrote my proposal, and I was referred to this project by the first commenter. As it appears to me, my proposal has a significantly larger scope, and also a different focus, than WikiProject Resource Exchange. I'd be happy though to receive responses from participants of this project. I suggest Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab) as the best place to discuss my proposal, but people might want to leave comments here and discuss it among project members also. __meco (talk) 14:11, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Cool news, HighBeam Research to donate free, 1-year accounts for Wikipedians

I have just finished a discussion with some generous folks at HighBeam Research--an online, pay-for-use search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias. The site has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam costs $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years.

But...as of yesterday, HighBeam has agreed to give free, full-access, 1-year accounts for numerous Wikipedia editors to use, at the discretion of the community. They do not expect there to be a problem with the number of these free accounts; however, the plan is for editors to have a minimum 1 year-old account with 1000 edits in order to qualify.

This is a proposal/announcement of the project not the signup process, which should begin in early April and will be widely publicized. Details about the project are available at WP:Highbeam. Have 6 clippings of these single one frame comics of Tom Sawyer in School Days from 1917 printing. Apparently I was told that Dwiggins was a friend of Mark Twain. Is this true?? UK census and other government statistics

Producing data for small areas, such as villages, can be problematic, not least due to the small populations often living in a village there is the risk of disclosure. In addition a villages can vary immensely in nature across the country so are difficult to define statistically.

To address the issue of disseminating data at small area level, the concept of Super Output Areas (SOAs) was devised. Details of SOAs and their rationale can be found here

A request for comments is pending on whether children's sources are generally reliable enough for adult-level facts so that Wikipedia editors need not be advised to look beyond a source itself to find out whether a source meets WP:RS.
