Court House Photos

I propose that photos of all Kansas county court houses be added to their respective article, and possibly the corresponding county seat article. This would serve to beautify the article and serve as a visual representation of the county. Help is needed adding them to their respective county pages by adding the following to the County Infobox template

I looked it over and made a few changes in wording, added some links and one citation. Unfortunately, the references listed aren't in line and I do not have access to the references listed so that they may be put in line. St. Francis Hospital

It appears that Ann Dunham was born at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. KAKE-TV published a fantastic report on the subject. I don't know much about St. Francis or Wichita, but if anyone has time to look into the details and gather more information about the decade Ann spent in Kansas, feel free to add the information to the Dunham article. Please also consider adding a WikiProject Kansas tag to the talk page if you think it is needed or if this project is interested in filling in the information about her early years. Thank you. George Tiller: Assassination or Murder?

I'm asking for some input over at the talk page for the Murder of George Tiller article. The article was originally "Murder of George Tiller", but was changed to "Assassination of George Tiller" a few months ago. Recently, a user changed it back to "Murder", which has led to a debate between that user and myself over which title is most appropriate. The two of us have debated the issue at the talk page, but so far we're the only ones to participate in the discussion, so I'd appreciate it if anybody would like to visit there and provide their own feedback. I'd like to establish some sort of consensus one way or the other... — Hunter Kahn (c) 02:21, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

I have looked at the talk page, and I greatly appreciate that everyone involved has maintained civil discourse while sticking to their personal opinions about the subject. I have also never really thought much about the assassination/killing arguments until this subject came up. I spent the better part of yesterday afternoon reading and researching the use of the words themselves in reference to Dr. Tiller's death. I must conclude that there is a bias associated with the word "assassinated". The bias comes from those who support abortion rights. While I really hate to inject this into the good discussion about what to title the article, it is clear in my mind that Dr. Tiller's supporters use the word "assassination". And, yes, I do agree that assassination is and has been used in other contexts to convey meaning wherein a politically/racially motivated killing has occurred. Dr. Tiller's killing is certainly viewed by a group of people to fit that category and it would seem to be a justified use of the word. However, to keep the information and facts about the event as unbiased as possible, I support the changing of the article title back to "Murder of George Tiller" (which it is at this time) and the links to that article from the George Tiller be changed from assassination to murder as well. It also appears to me that the information contained in the "Murder" article could be merged into the article about Dr. Tiller. Hate to muddy the waters with that suggestion, but it seems logical to me. -- Spacini (talk) 15:47, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

PRUDENCE CRANDALL

Prudence Crandall was born in Rhode Island on 3rd September, 1803. After being educated at a Society of Friends school in Plainfield, Connecticut, Crandall established her own private academy for girls at Canterbury.

The school was a great success until she decided to admit a black girl. When Crandall, a committed Quaker, refused to change her policy of educating black and white students together, parents began taking their children away from the school. With the support of William Lloyd Garrison and the Anti-Slavery Society, in March 1833, Crandall opened a school for black girls in Canterbury.

Local people were furious at Crandall's actions and attempts were made to prevent the school receiving essential supplies. The school continued and began to attract girls from Boston and Philadelphia. The local authorities then began using a vagrancy law against these students. These girls could now be given ten lashes of the whip for attending the school.

In 1834 Connecticut passed a law making it illegal to provide a free education for black students. When Crandall refused to obey the law she was arrested and imprisoned. Crandall was convicted but won the case on appeal. When news of the court decision reached Canterbury, a white mob attacked the school and threatened the lives of Crandall and her students. Silverdale(s) in Kansas

Are Silverdale Township, Cowley County, Kansas and Silverdale, Kansas the same place? Population and area suggest it, coords are different. A Kansas expert might like to sort them out. John Noland

I tried to improve an article on John Noland, a black Confederate with Quantrill's Raiders. Much of the online content, including books, are poorly sourced and not quite trustworthy; this could well benefit from local research and might be worth WikiProject Kansas considering adopting it. He's also buried near Kansas City, on the Missouri side, and I found a reference suggesting his tombstone was placed even in the wrong city. Could be a neat project if anyone's interested. Turner A. Gill

I've found a bit of a puzzle I'm hoping someone can solve for me. Turner A. Gill shows this Kansas City Mayor (1875-1877) as having the middle name Andrews. However Elmwood Cemetery (Kansas City, Missouri) lists Kansas City Mayor Turner Anderson Gill as a resident. I'm looking for an expert to figure out if they're really the same person or not. Personal Request To Add More Watches And Edit Tiny Towns

I'm sure many of you are watching numerous articles. I challenge each of you to WATCH more city articles in Kansas, especially ones that you have personal knowledge. I especially ask you to WATCH over and enhance articles for more tiny towns, since Wikipedia articles can provide a lot more benefit to them. If you have spent any amount of time in a tiny town in your life, or have relatives that live in a tiny town, please spend a little bit of time to enhance the article. I can take city and county articles for Barton, Cowley, Ellsworth, Lincoln, McPherson, Ottawa, Phillips, Rice, Russel, and Saline, as I have a basic geographical/demographical knowledge of those area. I don't know so much about enhancing the tiny town articles, though, because I can't think where to find the sourcing for communities like Bavaria, Glendale, etc (both of which happen to be articles I created with as much information I could source). US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

I removed the proposal for deletion tag for one reason: none of the other Wakarusa Festival articles had been nominated for deletion. This would leave a gap in the history of the festival. Instead, I proposed that all of the WF articles be merged into one article. If no one is willing to take up this cause, I will do so on August 1st (or soon thereafter). Kansas Navy?

I've seen a few mentions of the "Kansas Navy", apparently a sort of honorary organisation, perhaps comparable to the Kentucky Colonels. There are a few mentions of folks being made "honorary admirals" thereof (see [1]), etc. I'm not finding much hard info though, about when this custom started, what rules it has, etc. Does anyone have any better data source to explain this (apparent) social or fraternal Kansas organisation? G.A.R. Posts in Kansas

Today I began work on a list of the 400+ Grand Army of the Republic posts that were once active in Kansas. The article is located at List of Grand Army of the Republic Posts in Kansas and will take a great deal of time to complete. If anyone has pictures of the G.A.R. posts (usually called "halls"), please add them. In lieu of a remaining building, any monument erected by a Kansas G.A.R. post could be included instead.

I have noted that several posts on the comprehensive list put together by the Kansas State Historical Society closed, but the post number was reassigned to another post. I have made an error in the way those entries have been coded and will correct it very soon.

Three months later, the list is finished! I'm still seeking images of any of the Kansas G.A.R. halls that are still standing or historic photos in the public domain. Some posts also erected monuments, and photos of those would be fine, in my opinion, in lieu of a photo of the post hall. Suggestion to modify Member list structure

If its ok with the project I would like to change the structure of the member list from a table to a list like the one here. There are a couple reasons for this:

  1. Most importantly, Updating lists can be a bit confusing for casual or new users and it can sometimes turn new editors away
  2. Its a lot harder to update and maintain
  3. Changing the format to the one on the subpage allows us to see how many members there are
  4. Changing the format to the one on the subpage also allows us to easily see the members contributions so if they go inactive we can move them to the appropriate section
  5. Changing the foramt would put it in the same format used by most of the other US related projects and will make it look more consistent across US related projects. --Kumioko (talk) 20:05, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Suggestion for WikiProject United States to support WikiProject Kansas

Someone recently suggested that this project may be inactive or semi-active and that it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there has been several ongoing discussions and there appears to be ongoing activity on the project page so it doesn't appear as though the project needs the help. As one of the few projects that haven't been contacted though so I thought I would ask anyway in case the project may be interested. No problem I hope this helps to explain, sorry for the length. Just to clarify the project page with members stay basically as they are with the members able to dictate how things happen, scope of the project, etc. Its not going to be absorbed or dissolved in any way and the scope won't change unless the members want it too. The only change would be that the WikiProject banner would be replaced with the WPUS banner with WikiProject Kansas embedded within it. You can take a look at Category talk:Visitor attractions in South Carolina to see an example. Please don't look at this as a badge of shame for the project. But the project itself has little activity and I would like to try and change that. Partly through automation of messages and alerts but also in member activity. All the individual projects will function as they do and the WPUS project will perform certain tasks just as the Federal government does things and the states do things also. All the projects use a standard group of parameters (Needs infobox, image, attention, etc), and the banner allows for things like project to do lists, articles with to do lists and articles with comments. I am working on developing some bot tasks that would automate the adding and removing of some of the parameter values like needs infobox, image, attention, etc. and hope to have those out in the next couple months. It also reduces the number of banners on the talk page of the articles. All the projects use the same article classes and importance. I notice this project doesn't use FM-class and that is something I would like to adjust.

How it will be supported can depend on what the members of the project want but typically WPUS is a bigger project with a lot more members and the more members we have collectively the better for all, it has a newsletter, a monthly collaboration, multiple bots that run actively through the articles for various things (as can be seen on the members page) with more being setup as we go along. This means that it will be seen by a lot of people in a lot of ways. Up till now we have mostly been concentrating on building up the project but hoepfully by the end of the month or next month we are going to be starting to do some drives to build up articles, create new ones, etc. I hope this helps. --Kumioko (talk) 20:00, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Any new things for the project would be great. I'm currently working on updating every city article in Kansas, and doing: add census table, update 2010 census count, add official link to city website, add school district, add maps, cleanup section names, delete vandalism, section reordering, various other cleanup. I started at the Colorado border and working eastward. It will likely take a 1-2 more months for me to finish. I'm approximately at the half-way point. So where did you say that you were going to "hijack" the WikiProject Kansas banner that shows up on the discusion pages? To be honest I thought the banner transition would have been done a couple months ago but the bot operators have all been busy so I had to do it manually until I could get a bot approved of my own for the task which should happen soon. The main reason to replace the banner was too take advantage of all the extra parameters and logic built into the WPUS banner as well as to standardize all the supported articles. Your correct that some articles do currently have the problem of multiple banners and that will be fixed very soon. Once I get all the banners replaced then I will go back and fix that as well as perform several other tasks as well such as identify the articles that need images, Infoboxes, attention, etc. I hope this helps. --Kumioko (talk) 21:10, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
