Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

FFD discussion comment request

User:Damiens.rf has just tagged John Cage's photo for deletion: Wikipedia:Files for deletion/2009 June 26#John-Cage-1956.jpg. I'm not a fair use expert, so comments from others would be appreciated, particularly because the result of the discussion will affect other articles on contemporary composers (we often have to use copyrighted press photographs). --Jashiin (talk) 16:16, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Difference between contemporary (art) music and contemporary classical music

I don´t know if this has been adressed previously, but I haven´t found any clear statement in the articles so I assume the question is valid: What is the difference if any between contemporary (art) music and contemporary classical music?

I think a pretty clear dividing line could be stated between orchestral music and chamber music which quite obviously follow the classical music tradition on the one hand, and newer forms invented in the 20th century, eg electroacoustic music, experimental music, sound art and improvised forms of art music on the other. Inactive?

I notice that this project has been tagged as "inactive". What exactly does this mean? As a member of the project, I have personally been anything but inactive, but I am reluctant to remove the tag without better understanding if there are specific criteria relating to the project page.—Jerome Kohl (talk) 15:43, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Please see the discussion at the Classical Music project here. We obviously want to see contemp. music articles developed. How can that be achieved? When this project was started a lot of effort went into bannering — work that was never completed and may not have been productive anyway.--Klein zach 00:41, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Two contemporary composers

Anyone know anything about Brian Inglis or Howard Thomas? Ruth Holton gave first performances of works by them. I've managed to find likely links for the other composers she gave premieres for, but not these two.--Peter cohen (talk) 18:50, 28 October 2009 (UTC)

When we get a chance we will certainly look into these composers for you. Note, though, that the mission statement is undergoing a considerable overhaul; nevertheless, I suspect these composers, if active now or in the past 20 years, will be unequivocally covered by this project. Major issues to resolve

The following articles overlap and the situation need to be rationalized: contemporary music, contemporary classical music, 20th-century classical music, and 21st-century classical music. The following issues are the most urgent (in order of importance):

It has been suggested that contemporary music and contemporary classical music be merged, but no consensus has been reached as to which way.
The article 21st-century classical music is contentious. It is claimed that the title is not the proper name for this period and that the article's subject properly belongs in contemporary music/contemporary classical music. (Note that I wrote the article, in good faith, following up on a suggestion.)
20th-century classical music appears to end in 1980, or so, despite the period defined in the Periods of European art music box.
None of the articles fully expore the music of the period in question.

Other issues exist, as well, but those above need immeadiate attention.
