Check over-categorization[edit]

What does the "Check over-categorization" option do? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 16:07, 17 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Show hidden categories in red[edit]

The list of categories looks the same. It is only after the user adds one that doesn't show up after being added, that one discovers he added a hidden category (shown elsewhere on the page)! Jidanni (talk) 04:06, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Jidanni, please try enabling the checkbox: Preferences → Appearance → Advanced options → check Show hidden categories. —andrybak (talk) 09:52, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I had that checked. Jidanni (talk) 13:26, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Can't disable HotCat[edit]

I disabled "HotCat" function but it still shows a categories in the down of article. What should i do? Vladimir1371 (talk) 17:19, 20 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Vladimir1371, the categories are part of the regular interface of Wikipedia (powered by MediaWiki). All readers see the categorization at the bottom of all pages. Does that answer your question? —andrybak (talk) 09:54, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HotCat is not working for me[edit]

It's enabled in the WP:PREF but its not working for me. What could be the issue? Saqib (talk) 09:25, 24 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bulk cat additions[edit]

Could somebody please explain how to add Category:Companies in the S&P 400 to all the pages in Template:S&P 400 companies ? 92.71.60.61 (talk) 12:33, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It's simply placed in the transcludable (outside the noinclude tags) text of the template as stated at WP:TCAT; which also discourages using templates to categorize in this way. Note this would only work for the articles that already have the navbox to begin with, and I've found at least one where that's not the case.
Later today, I would be happy to just go ahead add the category (and the template) to any that don't already have it. Shouldn't really take me that long. --DB1729talk 13:34, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JFYI, for semi-automatic addition of a single category to a multitude of pages, the best fit is the Cat-a-lot tool, not HotCat. For trickier cases (e.g. adding a category and a template), there is WP:AWB and WP:JWB. —andrybak (talk) 13:58, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

 Done – Task completed. --DB1729talk 20:45, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Thank you so much. I spent about a week creating the category, a further week creating the template, and a further 2 weeks adding it to (almost) all the pages. And in the space of 2 hours, you added the category to them all! Really allreciate your effort, so fast, and you've been really helpful. A true selfless hero. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.71.60.61 (talk) 09:44, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
hehe. You're welcome. Glad to help out. I had figured it would take a little over an hour to maybe 90 minutes at most, but the Wikimedia servers went out twice during my session (I don't think my speed overloaded it:) I actually felt I was taking my time). The outages gave me a couple nice little breaks though, which probably helped. Cheers! DB1729talk 10:57, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
