Is it really worth having this page? You're not allowed to take photographs in the Library. Why not just add them as a request to curators? Regards, RockdrumBa-dumCrash(Driving well?) 13:25, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Several reasons, we are allowed to take photographs within (and outside) the library building. This excludes taking photographs of documents that you have requested as a reader or photographs in reading rooms or photographs of items on exhibition which are specifically indicated as no photography (i.e. general photographs of public areas and features such as statues and artwork should be okay unless signed otherwise). The appropriate license for such photographs would fall under the freedom of panorama criteria. We can also add images of objects in the British Museum published in other forums or sources but are obviously public domain, such illustrations or photographs taken before 1923 and published in documents no longer in copyright but copies happen to be in the British Museum. So, for example I would like a photograph of the unique "Perkins D cylinder" which has been on public display and there would be absolutely no issue with copyright but we do not seem to have a photograph of and there might be someone who happens to have a photograph that they just have not made freely available on Commons or Flickr yet.
I agree that we can add items to this list that curators might help out with, being on this list does not exclude that option and I would expect the curators to be quite interested in checking through this list, particularly for key photographs that are a stumbling block for getting our articles to, say, FA status.
