Admit it! You use Wikipedia extensively. Who doesn't? But do you use it for medical information? Your patients do! Wikipedia is now the most widely used medical reference in the world. This course will help you better understand the WP “ecosystem” including Wikiprojects, Translators Without Borders, and the offline Wikipedia health app.

Welcome to your Wikipedia course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for this rotation, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Monday 11/25 @ 10am - 4pm: Mission Hall, room 1407

  • Overview of the course
  • Understanding Wikipedia as a community, we'll discuss its expectations and etiquette.
  • Additional content will include:
    • presentation by Amin: "Becoming a Wikipedian in medical school"
    • lunch on your own and complete all Wiki Ed assigned trainings
    • discuss workplan, Wikiproject Medicine style guidelines, begin selecting articles, begin designing your teams and workplans

These are the Wiki Ed produced training modules that I believe are important and relevant to our work in this rotation.  You are expected to complete all of them by the end of your lunch break on Day 1 of the course.

Assignment - Workplan

By 9:30am on Mon 12/2 (e.g. before our first WP-WIP), post your final Workplan to your selected Wikipedia's talk page, so that you can engage with the Wikipedian community members who are interested & actively following your article.  If you are working on a team, I want you to be explicit about what section(s) you will individually be responsible for. 

Consider explicitly declaring any/all of the following (but don't feel limited to these):

  • Is each fact referenced with an appropriate, reliable reference?
  • Is everything in the article relevant to the article topic? Is there anything that distracted you?
  • Is the article neutral? Are there any claims, or frames, that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Where does the information come from? Are these neutral sources? If biased, is that bias noted?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Check a few citations. Do the links work? Is there any close paraphrasing or plagiarism in the article?
  • Is any information out of date? Is anything missing that could be added?
  • Which sections will you prioritize?
  • What resources do you intend to look up, and when?
  • How will you decide what things (signs, symptoms, side-effects, etc.) to explicitly include? To explicitly exclude?
  • Will you also embed additional links to other Wiki pages?
  • How will you ensure you avoid "doctor-speak" and not use jargon?

  1. Create your slack username and account.

  3. Tell Amin your slack username and he will add you to the private wikimed_dec_2019 channel
  4. You can create any needed additional channels for work teams.  Be sure to add Amin to those channels so he can contribute PRN

Assignment - Peer review an article

Guiding framework

Please perform peer reviews beginning on Wed 12/11 after our WIP#3

  • What should a peer-review look like? During our discussion in class on Tues 11/26, we will define specific attributes we will itemize here.
  • Peer review of Dec 2019:
    • Assume good intent (from the peer-reviewer)
    • Give positive feedback as well as constructive feedback!
    • Peer-reviewer should read the entire WP page before writing the review
    • Respond in a timely manner
    • When possible give suggested improvements/edits and your rationale for why you are making this recommendation (e.g. not just "delete" but "delete this sentence because...")
    • Use neutral tone
    • Read the author's work plan before conducting your peer-review
  • Logistical Details:

    • Peer reviews are DUE by end of week 3 = Before you go to sleep on Sun 12/15. 
    • Post the peer-review on the TALK page of the article you are reviewing.
  • Here's a link to a wikipedia peer-review rubric offered by Wiki Ed for evaluating student contributions to Wikipedia articles.  While we will NOT formally use the point system, it does provide a nice complement to our "home-grown" peer-review process.

Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

How to respond to the peer-reviewer's comments? We'll insert this here during class discussion on Tues 11/26

  • Assuming good good intent from the peer-reviewer (e.g. this is not personal)
  • Thank the reviewer for their excellent review
  • Take all suggestions seriously but OK to use your own judgement
  • Describe why you disagree with suggested recommendations

Logistical Details:

  • Post your responses to peer-review on the TALK page near the peer review.
  • This will allow other Wikipedians to engage with the recommendations long after you finish this course

On Fri 12/20 from 10-11pm we will convene for a meeting to share accomplishments and discuss lessons learned. Final presentations will be structured as follows: round robin "reports" (maximum of 10 minutes each) from each of you as follows:

  • What did I accomplish this month (broad overview)?
  • What did I learn?
  • What will I take forward with me into the future?
  • Now in hindsight, is there anything I would have done differently?
