The course is an "experience of literature" offered as a general education course to non-English majors. We cover various forms like novels, novellas, plays, short stories, and poetry. Students engage with the literature, literary theory, the historical issues surrounding given pieces, and their impact on popular culture. Though this is a literature class--broadly defined--student writings follow a reception history model, allowing students to view and understand the ways that literature is consumed/received by audiences at different times and different places and how such consumption often leads to a rearranging of elements that fit changing cultural expectations.
