This introductory course uses humanities and critical-cultural approaches to understand the forms, content, and cultures of digital media and how they enable our participation in digital culture in novel and productive ways. Course materials will examine the histories of the “new” media and their digital forms, how they invite us to participate in cultural production through various social practices, self-expression, and knowledge production, as well as bringing to the fore questions of access, inequality, and representation. Students will develop their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills, and apply it to produce original digital media content that engages with the norms and practices of widely used digital platforms.
