Over the course of this semester, we have considered why architecture remains among the most male-dominated of all the professions. Moreover, when women have been able to work as architects, their production has often been overlooked or ignored. This assignment will give students the opportunity to participate directly in the documentation of women’s contributions to the built environment.

Your assignments will consist of two parts. First, you will research the work of a specific woman architect, to be selected from the lists of female architects and designers given here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Women_architects

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_women_architects

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_architects#Additional_African_American_Women_Architects

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_women_interior_designers

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Interior_designers

To see this list, click on the gray button labeled "Do It!": https://tinyurl(.)com/yd9rngcn (article stubs for women architects)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Architect_stubs (more stubs, some women)

Women in Red (no article exists yet):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Architecture

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_in_Red/Missing_articles_by_occupation/Architects

You will work to find five additional sources for the architect you chose, to be incorporated into their Wikipedia page. Like architecture, editing Wikipedia is a male-dominated field. This assignment also addresses imbalance by having you learn to edit Wikipedia and add your sources to the article’s reference list.

You will also write a 2000-word essay that will discuss your chosen architect’s more in-depth, and incorporate one of the themes that we have addressed in class.

In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia assignment

Welcome to the Wikipedia assignment timeline! The timeline guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules to help you complete each step.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Due By 9/29
Choose your architect or designer, create a Wikipedia account

By class time, Thursday, Sept. 29:

  • Choose your subject: select any of the bios from the lists provided in the "Designing Women" description on the Home page.
  • Create a Wikipedia account. (Because of Wikipedia's technical restraints, if you receive a message that you cannot create an account, you may need to wait and try again off campus, or the next day.)
  • Join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
Assignment - Due by 10/18
Learn about Wikipedia

By class time, Tuesday 10/18:

  • First, make sure you have joined this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
  • Complete the two Training Modules above.
  • Have information (including links and citations) for two potential sources:
    • One source should be specifically about your subject;
    • The second source should be about the type of work they did, or their peer architects/designers, etc. ( a contextual source)

Next
look for sources, draft in the sandbox

By the next deadline (11/17) you should have a draft in your sandbox for adding at least 3 new sources to your chosen article. The following steps will help you get there:

Step 1
Sources for Wikipedia & what's a sandbox?

For this assignment, you're being asked to contributea final number of at least 5 sources. These sources must conform to Wikipedia's standards for authoratitive publications. The first module will help you understand what sources meet the standards for Wikipedia articles; the second module will introduce you to your sandbox, where you will draft your work.

Step 2
Collect your sources in the Sandbox

Use these weeks to collect at least 3 of your sources in your Sandbox.

Don't forget you can ask for help from:

  • your librarians, Sara (spraguesa@hollins.edu) and Maryke (mbarber@hollins.edu)
  • your professor, and your SSL
  • or ask question of the Wikipedia Expert using the Get Help button at the top of this page.
