The main work of the course is writing about poetry in the medium of the digital encyclopedia. What kind of writing is suitable for Wikipedia? What poets and poems should be represented, and what information should be given? How is Wikipedia different from pre-digital encyclopedias? The course covers the core principles and the stylistic specifications of Wikipedia writing. It also covers basics of verse analysis, useful for reading poetry and assessing sources. Analytical assignments support and contrast with encyclopedia writing. Other topics include the history of encyclopedias and their function in the digital age. Among the goals of the course are writing with a broad audience in mind and contributing to the world’s body of knowledge about poetry.
