The railroad of South Manchester Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the central part of Connecticut. The owned mileage extends southerly from Manchester, Conn., to South Manchester, Conn., a distance of 1.932 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 1.319 miles. Its road thus embraces 3.251 miles of all tracks owned. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.


Corporate history.—The carrier was incorporated on May 30, 1866, by special act of the State of Connecticut, and was organized January 26, 1869. The road was built by Cheney Brothers, under contract with independent contractors, in the period between January and June 12, 1869, on which latter date it was opened for operation. The principal office of the carrier is at South Manchester, Conn. It is controlled by Cheney Brothers through ownership of the outstanding capital stock.
