Red Sox Free Agent Summary

The Red Sox have so far been involved in many signings over the off season, and with the winter meetings coming to a close, here is a roundup of the free agent action:

Curt Schilling[edit]

Pitcher Curt Schilling agreed to a one-year deal with the Red Sox on November 6. In 2007, Schilling was 9-8 with a 3.87 ERA, second among Sox starters. He was also 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA during the playoffs. This will possibly be his last season playing in professional baseball, due to age. Schilling turned 41 years old on November 14.

Mike Lowell[edit]

All-Star third baseman and 2007 World Series MVP Mike Lowell agreed to a three year deal with the Red Sox on November 19. Lowell was reportedly in contract talks with the New York Yankees, as they had offered him a four year deal, what Lowell wanted.

Mike Timlin[edit]

Relief pitcher Mike Timlin agreed to a one year deal with the Red Sox on December 7 Timlin was 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA and a save over 50 pitching appearances.

Eric Gagné[edit]

Relief pitcher Eric Gagné signed with the Milwaukee Brewers. Gagne had a difficult 2007 year, as he had a 6.75 ERA. He is likely to replace Brewers closer Francisco Cordero, who signed with the Reds.

Doug Mirabeli[edit]

Doug Mirabelli, backup catcher and catcher for Tim Wakefield, agreed to a 3 year, $37 million deal with the Red Sox.

Unsigned[edit]

Kevin Cash, Matt Clement, Eric Hinske, and Bobby Kielty all remained unsigned.
