Miriam Margolyes[edit]

How is Miriam Margolyes's last name pronounced? Aɴɢʀ (talk) 08:38, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MAH-gə-leez, in my experience. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 10:19, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Confirmed by the first three YouTube videos of interviews with her that I looked at. (I should have just done that in the first place rather than bothering you.) Before reading her article, I sort of vaguely assumed she was of Hungarian extraction and her name would be pronounced with some anglicization of /ˈmɒrɡojɛʃ/. Guess not. Thanks for your help! I wonder if the name Margolyes is etymologically the same as Margulies. Both women are said in their articles to be of Eastern European Jewish extraction. Aɴɢʀ (talk) 14:03, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is a Jewish surname (also Margolin, Margolis, Margolius, Margulis, Margulies, Margulius) from Greek μαργαρίτης "pearl" (from Boris Ottokar Unbegaun's Russian Surnames).--Lüboslóv Yęzýkin (talk) 16:51, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Or MAR-gə-leez, in the American Midwest. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:11, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
