The Soviet Union's attitude towards the partition of India[edit]

From the brief mentions in The Shadow of the Great Game by Narendra Singh Sarila, it would appear that it was publicly opposed, but more for reasons of propaganda expediency in rhetorically opposing British imperialism than because of any deep policy preference. According to I. Petrov in the Red Star of July 31st 1947: "The British plan for the partition of India, by artificially separating the industrial from the agricultural areas, sought to disrupt the economic life, and this will result in weakening the political economy of India." But in a meeting with the British ambassador on March 25th, Stalin said he wouldn't interfere in India, and it seems that he didn't in any significant way...
