Murders Row / Dean Martin[edit]

I was watching "Murders Row" with Dean Martin and the song "Roll Out The Barrel" was played and to me it sounded like Judy Garland was singing. In the scene a Black haired woman was singing. I was wondering if she was lip syncing to the song or was she actually singing. I hope you can help. In such scenes of multiple singers (and/or musicians), what you are hearing in a typical film is not what was actually being sung (etc.) on the set, because inevitable mistakes by one or more of the performers, unwanted sounds off-camera, and so on, would frequently spoil a take, necessitating many takes (all costing money) before an acceptable version was captured.

Instead the scene is usually shot with the participants really singing (and/or playing) so as to capture a convincing appearance, but the sound recording is replaced by one of singers, musicians and Foley artists – sometimes the same people actually filmed and sometimes others – performing separately and/or in ensemble in a recording studio while watching the film footage so as to carefully co-ordinate their better-quality and better recorded renditions with the visuals. (Cartoons are of course first drawn, then given voiceovers and musical background in a similar manner.)

Could Judy Garland have lipsynced in the recording studio for this presumably minor character? It's possible, but reading the account of her professional career around the time the film was shot and edited, it seems to me doubtful that she would be interested in such a minor job, that the studio would have wanted to pay the sort of fee that she (in contrast to a less-prestigious singer) would have commanded, or that her involvement would not have been publicised or at least have come to light. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195 90.208.90.210 (talk) 15:34, 12 January 2022 (UTC).[reply]
