Star Wars Canon[edit]

With the (relatively recent) Disney acquisition of the rights to Star Wars, it was announced that the Extended Universe canon was being demoted to a newly created "second tier", "Legends", and that only the 6 films would be officially considered true "Canon".

Has Disney announced which versions of the original trilogy are canon? There are many differences, major and minor, between the theatrical release and the 1997 special edition and the 2004 special edition. 97.90.151.30 (talk) 23:33, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia's article titled Star Wars canon. The canon isn't quite JUST the six films. It's the six films, the Clone Wars TV series, and any and all official storylines in any form released after the cutoff date of April 25, 2014. Under the pre-Disney rules, the so-called "G-canon" (that is, the six films) gave primacy to the most recently released version as "official canon" among the 6 films (see Star_Wars_canon#The_Holocron, "G-canon is George Lucas canon: Considered absolute canon, it includes Episodes I–VII (the most recently released versions)..." (bold mine). Since the sale to Disney and the "rebooted" canon, however, I'm not sure any statement has been made. I think we're stuck with going with the last known status of the canon in this regard, which is "the most recently released versions". --Jayron32 23:44, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Related question: Clone Wars timeline[edit]

On a related note, how do Star Wars: The Clone Wars (film), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008 TV series) and Star Wars: Clone Wars (2003 TV series) fit together? I'm showing my girlfriend the films for the first time, in Machete order (4, 5, 2, 3, 6), and seem to remember the 2003 series fitting quite nicely between 2 and 3, and answering questions like "who is this 4 armed robot and why is he athsmatic?". But now there's another 5 series and a film, and it's not totally clear how they all fit together - or which are worth watching. Also, given one of the strengths of the Machete order is that the identity of Darth Sidious is not revealed until Episode 3, would adding the 2003 series spoil that?MChesterMC (talk) 09:23, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@MChesterMC, the 2003 series is considered non-canon in accordance with the canon reconstruction. Also, watching The Clone Wars (2008 series) can be difficult because they are not in order. The 2008 film takes place directly after the 2008 episode called "The Hidden Enemy". I don't know how the 2003 series fits in with this. Here is the order:

  • Episode I
  • Episode II
  • The Hidden Enemy (episode of 2008 series)- Worth Watching
  • 2008 Film
  • Episode III- Worth Watching
  • Solo
  • Rebels (Series)- Worth Watching
  • Rogue One- Worth Watching
  • Episode IV- WW
  • Episode V- WW
  • Episode VI- WW
  • The Mandalorian-WW
  • Resistance (Series)- Okay-Note this series also happens during and after VII and during VIII
  • Episode VII - WW
  • Episode VIII- Okay
  • Episode IX - WW
