2012 European Grand Prix[edit]

Two trivia questions about yesterdays awesome F1 grand prix:

1) When was the last time (if ever) that three FORMER (non-reigning) world champions shared the podium?

2) Have there ever been that many championships (10) represented on a podium before? (The combined number of c'ships among the three men is 10 - MSC 7, ALO 2, RAI 1). The same three last shared a podium at the 2005 French Grand Prix but at the time neither Alonso nor Raikkonen had won championships.

OK I have done some research for myself, it seems the answer to question 2 is no. Without going through every race record, it seems impossible due to the different era's that Schumi, Fangio and Prost raced in.

The next highest # of championships represented on a podium were the nine races in 2006 where Schumi (7x champ) and Alonso (1x champ) shared the podium - Bahrain, San Marino, Europe, Spain, Great Britain, Canada, France, Turkey and China.

Before that, at the 1993 Japanese Grand Prix and the 1993 Australian Grand Prix, Prost and Senna shared the podium, at the time with 6 c'ships between them (Prost recently crowned his 3rd), and also the 2001 United States Grand Prix where Schumacher and Hakkinen shared the podium, at the time also having 6 championships between them (Schumi recently crowned his 4th).

But they both involve only two racers on the podium. The next highest I can find with all three drivers contributing are the 2011 Japanese Grand Prix and the 2011 Indian Grand Prix, where recently crowned Vettel shared the podium with Alonso and Button both times, for a 5 combined c'ships

(Of course I am not counting times where Schumi or Fangio were the sole champions on the podium)

But I still need an answer for question 1! I'm guessing the answer will be no, and this is another world first! Ballchef (talk) 04:13, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Three champions have shared the podium on 11 18 previous occasions: http://www.formula1onlive.com/2010/06/three-world-champions-on-podium-since.html. As far as I can tell, the only time that the reigning champion has not been among them was the 1968 United States Grand Prix, with an all-British podium of Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill and John Surtees. The reigning champion, the oft-forgotten Denny Hulme, retired on lap 92 of 108. Sorry, I should check my facts more carefully. That article was out of date after the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix. By my reckoning, although there were no further occurrences in 2010, in 2011 there were a massive 7, for a total of 18. The bit about the reigning champion not being involved still stands though, since Vettel was on every 'podium of champions' in 2011. - Cucumber Mike (talk) 11:25, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is hard to answer without being more specific. Do you count compilations with a few new tracks? Do you count all new "rarities" or poshumous releases? How long does the release have to be to count? Do you count releases as part of a band or only solo work? Anyway this question seems to be asked a lot- google "most studio albums". Some common answers: Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Slim Dusty, Frank Zappa, Elvis Presley, Tangerine Dream, Pete Namlook. Staecker (talk) 17:17, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
