I was watching on episode of Emergency! on hulu. Before the opening credits, Johnny was in the vehicle bay, working on the squad. While that was happening, Roy was in the locker room, gargling warm salt water. Johnny and Chet went to see what the ruckus was about. When Roy was on his third gargle, Johnny and Chet came into the locker room. Chet remarked the gargling sounded like the percussion section of a rock group. Longest as in a really long song (such as Thick as a Brick) or the longest run on the Top 40 (such as How Do I Live)? Neither example is the longest - just what I know off the top of my head as being long. Sorry, but more clarification is needed. Consider Do You Feel Like We Do. It is a 17-minute song. The 7-minute version was #1 on the charts, not the 17-minute version. However, it is often referred to a 17-minute song that was #1 in the charts (which is not entirely true). This is similar to Shine On You Crazy Diamond - a very long song with a much shorter single. Correct, the charted version is barely over 4 minutes. Stairway to Heaven, on the other hand, charted with the 8:02 version. Just checking... The single version of Hey Jude is 7:12, longer than the 7:05 album version (weird). -- kainaw ™ 20:29, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Neither "Stairway to Heaven" nor "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" were released as singles at the time of their parent album being released. Correct. I have not placed a stipulation that the song must have charted during the initial release and I do not believe that the questioner has either. If that stipulation is made, the longest rock song will surely be something much more recent since the 45 single placed a physical limit on how long a single could be. What was the length of the charted single for November Rain (album version was 8:57)? The article talks about a ~4 min acoustic version but that's not it. There's Television – Marquee Moon, which hit top 40 in the UK (not released in the US) and is 9:58 – while even that isn't the full album version, it still ended up taking up both sides of a 7".
