mshome.net in Debian /etc/resolv.config[edit]

What is this mshome.net in Debian /etc/resolv.config and how has it appeared here (I didn't put it there and it looks like a Microsoft thing)?

The whole file is:

search mshome.net
nameserver 192.168.137.1

It's probably not coming from Debian, /etc/resolv.conf contains the information sent from your DNS server (assuming you didn't configure your DNS settings on the Debian box manually). I'm guessing that 192.168.137.1 is a Windows box that's either set up as a DNS server or an ICS host. Random character sequence (talk) 15:56, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm connected to another router now from another ISP, and the lines above turned to

nameserver 8.8.8.8

Yep, looks like that router is configured to use Google's public DNS. The other network looks like it's using an internal DNS server with an unconfigured domain (mshome.net is basically a default domain, kind of like how older versions of Windows defaulted to the "WORKGROUP" workgroup). It doesn't really affect anything as far as getting online goes, as long as the local DNS server is configured correctly. Random character sequence (talk) 16:30, 8 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
