Women in Red - a Wikipedia editathon - Celebrate Women in STEM You are invited!
The Women in Red - a Wikipedia editathon - Celebrate Women in STEM will be held on Wednesday, 8 March, 2023 at the PC Training Room, McClay Library, QUB from 1:30pm until 5:00pm. Wikipedians of all experience levels are welcome to join us! We will copyedit, source, and write articles and can teach you how to do these things too!

To celebrate International Women's Day, Wikimedia Community Ireland and the SMDBS SWAN Gender Equality Committee invites you to celebrate the work of women scientists through a Wikipedia Women in Red Editathon.

Women in Red is a Wikipedia editathon celebrating the lives and contributions of all the inspiring women scientists missing from the world's go-to site for information.

  • Wikipedia is the fifth most visited website in the world but lacks diversity in its editors and its articles.
  • Only 19.3% of biographies on English Wikipedia, the world's go-to source of information, are about women.
  • This event will focus on improving the representation of inspiring women online.

Wikipedians of all experience levels are welcome to join us! No prior knowledge required as training will be provided for those with no Wikipedia editing experience. We will copyedit, source, and write articles and can teach you how to do these things too!

Participants will learn how to edit Wikipedia pages during this event and will be supported over the afternoon to help create new pages for notable individuals who are not currently on Wikipedia. Each participant will be assigned a women scientist together with appropriate references.

(We'll also ensure that you are sustained with tea, coffee and traybakes.)

Rebecca O'Neill will be lead trainer.

Booking[edit]

Everyone is welcome! Just book your place on Eventbrite.

How to Prepare[edit]

  1. CREATE A WIKIPEDIA ACCOUNT (if you don't already have one)

Please set up an account before the event if at all possible. Very few details are needed: a Username, password, and we recommend giving your email, if only to be reminded of your password when you forget it. The short Wikipedia:Tutorial/Registration explains why this is a good idea.

If you like, you can also learn a little about editing ahead of time here: w:en:Wikipedia:Tutorial, or see Getting started on Wikipedia for more information
