Diligent Corporation History and Acquisitions - open edit request

Rumble Seamounts

I'm pulling together some stuff in preparation for an article about the rumble seamounts, but I've been in two minds about whether it would be better for articles on the individual seamounts (eg. Rumble III, Rumble IV and so on) or for one article on the seamount group as a whole (eg. Rumble seamounts) – does anyone have any thoughts on what the best approach to take would be? Well, if you are unsure, I'd write the overarching article first. If there's enough material that justifies a split, this will become obvious soon enough. Which would then leave you with a page that you could use for disambiguation purposes. Schwede66 05:03, 8 May 2022 (UTC)

Discussion of the use of Indigenous names for Australian cities which NZ editors may be able to help with

Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board#Indigenous names may be of interest to members of this project. It's safe to say that NZ is much further down the path of commonly recognising and using indigenous names for places than Australia, and there have been some good discussions of that topic here. Auckland Museum Wikipedia & Aotearoa NZ Histories Curriculum research update and a new project

Kia ora koutou. In March last year Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum applied for Wikimedia Foundation funding to investigate teachers' attitudes towards using Wikipedia in secondary school classrooms, with a focus on teaching the upcoming compulsory Aotearoa NZ Histories Curriculum. The TLDR is:

  • Most participants saw Wikipedia as a reliable resource for national Aotearoa New Zealand history content and valuable to both inform their teaching and for their students to access information for enquiry-based studies.
  • The question of reliability was a concern when it came to accessing local histories on Wikipedia. The encyclopedia was not generally seen as an accurate source of information in this area.
  • Teachers saw Wikipedia as having the potential to contribute to how students learn to think critically about sources and develop the skills to differentiate between knowledge that is supported by reliable evidence and unverified narratives.
  • While a substantial number of participants thought articles were well written and accessible, there were some who indicated their students found the reading level of the articles too advanced.

A big thanks to the members of this community for their support of this project. There’s some really interesting data that was gathered, and I encourage anyone interested in the use of Wikipedia in the classroom to take a look.

New Zealand CPI index for calculating inflation on historical sums now available

Hi everyone, I stumbled into the really nifty {{inflation}} template recently, for being able to say things like "Doris donated £10,000 to the organisation in 1965 (equivalent to $410,000 in 2021)". Thanks largely to @Zoozaz1 and @Paine Ellsworth we can now do that for New Zealand historical sums! If you want to see the nitty gritties, have a look also at {{inflation/NZ}} and {{inflation/NZ/dataset}} (which you don't use directly, but are used by the main template to calculate everything). For example, on the Hannah Playhouse article we need to show what NZ£150,000 in 1965 is in todays money: 

{{Inflation|NZ|300000|start_year=1965 | fmt=eq | r=-3 }}

Which produces: "equivalent to $6,370,000 in 2021." Note that if we are using amounts from before New Zealand decimalised the currency in 1967, we need to double it (i.e. NZ£150,000 = NZ$300,000). 2022 Budget

Hi there, I am working on a draft article for the 2022 New Zealand budget. I am issuing a call for other editors who would like to work on the article. I am drawing on several sources including a Radio New Zealand article. I want to avoid copyright violations. Appreciate feedback and advice. Andykatib 23:44, 23 May 2022 (UTC)

In my opinion this draft article looks good and is ready to be published in the mainspace. You've used several sources so that should be okay regarding copyvio. JaumeBG (talk) 09:21, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

So I haven't been able to attend to the article. I agree that it will be a good idea to have a mainspace article for the 2022 NZ budget. It will still need more work particularly on natural resources and defence spending but at least people have a mainspace article that they can work on. Andykatib 23:58, 31 May 2022 (UTC)

Platinum Jubilee

Is anyone interested in making an article on the 1953–54 royal tour of New Zealand, with the Platinum Jubilee around the corner? It's on my long-list of projects, but it's a little outside my regular scope. At the moment, it's only briefly mentioned in the article Royal visits to New Zealand, but there are plenty of good sources out there ([1][2][3][4]) and some good fair use images available, too ([5][6]). --Prosperosity (talk) 22:30, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

NZ Biodiversity sites deprecated

The organisation that I work for Landcare Research has deprecated some old websites with biodiversity that are extensively cited on wikipedia. The flora / inverts / and fungi data has migrated to https://biotanz.landcareresearch.co.nz so it is not gone but all the URLs are different. I will try to convince to developers to get a per URL redirect in place, but perhaps that won't happen. The "key" is the same though so manual migration is possible and I have done this for most fungi pages, e.g. see this edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ileodictyon_cibarium&diff=prev&oldid=1091289336&diffmode=source

However other sites will be gone for good e.g. https://www.bugz.org.nz/ there are quite a number of cites to the website (500+) see: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?target=http%3A%2F%2F*.bugz.org.nz&title=Special%3ALinkSearch&title=Special%3ALinkSearch ideally these would be archived with the bot: https://iabot.toolforge.org/index.php?page=runbotsingle&action=analyzepage but not sure how to bulk archive an existing links that seems to only be an option for single URLs.

Hi User:Onco p53, I've asked some folk I know at the Internet Archive to give us a hand to archive the links in BUGZ. I don't know whether they will but it's worth asking. I've also begged Landcare Research via twitter to redirect links. Who knows whether this will work but it's worth a try. User:Onco p53, further to my above reply, I've requested that the National Library of NZ archive the BUGZ website (whether or when this will happen I do not know). I'm also in discussions with Mark Graham from the Internet Archive to archive the BUGZ site and all the links to the digitised biodiversity literature so that it is available for future use in the Wayback Machine. Also, once archived, the Wikipedia citations to that resource will then be able to have the archived link added to the reference (if they haven't already) by a bot that currently undertakes this type of work. I'm also intending to email Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research directly to also try to convince the developers to put a url redirect in place for the data that have been migrated to biotanz. I understand it is likely you will be receiving an email from Mark about these issues, so just giving you a heads up! - Ambrosia10 (talk)

Development West Coast have kindly agreed to support another short Wikipedian at Large contract on the West Coast, to cover areas that were missed the first time around: Lake Brunner, Te Wahipounamu, Ōpārara Arches, and Punakaiki. From June 20th to August 26th I'll be improving articles, Wikidata, and photo collections on these areas, and would love some help. I'm not sure whether the person is notable. The case is certainly notable. But in either case (no pun intended), you haven't started a bio but written about the case. Maybe that's the appropriate thing to do anyway. Schwede66 05:50, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Yes, I see...oops. Same as the Bain family murders I suppose. I'm not sure how to go about changing this - abandon and start again or re-name the draft? It's yet another of these miscarriages, or alleged miscarriages, that have plagued NZ justice over the last 40 or so years. I had initially thought there might be an article on that but it is hard to see how all these separately notable cases could be bound together into one article. I see a close parallel with the article about Teina Pora. That article is also more about the case than being a biography of the subject. With regards to the proposed title, "prisoner" doesn't seem right to me. While this might be a bit unusual, perhaps Alan Hall (New Zealander) might be better - it is neutral, and more appropriate than "prisoner" for a person who has had convictions quashed after 19 years. When the entry is added to a disambiguation page for Alan Hall, there could perhaps be a phrase explaining he had convictions quashed after 19 years.Marshelec (talk) 08:24, 10 June 2022 (UTC)
Yes, it didn't sound right to me either. I'm beginning to wish I had approached this draft more slowly with a bit more thought rather than rushing into it over a quick coffee. We can move this within draft space; just need to figure out what we want to call it. "Alan Hall miscarriage of justice" would be a mouthful but describes what's been going on. BTW, there is an article termed List of miscarriage of justice cases which has a New Zealand section. That said, there's certainly enough material available to make this a standalone article. Unlike the Bain family murders, the coverage isn't really about the murder at all, so I'm not sure that this would be the right path (if it were, apparently the usual name is the "Grove Road murder" [7]). A number of sources refer to this as the "Alan Hall case" or "Alan Hall's case" ([8], [9]), which might be suitable? Furius (talk) 23:47, 10 June 2022 (UTC)

Just closing this out – I see that an article has been published at Wrongful conviction of Alan Hall. That's separate to your draft, Roger 8 Roger. See whether anything could be merged but given how detailed the mainspace article is, making we can just nuke the draft. If you'd like that to happen, please say so and I can see to that. Critter of the Week: recruiting editors

Every week on RNZ, Jesse Mulligan and Nic Toki talk about a different NZ species on Critter of the Week. I've been supporting them for 7 years, trying to create or improve Wikipedia articles for each species they talk about. But I could do with help. If you want to join Team Critter, add yourself to the project page and let me know your email address. You'll get a weekly email with the week's critter, what needs doing, and some useful links. We need editors who can do any of:

  • contact photographers and clear images for Commons
  • search for journal articles and compile bibliographies
  • write taxonomy or description sections (so anyone with some biology expertise would be welcome)
  • comb through news stories and magazine articles for conservation and culture sections
  • gardening: infobox, Commons/Wikispecies links, an image gallery, date/en-NZ formats, and a link to the radio episode.

I'm also working on userboxes and barnstars for the team. The work we do gets a regular shoutout from Jesse Mulligan, and is good PR for Wikipedia in NZ. A couple of weeks ago, Wikipedia research may have even discovered a new species of fish parasite (hear the interview here). Te Urewera roundabout

I'm trying to work out the various articles that we have on Te Urewera. There appear to be:

So, someone looking for an article on the protected area gets sent round in a circle, which is unsatisfactory, and we don't seem to actually have an article on the current protected area. I wonder whether it might make sense to turn the Te Urewera National Park into the article on the new protected area, with the old national park as part of its history section. Hmm, I think in an ideal world where the article on the National Park is significantly larger than it is we could get away with having both, but given the current state of it I think your idea of turning the National park article into one about the protected area is probably the best one, with a fair bit of detail on the NP in the history (and maybe a separate section altogether on its disestablishment?)
As an aside, I've been thinking more generally about the state of our national park articles and that we should have a concerted effort to bring them up to the level they deserve. We were talking about it a bit over at the ongoing west coast project (pinging Marshelec) and so could start pulling something together for that to help in this regard? I agree too. It was actually turned into an article about the protected area 4 years ago and remained that way until 7 weeks ago. In July 2018 Paewiki moved Te Urewera National Park to Te Urewera (protected area) as in this version. On 27 May 2022 Moonraker boldly moved it back and edited the article. I suggest reverting the recent article move and reviewing Moonraker's edits to see what should accordingly be kept or changed. Courtesy pings to @Moonraker: @Paewiki: for their info. Nurg and Marshelec Te Urewera National Park and Te Urewera (the present legal entity) are both notable topics and surely merit articles. If someone wants to merge them, we could have an AfD, but I think keeping them separate helps to make things clear. In particular, if we search “Te Urewera National Park” on Jstor or Google books we find hundreds of hits to help with the improvements Turnagra wants to see. Searches for “Te Urewera protected area” do find a few hits and seem to show that the term is used to mean the same thing as the present Te Urewera, so I have redirected it there and fixed the hatnote. We need the Te Urewera article to be greatly improved. Moonraker (talk) 14:28, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
But does the protected area cover the whole of Te Urewera? This map indicates that large parts of Te Urewera are privately owned by Tuhoe and that other parts of the hills are outside both Tuhoe ownership and the protected area: [10]. Furius (talk) 12:38, 22 July 2022 (UTC)
I had a chat with Moonraker at Talk:Te Urewera 2-3 weeks back to clarify that the protected area does not occupy all of Te Urewera, and we got on the same page with regard to that. What we still need to resolve is whether we should continue with a single combined article for the erstwhile national park and the current legal person entity (in addition to the article about the wider area) or whether we should have separate articles for the national park and the legal person entity, making 3 Urewera articles in total. I'm still in favour of the combined article, and moving it back from Te Urewera National Park to Te Urewera (protected area), but am open to hearing other arguments. The trouble is, we have three notable topics here, and it’s easy for people to confuse them. The only one of the three that has a clear meaning is Te Urewera National Park. The last merger proposal (at Talk:Te Urewera#Merger proposal) failed, and I see why. Since then, I have expanded both Te Urewera National Park and Te Urewera, in discussion with Nurg, who corrected me on the difference between Te Urewera as a legal entity and Te Urewera as a geographical area. One reason why we have confusion is that we still do not have maps showing the extent of the present protected area and the larger geographical area. My preferred solution would be to keep the pages we have and add a new one for the geographical area. I searched but could only find maps that were in copyright. Can anyone help with that? Wikimedia ESEAP Conference 2022 on November 18-20 in Sydney, Australia

The Wikimedia East, South East Asia and the Pacific also known as ESEAP will be having an in-person conference in Sydney, Australia on November 18-20. ESEAP is a regional collaborative composed of nationalities & Wikimedia affiliates of Indonesia, Taiwan, Australia, Korea, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Vietnam. Membership also include nationalities and informal communities of Brunei, Cambodia, China, Japan, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, and Timor Leste.

The goals for the conference are:

  • Strategic discussions: ESEAP Hub governance, process of moving from an informal group to more formal structure aligned with the Hubs/Minimum Criteria for Pilots
  • Partnership, Tools & Skills: Outreach and community collaboration support networks; building a network of skill sets so that communities in the region can provide extra outreach support and collaboration across the region; and
  • Leadership development through building networks that encourage new and wider diversity of participants to enable future growth

Sir Len Southward

I've started Len Southward which used to redirect to Southward Car Museum. I've got it to a decent stub with the tiny amount of information available. I went out to the museum last weekend and all the printed material they had was about the museum. I bought the DVD though! They digitised a load of stuff for their new exhibit about him, which is apparently forthcoming in a new edition of their guide book coming out soon, so that might be useful. Southward is listed in the Who's who so I shall add to the article. However, may I point out that this photo is a problem? Southward's photo would be under copyright and given that it's not de minimis, it's a copyviolation. Does anyone who's watching this page have photo-editing software that could manage to blur his face? If so, please upload a modified version and then we'll get the original deleted. Vape shops NZ section

Under the Vape shop#New Zealand section, I had created some information about vape product sales and manufacture stuff under that section. It definitely needs some expansion, but hopefully I got most of the key points there on the article. Might have neglected to elaborate further about where vape products cannot be used or sold. The health.govt.nz website gives governmental advice about the vape regulation stuff, though I wasn't sure what other sources would be reliable (there's also vapo.co.nz and nzdoctor.co.nz, but I avoided them for now). Proposal: Zuru creation and Nick Mowbray & Anna Mowbray deletion

There is no article for Zuru, but there are wikis for two of the three founders, Nick Mowbray and Anna Mowbray. I proposing that we create an article for Zuru, and merge the relevant information from Nick and Anna's pages, before deleting them. My rationale for proposing this course of action, is that beyond Zuru neither are particularly notable (aside, perhaps, from having expensive taste in property). I also think the relevant Zuru information could be incorporated well into a Zuru page, with a subheading for the founders. Hi. According to the live commentary for the NZ/South Africa cricket match taking place right now, there was a claim that Suzie Bates is the only athlete to compete at the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and the Cricket World Cup. I can certainly find sources to say she's taken part at all three, but nothing to say she's the ONLY person to have done this. Is anyone able to find something that does? That looks like a sensible structure. A few other topics that could possibly be worth covering are:
  • World Heritage listing (UNESCO)
  • Incidents (eg the explosion at Te Maari crater, or eruptions of Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, or the rock/ice fall on Aoraki / Mt Cook that took some height off the mountain). Perhaps these could just be part of "History", or be part of articles about more specific aspects of a National Park, but there might still be merit in having a separate section further down the article on this topic.
  • Controversies (eg proposals for new roads through National Parks - such as the proposed Collingwood - Karamea Road through Kahurangi National Park, or disputes over planes/helicopters in National Parks, or disputes over pest control and management etc)
  • Usage / visitor numbers and distribution - domestic/ international (although data on all of this is probably hard to get)

Agree that this looks like a good approach. I wonder if it's worth a dedicated section on conservation / management, but otherwise I feel like a lot of it will be mainly on a case-by-case basis. Comment from Page lurker - many Australian/Oz national parks articles have similar issues, and lack material of substance in the articles, and lack systematic explanation across the range of issues listed above.
Small and sometimes annoying issues include - wikidata and lead sentence identifying as national parks - but then short descriptions as 'protected areas'.
Also a set of confusions/conflations of the visitor/tourist attraction subject/category, as well as the ever encroaching galleries of photographs at the lower part of the articles. Systematic improvement of national park articles is much encouraged from across the ditch, as they are under-explored-explained as having vital resources of biota that always need more coverage...
In the oz project there is also sometimes a lack of appreciation of the potential interaction/flow of material that could occur between wikivoyage and wikipedia - content in some national park articles reads too much like a 'how to get to..', and lack any appreciation of the geography/geology/biota that is in the park...

This is a great initiative. Wikipedia:WikiProject Protected areas seems fairly dead, but it might be worth looking at their featured articles (Yellowstone National Park, Banff National Park, etc)? I think, insofar as access is a matter for WP, it's probably part of the human geography of the place. I'm not sure why popular culture is a sub-category of activities. I like the layout suggested but also agree with Turnagra that a dedicated section on conservation / management might be an option for some national parks. Of course it depends on how specific the fauna and flora sections are but if it was me editing these pages those two sections would cover more general information where as the conservation / management section could cover specific threatened species in the park, translocation efforts, predator free/invasive plants initiatives etc. - Ambrosia10 (talk) 18:57, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

This schema looks good to me. There's plenty we could do with the current print and online resources, and for many of the parks there are plenty of tourist photos online to use. I would stress that the best resources for most parks will be books, like the Andy Dennis / Craig Potton series from the '80s/'90s as opposed to DOC's sketchy website. But it also seems like this would be a good partnership proposal for DOC, who are sitting on huge amounts of photography, particularly historical photography of the development of these parks.
