WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Project assessment

Thought I'd share some thoughts on WPNZ importance assessment with you. User:Dramatic once gave the following advice on importance assessment, which I quite liked: "My rule of thumb is: Top 2–5%, High: 5–10%, Mid: 25–30%, Low: 60%" We have some 28,600 articles belonging to WPNZ that have importance assessed, and the following table compares the status quo with Dramatic's rule of thumb ranges:

Top High Mid Low sum
status quo 92 567 3,505 24,444 28,608
lower range 572 1,430 7,152 17,165 26,319
upper range 1,430 2,861 8,582 17,165 30,038

Ok, if Dramatic is right, our importance assessment is very biased towards the 'low' end. The reason I bring this up is that the other day, I looked through the list of 92 top importance articles, and quite a few that I thought should be there were not. No wonder if we are some 500 to 1,300 top importance articles short of where we should be. So, rather than starting a process of changing things around big time, I thought I'd discuss the bigger picture first to see what others think. Personally, I feel that 5% for top importance is on the high side, and I'd rather aim for the lower end of the range, but otherwise I'm quite comfortable with those suggested ranges. Ancestry.com.au's press release says their NZ Cemetary records are online. Free access to the New Zealand Cemetery Records 1800-2007, as well as all of its New Zealand online databases starts on Friday 6th February from 12.01am through to Monday 9th February at 11:59pm, at http://www.ancestry.com.au/waitangi2015. I had a look at the link and it lists Birth, Marriage and Death indexes, Electoral rolls from 1853 – 1981 and more as available. Linnah (talk) 22:17, 5 February 2015 (UTC)

Does anyone have access to the book cited as further reading on the Caroline Whitting article?

Bronwyn Dalley: "Criminal Conversations: Gender and narratives of child murder in nineteenth century New Zealand" in Caroline Dalley and Julie Montgomerie (eds) The Gendered Kiwi: Auckland: Auckland University Press: 1999.

If so, what source does it give for the spelling of her name? I'm fairly sure the spelling of her name is wrong (contemporary sources most often give Witting and sometimes Vitting - she was German so would probably have pronounced her name that way).

(And I wasted a good couple of days hunting down any information I could find through Papers Past and cemetery records, just to eventually determine that she did not form part of a project I was working on. And I can't even use most of what I did find out to flesh out the article a bit because it's the dreaded Original Research. grumble.) Daveosaurus (talk) 09:38, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

I've fixed the spelling of the editor (Daley) and you should not have any trouble finding it through Google Books. By clicking on the 'Find in a library' link on the left, you get lots of choice (and if Google knows your location, it shows your local libraries first). Regarding PapersPast, if you find information in a newspaper, I wouldn't call that OR. Schwede66 18:05, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for that. I'll try to hunt the book down the next time I'm near a library - the spelling question was more about Caroline W(h)itting's name than Daley's, but good that you picked that up as well. I mainly want to make sure there isn't a good reason for keeping the article at Caroline Whitting before moving it to Caroline Witting. The OR issue was more that the article is silent about what happened to her in later life, and there's an apparent match in the Dunedin City burial records web site (listing her has having died in Dunedin Hospital in July 1890 and buried at the Dunedin Northern cemetery). Peter Hillary

Kia ora! Not a Kiwi but one of my best friends is one, close enough? I revamped the Peter Hillary article nearly 2 yrs ago, as it was a bit of an unsourced jumble & I simply couldn't stand looking at it like that. (Yes, I *am* the local grammar police, tweaking sentences one random article at a time.) I think it might be a little better than start-class, as the template on the Talk page says, due to sourcing, rewriting, and tidying up. What say you, Kiwi Wiki-ites? If I boldly knock down that template....does another one need to go in its place? ScarletRibbons (talk) 23:01, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Counties Manukau

Hello Kiwis and friends thereof - I spend time fixing ambiguous links, and have found a few that refer to Counties Manukau. What we currently have in Counties Manukau is just a disambiguation between the rugby union and rugby league teams, without describing what Counties Manukau really means. I suggest that somebody with good knowledge of the Auckland area might start a proper article for Counties Manukau, after moving the current content to Counties Manukau (disambiguation). PKT(alk) 15:17, 20 March 2015 (UTC)

There is also Counties Manukau District Health Board and various other organisations using the term, including Counties Manukau Police District. This might be useful: A history of local government in the Manukau area. Tayste (edits) 20:39, 20 March 2015 (UTC)
"Counties Manukau" doesn't mean any one thing. The rugby union, the rugby league, the health board, the police - 4 organisations and 4 different boundaries. Some don't include Otahuhu, some don't include Papatoetoe; for some the southern extent stops short of Pokeno, for others it goes further but stops short of Meremere, for another it will go as far as Te Kauwhata. It might be best left to the articles about the individual organisations (or at least those that have an article). Nurg (talk) 09:45, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
I've had a go at explaining this in the intro, I almost linked to Manukau City, Papakura District and Franklin District but opted to instead just be vague and say it "refers to the southern area of Auckland, however there are no universally agreed boundaries." Feel free to modify further. Mattlore (talk) 20:13, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Proposal for new article category

Well done, Stuartyeates. Now that this is done, let me offer an observation and propose an amendment to our assessment categories. We have quite a few items in class NA and many of those are redirects. I don't know whether they are in fact all redirects. As of today, we also have 420 unassessed articles with NA-importance, and once again, they appear to be mostly (?) redirects. Most Wikiprojects have a class for redirects but not Wikiproject New Zealand. If we deal with redirects, I fail to see the sense in assigning importance to those. So, here's my proposal:

What do you think? Schwede66 03:52, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

Seems like a fine idea to me. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:33, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

As you may know I've been working with NLNZ to get WP:WPNZ content into DigitalNZ and thus into a number of educational contexts. A couple of weeks ago I heard back from them that:

DigitalNZ harvests articles and lists from the Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand, with a quality rating of "Start" or higher. Motor vehicles - local names

Your opinions are of (minor but significant) importance to WikiProject Automobiles.
If your personal transport is a vehicle with four or five doors that seats 4 to 6 people and has a conventional luggage boot at the back do you, in New Zealand, describe it as:

  • a car
  • a sedan
  • a saloon

It is notable that manufacturers advertising their vehicles in New Zealand describe them as sedans so what do the bulk of the population say?
Your thoughts gratefully read. Eddaido (talk) 08:09, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Personally, I think car or sedan would be used, in my understanding a sedan is a type of car. Saloon is definitely not colloquial here. Mattlore (talk) 09:18, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
Off the top of my head, I think usage varies, but in the context of road cars it is usually "sedan" for four doors and a conventional boot, and "hatchback" (not "sedan") for a five doors, where the 5th door is a rear hatch instead of a conventional boot lid. "Car" is a broader term that includes two-seaters, for example. "Saloon" or "saloon car" is used mainly in the context of motor racing, much less so for road cars. I'm not sure what would be meant by a five-door with a conventional boot - maybe you just mean a five-door hatchback. Happy to be corrected by NZ car experts. Nurg (talk) 10:59, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
I've since realised that TradeMe Cars Bikes and Boats which surely contains every used motor vehicle for sale in the country or very close to it (dealers as well) has the default classification "sedan". So I've done some research.
Before a new car goes on the road it must be inspected for compliance and there it receives its classification: convertible, saloon, sports car, station wagon, utility. (that is fresh from NZTA Palmerston North, they have no sedan option).
The matching options in Trade Me are: convertible, coupe, hatchback, sedan (in place of saloon why not car?), station wagon, RV/SUV, utility etc. There is no provision by Trade Me for sports car but a slot for other. The TradeMe descriptions in italics have no match in the official classification. Motorweb (for TradeMe) downloads the info from NZTA switching sedan for saloon which they felt was obsolete. The other classifications like coupe and SUV are used when any Trade Me member likes to improve a vehicle's description.
Accordingly a Google search shows sedan widely used (by Trade Me!) online but I think it is rarely used in ordinary speech. Am I right? Is it changing? Eddaido (talk) 03:39, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
Sedan = 4-door or 2-door that seats 4-5 people
Hatchback = 3-door or 5-door that seats 4-5 people
Saloon = sedans + hatchbacks
Car = saloons (sedans + hatchbacks) + coupes + convertibles + sports cars
Nurg (talk) 10:11, 30 July 2015 (UTC)
Slightly puzzled. So would you say "I must get in the sedan and go to the supermarket" or "I must get in the car and . . ". You are forgiven if you in fact say "I must get in my Ferrari and . . . " Eddaido (talk) 04:54, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
If buying/selling a vehicle we want to know the configuration so "sedan", "hatchback", "liftback", "station wagon", "RV", & "people mover" are terms we use to distinguish the particular type of vehicle. But we just use "car" for all of these in ordinary conversations. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 05:43, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
If I had two cars, a Honda Accord sedan and a Honda Accord coupe, I would certainly say "I must get in the sedan and go to the supermarket." Nurg (talk) 06:06, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks both, I seem to have made my point. Eddaido (talk) 07:24, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

State Highway Information

Kia ora. I'm requesting the following information from NZTA so that we can reference the State Highway articles properly:

  • the length of each highway
  • the endpoints of each highway

I'm hoping I can convince NZTA to post the data on their public website. If not, I'll post it on my website once I've received it, and we can reference it there.

Regards. Kiwi128 (talk) 01:00, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

Well, there's a lot on their website already, it's just a bit hard to find and to interpret. There's a file that reports on the lengths of the state highways by their regional breakdown. From that, you can see that their total network is 10,804 km. You get a lot of detail about individual state highways from their traffic count data. This page gives a link to the various spreadsheets and reports, and I suggest you have a look at the first spreadsheet. To understand the columns, "SH" obviously gives the state highway number, "RS" means referencing station, and "RP" stands for route position. The important thing to note is how this works. RP is always a distance from the RS, so in row one of the first spreadsheet, the first route position is 7.38 km from the referencing station at 0 km (i.e. the beginning of the state highway). It's important to note that the referencing stations might not necessarily the distance apart from one another as the numbers imply, and the second row is a good example of it, as the referencing station is at 7 km, which is of course less than the offset of the first count station (i.e. 7.39 km). Anyway, those values aren't massively out, and as you can see, the highest referencing station is at 79 km, and the route position of the last count site is a further 13 km away. The description column tells you where that count location is, and you can check on Google Maps how far away that is from the end of that particular state highway. That way, you have at least an idea of the length of that particular state highway.
As you can see, this doesn't give you all the answers. But it would be useful to reference that spreadsheet as it gives you traffic count data, and that should be part of every article. If you've got questions how to interpret the data, please ask. Schwede66 05:27, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

I think there should be a category for these once very-important (to Aus NZ) people (mostly individuals or partnerships until c. 1914) and companies but I'm a bit leery of offending anyone. Should I go ahead? Eddaido (talk) 01:23, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

S P Andrew photographer

A well-known Wellington photographer, S P Andrew, died just over 50 years ago so his work should be free of copyright restrictions. However shortly before that anniversary the National Library seems to have gone through and changed the attribution on his (and his staff's) work to S P Andrew Limited. Does this make a difference to the copyright status of work signed on the print S P Andrew? Do I just use one of the photos and see what happens? (Half serious there). Eddaido (talk) 00:56, 20 August 2015 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the deal is there. The Nat. Lib clearly want people to pay for the images, but whether they can legitimately do so is something I can't answer. I'd recommend asking someone at Commons, Commons:Village pump/Copyright would be the place to do that. -- Shudde talk 04:00, 20 August 2015 (UTC)
The ownership of the copyright isn't effected by it's duration. NLNZ is legally permitted to charge what they like for copies. Stuartyeates (talk) 00:31, 8 September 2015 (UTC)

Experienced editor please check this

Hi all. There's a dynamic IP removing content from Same-sex marriage in New Zealand, claiming it's not relevant. I think it is relevant (demonstrating that something that was threatened, didn't happen) but the IP differs. I've commented on the talk page but the IP hasn't (yet, as of last check). I'd appreciate if an editor with a better understanding of Wikipedia than myself could give a third opinion on the content's relevance. Thanks for your time. Arena Manawatu

Hi, I live in Palmy North and have a bit of an issue with Arena Manawatu. If you haven't heard all ready FMG chose not to renew the Sponsorship deal. I feel we need to update the image as FMG don't have rights to be showen now?. If you can take a look at the page and help fix it up maybe? I have fixed quite a bit up but there's always mistakes left behind. Sirpottingmix (talk) 09:44, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Go around to the arena, take a nice current photo, and upload it here. Problem solved. Moriori (talk) 20:31, 24 September 2015 (UTC)

Should we remove the image? Sirpottingmix (talk) 04:58, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

No, but once you (or somebody else) has uploaded a new image, we can replace it. Schwede66 06:40, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Move request

I've put up a move request for Georgina Earl (and for her sister) and that hasn't as yet attracted any comment. The problem, I suspect, is that when you see the name flash up in the article alerts, you probably all think "I don't know her". But I guarantee that you do know who she (or her sister) is, so go and have a look and say whether or not you support the proposal. Schwede66 17:21, 30 September 2015 (UTC)

Help me Please - I need some to correct my formatting for my wikipedia page - Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club

I really to get some help with this page Burnside_West_Christchurch_University_Cricket_Club its a very important club both due the fact it has important historic people and community involvement and it impact on the community.

Much of the information content is available however, I have no experience with the wiki layout or requirements, please help me--Shaneyoung72 (talk) 07:32, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

Developing article on Caroline Freeman (by a new contributor)

Hi, this is my first session editing wiki articles and I came across the article on Caroline Freeman (Otago's first woman graduate) which seemed pretty skimpy and had several comments at the top about it being too short/lacking citations etc. I've added some more information to it tonight. I'm struggling though to find out how to add a biography box to the right hand side of the page, and to add subheadings to divide up the information. Could someone please direct me to the right section for newbies like me to learn these things? Many thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MurielMary (talkcontribs) 10:54, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Look through the edit history of the article and you'll see a few tweaks from which you can learn. Schwede66 18:17, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

Increasing entries on NZ women/women's organisations

Kia ora koutou, I'm a very new contributor so please excuse any etiquette errors here! I'm interested to know if there are other people interested in working on increasing the number and quality of articles on NZ women and women's organisations, which are my particular area of interest and expertise. At the moment I'm working with some of my university undergrad and postgrad study materials to identify appropriate subjects to add - there seems to be a lot! Quite a few people I would consider "notable" don't appear on wikipedia at all, such as Beatrice Beeby and a large number of pioneer women. Also, I'm not sure how to communicate with other users, but I'd like to thank gadfium and Schwede in particular for improving articles I've worked on this weekend. Cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by MurielMary (talkcontribs) 18:46, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi @MurielMary: - welcome! I'm more than happy to help out - let me know what you need help with. I know someone who has done research into Vice-Regal wives in NZ, and that's one area where I would like to see more articles :-) Ballofstring (talk) 21:53, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Ballofstring: - that sounds great! What state is the research into Vice-Regal wives in - I mean is it online, in word documents, or handwritten/printed copy only? I'd be happy to work on getting that into articles. MurielMary (talk) 01:22, 26 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary

Great! It will be online in the next month (awaiting submission to the university library). It's mostly about the position rather than the people, but I'm sure it will be useful. I'll post something when it's available :-) Ballofstring (talk) 05:45, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Kia ora @MurielMary:. Three editors based at The Dowse Art Museum have been working on articles about New Zealand craft and fine artists, and had a really strong emphasis on women, including running a Art + Feminism Wikipedia-a-thon earlier this year. Let me know if there's anything I can help with or, if you're Wellington based, you'd like to catch up in person.Auchmill (talk) 02:41, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Auchmill:. Actually it was hearing about the edit-a-thon at The Dowse earlier in the year that inspired me to sign up and get started on Wikipedia myself! Unfortunately I'm not in Wgton and couldn't go. I'd like to know more about organising an edit-a-thon though, I think I'd be up for doing that here in Otautahi/Christchurch. Also I'm wondering about how to categorise (or even whether it's important to categorise) the bios of NZ women that I'm working on at the moment. Is the category "New Zealand women" a useful one to use, or is there one for "NZ women in history" that would be more suitable?? What do others think? MurielMary (talk) 06:12, 27 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary

Every page should have at least one category, "New Zealand women" will always be a good start for each page. Good luck! Mattlore (talk) 06:43, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
@MurielMary: Hey, that's great! Happy to provide some advice on a edit-a-thon once you've got your momentum & maybe some other locals helpers. As for categories - [User talk:gadfium|gadfium]] will give you much better guidance than me. Personally, I like to avoid any "women" category when I wouldn't use a "man" one, but then sometimes for the sake of building up the story I guess it's necessary. Auchmill (talk) 08:12, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Actually, Category:New Zealand women is intended as a container for other categories and not a place for articles. There are a number of categories which should be included in it, such as Category:New Zealand suffragists, and Category:New Zealand feminists (let's not get into whether men can be categorised as feminists - our category system is not perfect but it mostly works). Articles should be added to these subcategories. There are going to be some articles which are difficult to fit in this system, for example Caroline Freeman - perhaps Category:New Zealand women pioneers needs to be created.-gadfium 07:44, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, gadfium, that's helpful. Just to be sure I'm on the right track, so, bios on individual women shouldn't be tagged as "category NZ women"?? There should be a sub-category inside that, which suits them? NZ suffragists and NZ feminists are useful categories, and I'll use those. I was thinking a category "NZ women in history" might be helpful as that would cover anyone from settlement to mid-20th century. Or is that too broad? Should there be "NZ women pioneers" as you suggest then "20th century NZ women" as a separate category? Another possibility is "pre-20th century NZ women" which would encompass Maori as well as Pakeha? MurielMary (talk) 08:01, 27 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary
Hmm, the guideline Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality discourages categorisation by gender except where gender is directly relevant to notability. "20th century NZ women" might not be appropriate according to this. I'd like to see more opinions on this. I often model new categories on the hierarchies of other larger countries, eg Australia, and I note that Category:Australian feminists is not in Category:Australian women (and there is a man included in the category).-gadfium 08:15, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Yes I also checked articles for some American women e.g. Susan B Anthony. She is categorised in American Feminists and American Suffragists but there's no category for American women/American women in history. MurielMary (talk) 08:22, 27 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary
@Good Olfactory: as an editor with extensive knowledge of our categorisation system, and an understanding of NZ culture, your comments on categorisation of NZ women would be appreciated.-gadfium 17:56, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the invite—good discussion. I think that a category for "New Zealand women in history" would probably be too broad. Recently, there have been several categories with the "people in history" name, such as Category:People in English history, that have been deleted, since all people are part of history. There also has not been a general movement to categorize women by a nationality/century combination. From what I understand, the categorization of women by nationality is generally broken down solely by occupation or activity—suffragists, activists, feminists, sportswomen, female singers, actresses, and so forth. I'm not sure if this is relevant to the articles that are being considered, but there is a Category:Settlers of New Zealand—perhaps a subdivision could be created for women settlers. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:01, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi @Good Olfactory: thanks for those points. I have been adding my articles on women settlers to the category Category:19th-century New Zealand people however I now see that there are sub-categories in there, such as Category:Settlers of New Zealand. To clarify, should articles be placed into subcategories only and not into categories? Are categories generally for holding subcategories only, not articles? Thanks! @Gadfium: what do you think? MurielMary (talk) 08:25, 31 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary
In general, articles go in the most specific subcategories. However, unless a category is specifically marked as being a container category, there's no problem with you adding articles to it, and other editors can move the articles deeper in the tree if they consider that a better match.-gadfium 17:58, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
  • I've just created Draft:New Zealand women's organisations, which people are welcome to contribute to (I'm sure I've missed some). In the past I've done lots of short bios from the DNZB, including many women as well as articles such as Erenora Puketapu-Hetet and Te Atairangikaahu. I'm keen to work on projects in this area (with the exception of sportspeople; everyone has their kryptonite). I've also got a contact who has suggested she might have some lists of people who're candidates for inclusion, I'll follow up via twitter. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:25, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
@MurielMary:, @Auchmill:, @Ballofstring:, @Gadfium:: I've added a whole lot of candidates of new articles. Many of these articles have been through many names, some of which are similar to foreign names so some care is required. If people know of good sources for this orgs, feel free to add them as references to the list if you're not brave enough to start a new article or draft. Stuartyeates (talk)
Great list, Stuartyeates!! I wonder what to do with all the parenting/motherhood organisations though, like La Leche, Parents Centre, Home Birth Association - can we make a section for "Mothering"/"Parenting" as this is distinct from "Health"? I have Anne Else's book "Women Together" in front of me, great resource in this area, do you have a copy? MurielMary (talk) 09:48, 27 October 2015 (UTC)MurielMary
I'm not fussed with the organisation, please feel free to rearrange as you feel free. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:50, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
I've added some more orgs. I'm not 100% sure that all of them are notable (= have secondary sources to support a wikipedia article), but most appear to have. For secondary sources search http://innz.natlib.govt.nz/ http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/ etc. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:56, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I've just undone some additions to and removals from this article, but may have missed something or included something that should stay removed. Could someone else please take a look? Thanks Matt (Talk) 03:46, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Removal of Category:New Zealand women doctors

Kia ora koutou, I would like to identify and remove categories which separate women from the "main" category as this only perpetuates the idea of "male" = "main", and "female" = "other". For example, there is a category "New Zealand doctors" and another one "New Zealand women doctors". I'd like to move the 4 articles in the "NZ women doctors" category into "New Zealand doctors" and then delete the women's category. This is in line with the advice from the Wikipedia Gender Gap Task Force around categorisation of women. Thoughts? MurielMary (talk) 10:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

That makes sense. However, there is a rather formal process how to propose changes to existing categories; please follow the instructions here. When done, feel free to leave another note here, but it will also appear in the article alerts on the top of this page. Once a category change has been agreed to, it will be done automatically by a bot; no need to do anything manually. In fact, you shouldn't do this manually, but put the categories up for discussion as per the given process. Schwede66 18:01, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
@MurielMary: I believe that this effort is based on a misunderstanding of how categorisation is meant to work. Please read Wikipedia:Categorization#Non-diffusing_subcategories and confirm that this doesn't already handle the issue you see (if it doesn't, please have another go at articulating the exact issue). Note that every member of Category:New Zealand women medical doctors should be in Category:New Zealand medical doctors. I'll fix this immediately. Didn't need fixing, already members. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:33, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
Taking a second look at this hierarchy, I've created Category:New Zealand Māori woman medical doctors as the intersection of Category:New Zealand women medical doctors and Category:New Zealand Māori medical doctors . Stuartyeates (talk) 19:15, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
  • Thanks Stuart for looking into this. I find the categorisation system very confusing, TBH! So is the "women doctors" category supposed to be a subset of the "doctors" category? Also, re the new category for Maori women, can you correct the typo "woman" to "women". Thanks again for looking at this. MurielMary (talk) 09:02, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Deletion of Todd Corporation article

Can someone please explain why the Todd Corporation article has been deleted? This is a notable subject, relevant to many topics. Pakaraki (talk) 17:41, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

The article wasn't deleted. It was moved to draft by @Slick1nz:, who can presumably speak to why they did that. The move left a redirect, which was then deleted (because it was a cross-namespace redirect from mainspace). Stuartyeates (talk) 19:45, 9 November 2015 (UTC)
Yes, it would indeed be interesting to hear the reasons behind this move to draft. Schwede66 19:55, 9 November 2015 (UTC)

First New Zealand-born Member of Parliament

Was John Sheehan (politician) or Arthur Rhodes (politician)) the first New Zealand-born Member of the New Zealand Parliament? Rick570 (talk) 03:32, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Obviously, the Rhodes-claim (which comes from his Northern Advocate obituary) is wrong, given that Sheehan became an MP 15 years earlier. Schwede66 04:10, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much. Arthur Rhodes seems to be of interest to you. - so no doubt you will be interested to edit it appropriately. Regards.Rick570 (talk) 04:15, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Stupid question time: what was John S.'s last name? 'Sheehan' becomes 'Sheen' about half way through the article, and stays that way. I'd fix it myself except I can't be certain that 'Sheehan' is in fact right (expletive deleted 19th-century names in records...) Daveosaurus (talk) 04:32, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
If you're having difficulty reading the records, that suggests to me that you might be using old primary sources. Wikipedia policy is to use the name as used in modern reliable sources (ideally modern reliable sources that use macrons). Stuartyeates (talk) 04:54, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
I don't have sources available at all: it was partly my reason for not just fixing it myself, and partly a general growl about the state of 19th-century spelling (I do a bit of non-wiki-related research in order to ensure that name spellings are correct and getting accurate spellings of people's names - particularly people who the newspapers of the day felt beneath their notice - is very frustrating). Daveosaurus (talk) 05:07, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
The first four Māori MPs were elected to Parliament in 1868, before Sheehan's election in 1872. Paora (talk) 05:37, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Excellent point. Would it be more accurate to describe Shee(ha)n as the first "New Zealand-born European"? Daveosaurus (talk) 05:52, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
"... "first New Zealand-born politician elected by a non-Māori electorate."? Stuartyeates (talk) 06:51, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
The latter is more appropriate, as Frederick Nene Russell, elected for Northern Maori in 1868 had a Pākehā father and a Māori mother. Thus, Russell would seem to be the first MP of European descent born in New Zealand. Paora (talk) 23:16, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Well then are the following statements correct?

" John Sheehan (5 July 1844 – 12 June 1885) was a 19th-century New Zealand politician. He was the first New Zealand-born politician elected by a non-Māori electorate and he was the first New Zealand-born person to hold cabinet rank."Rick570 (talk) 00:11, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Maybe replace "non-Maori electorate" with "European electorate" or "general electorate"? Schwede66 01:20, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much.Rick570 (talk) 03:08, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
I've fixed the Arthur Rhodes page. Rather than just deleting the wrong claim, I opted to record that this was reported in some obituaries, but that it was an incorrect claim. Otherwise, another editor may stumble across this wrong claim at some point in the future and puts it back. It appears that The New Zealand Herald got this wrong, as they had an obituary from their own Christchurch correspondent, and they were the first a day after his death to state that he was the first New Zealand-born MP; other newspapers would have picked this up from the Herald reporting. That's original research, though, and as such, I haven't added those details. Schwede66 04:31, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Proposed primary topic for Southern Alps: New Zealand

I have proposed that the primary topic for the disambiguation page Southern Alps is Southern Alps (New Zealand): the latter should move to the former. Feel free to join in the discussion at Talk:Southern Alps (New Zealand)#Requested move 29 November 2015. Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 20:27, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

I think it is quite wrong for the name to have been changed from Southern Alps to Southern Alps (New Zealand). I think OCpro imagines this to be a geographic description rather than a name . . . why not Alps (Europe)? I see Hagley Park (Christchurch) has recently lost its (Christchurch) and is now Hagley Park. Quite Right Too. Eddaido (talk) 22:39, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
For the record, Hagley Park was disambiguated for a couple of days only before somebody else came along and reverted this undiscussed move. The same should have happened with Southern Alps, in my opinion, and if we then have a move discussion with Southern Alps as the primary topic, that's fine. 02:18, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Waikato categories

Hi all - just been having a look at the subcategories of Category:Waikato, and wonder whether some of them need renaming. Though it makes sense for the main category to simply be called "Waikato", things like Category:History of Waikato‎ sound wrong to my kiwified ears... surely "History of the Waikato" is a more natural NZ-standard name for such a category? The same with Category:Buildings and structures in Waikato, Category:Education in Waikato, Category:Environment of Waikato, Category:Geography of Waikato, Category:NZHPT register in Waikato, Category:People from Waikato, Category:Politics of Waikato, Category:Sport in Waikato, Category:Transport in Waikato, and Category:Visitor attractions in Waikato, plus about 15 sub-subcategories. Oddly, we already have Category:Rugby league in the Waikato. I thought I'd see what people think here before considering a mass-CFR, especially since I realise "The Waikato" could become confused with the river in some cases. Any thoughts? Grutness...wha? 00:17, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

I would support the change (I started the rugby league category) but it seems the we might slowly become the minority. Would be keen to hear others opinions. Mattlore (talk) 01:34, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

This is smaller than the Waikato regional council area, which extends to the King Country, Taupō, Hauraki and the Coromandel Peninsula, and parts of Rotorua district." - http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/waikato-region/page-1. The article named "Waikato" is about the Waikato regional council area, not about the smaller area described by that Te Ara page, which has long been called "the Waikato", but which that Te Ara page calls "Waikato", without a "the". In my view there should be an article about the smaller area, named "Waikato", and the current article about the Waikato regional council area should be renamed Waikato (regional council area) or something like that. As those categories apply to the Waikato regional council area, they should not be renamed to "... the Waikato". Nurg (talk) 05:37, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Flags changed to Lockwood

Somebody has changed the small NZ flag to a lockwood design and it is showing up on a lot of articles. Not sure exactly where this was done but the template that seems to use it is here: Template:Country_data_New_Zealand — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.234.55.218 (talk) 20:23, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

I've also noticed that. Now it will be funny if that doesn't win the vote Matt294069 is coming 23:06, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

As far as I can tell, it has been reverted on wikicommons and will just take a while to filter through. Mattlore (talk) 01:26, 7 December 2015 (UTC)

Outdated links at WikiProject New Zealand: Tools

At Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand#Tools there are old links to Reflinks, Checklinks and Dab solver. The orig pages have gone and the links now go to pages that suggest redirects. These 3 links and the preceding toolserver link do not appear to be NZ-specific, so I suggest we just delete the "Tools" subsection. But does anyone think it worth updating the links and want to do it? Nurg (talk) 08:49, 9 December 2015 (UTC)

Outreach

An inspirational piece of outreach at User:StellaMcQ/Wikipedia for Freshwater Scientists. @StellaMcQ: and @Giantflightlessbirds:, you've done a great job.-gadfium 22:11, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Awesome! If any freshwater scientists want a helping hand while starting to edit WP, there'll be lots of others (myself included) willing to help. Schwede66 22:24, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
Thanks folks. @StellaMcQ: did all the hard work. There was definitely interest expressed after the talk, so hopefully we can harness that. I was just chatting on Twitter about running a NZ species edit-a-thon at Te Papa in April; will post more here if and when we sort something out. Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 04:58, 12 December 2015 (UTC)
Thank you! I certainly had a lot of people come up to me after to say how much they enjoyed it and that they felt inspired to give it a go or suggest to their institutions focus on that instead of updating the species pages on their own web pages. StellaMcQ (talk) 05:23, 12 December 2015 (UTC)

Could someone please review 'Allie Eagle' for me

Kia ora koutou - could someone please review the page Allie Eagle I've recently created? The page was tagged as requiring a re-write of the lede (which I've done) and further verification (which I don't think is necessary - the page could certainly be extended but the citations are, I think, adequate). I wouldn't usually ask, but the user who reviewed the page User:D'SuperHero has since deleted their account and seems to be involved in a sock puppet dispute, and I wonder if the page attracted their interest because the topics discussed involve abortion rights and Christianity Auchmill (talk) 20:58, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

The article is fine as is. Good work. Schwede66 21:28, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
