Project assessment
Thought I'd share some thoughts on WPNZ importance assessment with you. User:Dramatic once gave the following advice on importance assessment, which I quite liked: "My rule of thumb is: Top 2–5%, High: 5–10%, Mid: 25–30%, Low: 60%" We have some 28,600 articles belonging to WPNZ that have importance assessed, and the following table compares the status quo with Dramatic's rule of thumb ranges:

Ok, if Dramatic is right, our importance assessment is very biased towards the 'low' end. The reason I bring this up is that the other day, I looked through the list of 92 top importance articles, and quite a few that I thought should be there were not. No wonder if we are some 500 to 1,300 top importance articles short of where we should be. So, rather than starting a process of changing things around big time, I thought I'd discuss the bigger picture first to see what others think. Personally, I feel that 5% for top importance is on the high side, and I'd rather aim for the lower end of the range, but otherwise I'm quite comfortable with those suggested ranges. Free access to Ancestry.com.au's NZ online databases 6-9 Feb 2015
Ancestry.com.au's press release says their NZ Cemetary records are online. Free access to the New Zealand Cemetery Records 1800-2007, as well as all of its New Zealand online databases starts on Friday 6th February from 12.01am through to Monday 9th February at 11:59pm, at http://www.ancestry.com.au/waitangi2015. Does anyone have access to the book cited as further reading on the Caroline Whitting article?
Bronwyn Dalley: "Criminal Conversations: Gender and narratives of child murder in nineteenth century New Zealand" in Caroline Dalley and Julie Montgomerie (eds) The Gendered Kiwi: Auckland: Auckland University Press: 1999.
If so, what source does it give for the spelling of her name? I'm fairly sure the spelling of her name is wrong (contemporary sources most often give Witting and sometimes Vitting - she was German so would probably have pronounced her name that way).
(And I wasted a good couple of days hunting down any information I could find through Papers Past and cemetery records, just to eventually determine that she did not form part of a project I was working on. And I can't even use most of what I did find out to flesh out the article a bit because it's the dreaded Original Research. grumble.) Daveosaurus (talk) 09:38, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
- I've fixed the spelling of the editor (Daley) and you should not have any trouble finding it through Google Books. By clicking on the 'Find in a library' link on the left, you get lots of choice (and if Google knows your location, it shows your local libraries first). - Thanks for that. I'll try to hunt the book down the next time I'm near a library - the spelling question was more about Caroline W(h)itting's name than Daley's, but good that you picked that up as well. I mainly want to make sure there isn't a good reason for keeping the article at Caroline Whitting before moving it to Caroline Witting. The OR issue was more that the article is silent about what happened to her in later life, and there's an apparent match in the Dunedin City burial records web site (listing her has having died in Dunedin Hospital in July 1890 and buried at the Dunedin Northern cemetery). Peter Hillary
Kia ora! Not a Kiwi but one of my best friends is one, close enough? I revamped the Peter Hillary article nearly 2 yrs ago, as it was a bit of an unsourced jumble & I simply couldn't stand looking at it like that. (Yes, I *am* the local grammar police, tweaking sentences one random article at a time.) I think it might be a little better than start-class, as the template on the Talk page says, due to sourcing, rewriting, and tidying up. What say you, Kiwi Wiki-ites? Counties Manukau
Hello Kiwis and friends thereof - I spend time fixing ambiguous links, and have found a few that refer to Counties Manukau. What we currently have in Counties Manukau is just a disambiguation between the rugby union and rugby league teams, without describing what Counties Manukau really means. I suggest that somebody with good knowledge of the Auckland area might start a proper article for Counties Manukau, after moving the current content to Counties Manukau (disambiguation). Some don't include Otahuhu, some don't include Papatoetoe; for some the southern extent stops short of Pokeno, for others it goes further but stops short of Meremere, for another it will go as far as Te Kauwhata. Minister responsible for Serious Fraud Office (New Zealand)?
Hi, i translated the article mentioned above into german language, bu i am not quite sure if it is in the responsibility of Attorney General as said here or of the police minster as shown here. Proposal for new article category
Well done, Stuartyeates. Now that this is done, let me offer an observation and propose an amendment to our assessment categories. We have quite a few items in class NA and many of those are redirects. I don't know whether they are in fact all redirects. As of today, we also have 420 unassessed articles with NA-importance, and once again, they appear to be mostly (?) redirects. Most Wikiprojects have a class for redirects but not Wikiproject New Zealand. If we deal with redirects, I fail to see the sense in assigning importance to those. So, here's my proposal:
- create a Category:Redirect-Class New Zealand articles
- set it up so that importance is set as Category:NA-importance New Zealand articles
- once done, have a bot go through New Zealand redirects and change the class accordingly.

DigitalNZ and Wikiproject New Zealand
As you may know I've been working with NLNZ to get WP:WPNZ content into DigitalNZ and thus into a number of educational contexts. A couple of weeks ago I heard back from them that:
- DigitalNZ harvests articles and lists from the Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand, with a quality rating of "Start" or higher. Information about the quality ratings and how to get a page recognised under the projects scope can be found on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand.

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project
A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Anglican articles needed
Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary (probably with a redirect from Taranaki Cathedral is the only one of NZ's 8 Anglican Cathedrals without an article. There is also no article for Philip Richardson (bishop) - something of an oversight given that he is now Archbishop. In addition, the Article on Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia contradicts itself over leadership. I'm declaring COI on all these as I work for Taranaki Cathedral and am writing this from work :-) dramatic (talk) 00:05, 8 July 2015 (UTC)

Motor vehicles - local names
Your opinions are of (minor but significant) importance to WikiProject Automobiles.
If your personal transport is a vehicle with four or five doors that seats 4 to 6 people and has a conventional luggage boot at the back do you, in New Zealand, describe it as:
- a car
- a sedan
- a saloon
It is notable that manufacturers advertising their vehicles in New Zealand describe them as sedans so what do the bulk of the population say?

- Personally, I think car or sedan would be used, in my understanding a sedan is a type of car. Saloon is definitely not colloquial here. Mattlore (talk) 09:18, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
- Off the top of my head, I think usage varies, but in the context of road cars it is usually "sedan" for four doors and a conventional boot, and "hatchback" (not "sedan") for a five doors, where the 5th door is a rear hatch instead of a conventional boot lid. "Car" is a broader term that includes two-seaters, for example. "Saloon" or "saloon car" is used mainly in the context of motor racing, much less so for road cars. - I've since realised that TradeMe Cars Bikes and Boats which surely contains every used motor vehicle for sale in the country or very close to it (dealers as well) has the default classification "sedan". So I've done some research.
Before a new car goes on the road it must be inspected for compliance and there it receives its classification: convertible, saloon, sports car, station wagon, utility. (that is fresh from NZTA Palmerston North, they have no sedan option).
The matching options in Trade Me are: convertible, coupe, hatchback, sedan (in place of saloon why not car?), station wagon, RV/SUV, utility etc. There is no provision by Trade Me for sports car but a slot for other. The TradeMe descriptions in italics have no match in the official classification. Motorweb (for TradeMe) downloads the info from NZTA switching sedan for saloon which they felt was obsolete. The other classifications like coupe and SUV are used when any Trade Me member likes to improve a vehicle's description.
Accordingly a Google search shows sedan widely used (by Trade Me!) online but I think it is rarely used in ordinary speech. Am I right? Is it changing? Eddaido (talk) 03:39, 30 July 2015 (UTC)

- Off the top of my head, I think usage varies, but in the context of road cars it is usually "sedan" for four doors and a conventional boot, and "hatchback" (not "sedan") for a five doors, where the 5th door is a rear hatch instead of a conventional boot lid. "Car" is a broader term that includes two-seaters, for example. "Saloon" or "saloon car" is used mainly in the context of motor racing, much less so for road cars. - If buying/selling a vehicle we want to know the configuration so "sedan", "hatchback", "liftback", "station wagon", "RV", & "people mover" are terms we use to distinguish the particular type of vehicle. State Highway Information
Kia ora. I'm requesting the following information from NZTA so that we can reference the State Highway articles properly:
- the length of each highway
- the endpoints of each highway

- Well, there's a lot on their website already, it's just a bit hard to find and to interpret. There's a file that reports on the lengths of the state highways by their regional breakdown. From that, you can see that their total network is 10,804 km. You get a lot of detail about individual state highways from their traffic count data. This page gives a link to the various spreadsheets and reports, and I suggest you have a look at the first spreadsheet. To understand the columns, "SH" obviously gives the state highway number, "RS" means referencing station, and "RP" stands for route position. The important thing to note is how this works. RP is always a distance from the RS, so in row one of the first spreadsheet, the first route position is 7.38 km from the referencing station at 0 km (i.e. the beginning of the state highway). It's important to note that the referencing stations might not necessarily the distance apart from one another as the numbers imply, and the second row is a good example of it, as the referencing station is at 7 km, which is of course less than the offset of the first count station (i.e. 7.39 km). Anyway, those values aren't massively out, and as you can see, the highest referencing station is at 79 km, and the route position of the last count site is a further 13 km away. The description column tells you where that count location is, and you can check on Google Maps how far away that is from the end of that particular state highway. That way, you have at least an idea of the length of that particular state highway.
- As you can see, this doesn't give you all the answers. But it would be useful to reference that spreadsheet as it gives you traffic count data, and that should be part of every article. If you've got questions how to interpret the data, please ask. Schwede66 05:27, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

S P Andrew photographer
A well-known Wellington photographer, S P Andrew, died just over 50 years ago so his work should be free of copyright restrictions. However shortly before that anniversary the National Library seems to have gone through and changed the attribution on his (and his staff's) work to S P Andrew Limited. Does this make a difference to the copyright status of work signed on the print S P Andrew? Do I just use one of the photos and see what happens? (Half serious there). Arena Manawatu
Hi, I live in Palmy North and have a bit of an issue with Arena Manawatu. If you haven't heard all ready FMG chose not to renew the Sponsorship deal. Hi, this is my first session editing wiki articles and I came across the article on Caroline Freeman (Otago's first woman graduate) which seemed pretty skimpy and had several comments at the top about it being too short/lacking citations etc. I've added some more information to it tonight. I'm struggling though to find out how to add a biography box to the right hand side of the page, and to add subheadings to divide up the information. Could someone please direct me to the right section for newbies like me to learn these things? Increasing entries on NZ women/women's organisations
Kia ora koutou, I'm a very new contributor so please excuse any etiquette errors here! I'm interested to know if there are other people interested in working on increasing the number and quality of articles on NZ women and women's organisations, which are my particular area of interest and expertise. At the moment I'm working with some of my university undergrad and postgrad study materials to identify appropriate subjects to add - there seems to be a lot! Quite a few people I would consider "notable" don't appear on wikipedia at all, such as Beatrice Beeby and a large number of pioneer women. Also, I'm not sure how to communicate with other users, but I'd like to thank gadfium and Schwede in particular for improving articles I've worked on this weekend. - Actually, Category:New Zealand women is intended as a container for other categories and not a place for articles. There are a number of categories which should be included in it, such as Category:New Zealand suffragists, and Category:New Zealand feminists (let's not get into whether men can be categorised as feminists - our category system is not perfect but it mostly works). Articles should be added to these subcategories. There are going to be some articles which are difficult to fit in this system, for example Caroline Freeman - perhaps Category:New Zealand women pioneers needs to be created.-gadfium 07:44, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks, gadfium, that's helpful. Just to be sure I'm on the right track, so, bios on individual women shouldn't be tagged as "category NZ women"?? There should be a sub-category inside that, which suits them? NZ suffragists and NZ feminists are useful categories, and I'll use those. I was thinking a category "NZ women in history" might be helpful as that would cover anyone from settlement to mid-20th century. Or is that too broad? Should there be "NZ women pioneers" as you suggest then "20th century NZ women" as a separate category? - Hmm, the guideline Wikipedia:Categorization/Ethnicity, gender, religion and sexuality discourages categorisation by gender except where gender is directly relevant to notability. "20th century NZ women" might not be appropriate according to this. I'd like to see more opinions on this. I often model new categories on the hierarchies of other larger countries, eg Australia, and I note that Category:Australian feminists is not in Category:Australian women (and there is a man included in the category).-gadfium 08:15, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Recently, there have been several categories with the "people in history" name, such as Category:People in English history, that have been deleted, since all people are part of history. There also has not been a general movement to categorize women by a nationality/century combination. From what I understand, the categorization of women by nationality is generally broken down solely by occupation or activity—suffragists, activists, feminists, sportswomen, female singers, actresses, and so forth. I'm not sure if this is relevant to the articles that are being considered, but there is a Category:Settlers of New Zealand—perhaps a subdivision could be created for women settlers. - In general, articles go in the most specific subcategories. However, unless a category is specifically marked as being a container category, there's no problem with you adding articles to it, and other editors can move the articles deeper in the tree if they consider that a better match.-gadfium 17:58, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

In the past I've done lots of short bios from the DNZB, including many women as well as articles such as Erenora Puketapu-Hetet and Te Atairangikaahu. I'm keen to work on projects in this area (with the exception of sportspeople; everyone has their kryptonite). Removal of Category:New Zealand women doctors
Kia ora koutou, I would like to identify and remove categories which separate women from the "main" category as this only perpetuates the idea of "male" = "main", and "female" = "other". For example, there is a category "New Zealand doctors" and another one "New Zealand women doctors". I'd like to move the 4 articles in the "NZ women doctors" category into "New Zealand doctors" and then delete the women's category. This is in line with the advice from the Wikipedia Gender Gap Task Force around categorisation of women. Thoughts? MurielMary (talk) 10:43, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
- That makes sense. However, there is a rather formal process how to propose changes to existing categories; please follow the instructions here. When done, feel free to leave another note here, but it will also appear in the article alerts on the top of this page. Once a category change has been agreed to, it will be done automatically by a bot; no need to do anything manually. - @MurielMary: I believe that this effort is based on a misunderstanding of how categorisation is meant to work. Please read Wikipedia:Categorization#Non-diffusing_subcategories and confirm that this doesn't already handle the issue you see (if it doesn't, please have another go at articulating the exact issue). Note that every member of Category:New Zealand women medical doctors should be in Category:New Zealand medical doctors.

- I don't have sources available at all: it was partly my reason for not just fixing it myself, and partly a general growl about the state of 19th-century spelling (I do a bit of non-wiki-related research in order to ensure that name spellings are correct and getting accurate spellings of people's names - particularly people who the newspapers of the day felt beneath their notice - is very frustrating). - The latter is more appropriate, as Frederick Nene Russell, elected for Northern Maori in 1868 had a Pākehā father and a Māori mother. Thus, Russell would seem to be the first MP of European descent born in New Zealand. Paora (talk) 23:16, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

- I've fixed the Arthur Rhodes page. Rather than just deleting the wrong claim, I opted to record that this was reported in some obituaries, but that it was an incorrect claim. Otherwise, another editor may stumble across this wrong claim at some point in the future and puts it back. It appears that The New Zealand Herald got this wrong, as they had an obituary from their own Christchurch correspondent, and they were the first a day after his death to state that he was the first New Zealand-born MP; other newspapers would have picked this up from the Herald reporting. That's original research, though, and as such, I haven't added those details. Schwede66 04:31, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
Wikipedia Editathon at Wellington Rape Crisis
I suggested to the organisers that they post this event here but it seems they haven't - Sunday 29 November 11am to 2pm WRC is holding an editathon around articles/topics of feminist and grassroots interest, including "Feminism in NZ" and starting a page for WRC. - I think it is quite wrong for the name to have been changed from Southern Alps to Southern Alps (New Zealand). I think OCpro imagines this to be a geographic description rather than a name . . . why not Alps (Europe)? I see Hagley Park (Christchurch) has recently lost its (Christchurch) and is now Hagley Park. Quite Right Too. Eddaido (talk) 22:39, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
- For the record, Hagley Park was disambiguated for a couple of days only before somebody else came along and reverted this undiscussed move. The same should have happened with Southern Alps, in my opinion, and if we then have a move discussion with Southern Alps as the primary topic, that's fine. 02:18, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Waikato categories
Hi all - just been having a look at the subcategories of Category:Waikato, and wonder whether some of them need renaming. Though it makes sense for the main category to simply be called "Waikato", things like Category:History of Waikato sound wrong to my kiwified ears... surely "History of the Waikato" is a more natural NZ-standard name for such a category? The same with Category:Buildings and structures in Waikato, Category:Education in Waikato, Category:Environment of Waikato, Category:Geography of Waikato, Category:NZHPT register in Waikato, Category:People from Waikato, Category:Politics of Waikato, Category:Sport in Waikato, Category:Transport in Waikato, and Category:Visitor attractions in Waikato, plus about 15 sub-subcategories. Oddly, we already have Category:Rugby league in the Waikato. I thought I'd see what people think here before considering a mass-CFR, especially since I realise "The Waikato" could become confused with the river in some cases. Any thoughts? - To quote Te Ara, "The Waikato region encompasses the Waikato, Matamata–Piako, Waipā and South Waikato districts, and Hamilton city. This is smaller than the Waikato regional council area, which extends to the King Country, Taupō, Hauraki and the Coromandel Peninsula, and parts of Rotorua district." - http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/waikato-region/page-1. The article named "Waikato" is about the Waikato regional council area, not about the smaller area described by that Te Ara page, which has long been called "the Waikato", but which that Te Ara page calls "Waikato", without a "the". In my view there should be an article about the smaller area, named "Waikato", and the current article about the Waikato regional council area should be renamed Waikato (regional council area) or something like that. As those categories apply to the Waikato regional council area, they should not be renamed to "... the Waikato". Nurg (talk) 05:37, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

Somebody has changed the small NZ flag to a lockwood design and it is showing up on a lot of articles. Outdated links at WikiProject New Zealand: Tools
At Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand#Tools there are old links to Reflinks, Checklinks and Dab solver. The orig pages have gone and the links now go to pages that suggest redirects. These 3 links and the preceding toolserver link do not appear to be NZ-specific, so I suggest we just delete the "Tools" subsection. Kia ora koutou - could someone please review the page Allie Eagle I've recently created? The page was tagged as requiring a re-write of the lede (which I've done) and further verification (which I don't think is necessary - the page could certainly be extended but the citations are, I think, adequate). I wouldn't usually ask, but the user who reviewed the page User:D'SuperHero has since deleted their account and seems to be involved in a sock puppet dispute, and I wonder if the page attracted their interest because the topics discussed involve abortion rights and Christianity Auchmill (talk) 20:58, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
