From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Digital history course[1], academic year 2021-2022, held by professor Federico Mazzini, the students will create and improve Wikipedia articles about history. The course aims at giving students the basic notions of digital history, with a particular attention to the management of historical data online, the nature and problems of historical sources on the Web and historical communication in a digital and multimedia environment.

An important part of the class revolves around the technical and conceptual notions that are needed to successfully interact with Wikipedia. The writing of an article following both the Wikipedia community rules and historical methodology will be an important part of the final grade for attending students.

This project is a part of it:Progetto:Coordinamento/Università we are leading in the Wikipedia in Italian, fully supported by the community. The same university had other courses running with Wikipedia (in English, in Italian).

See the project page in Italian.

What we do[edit]

During this workshop, we introduce Wikipedia as a learning tool and its essential guidelines.

The students will then be required to:

  • Translate Wikipedia articles from other languages under the tutors' supervision.
  • Create or substantially modify an article on the English Wikipedia. The article will have an historical focus, will be evaluated as part of the final grade and its title will have to be discussed with the professor in advance.
