SmackBot Page: Michael J Wade[edit]

I just activated a wikipedia account and did my first wikipage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_J_Wade

Two questions

1. Any suggestions on how to change the middle initial "J" to a "J." with a period? Please do so if you can.

2. How to disambiguate with "Michael Wade"?

Wingroras (talk) 15:39, 11 July 2011 (UTC)Wingroras[reply]

Done, you can follow my edits on those pages . Rich Farmbrough, 13:46, 12 July 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Hello Rich Farmbrough The picture on Michael J. Wade is tiny now. I looked at the File:MJWade.jpg and it all seems fine, as does the first line calling the picture on the page. Any ideas why the picture is not showing up? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Wingroras, 9:20, 18 July 2011 (CET).

False necessity[edit]

Hello Wingroras, Based on your comments I made extensive additions to the False necessity entry. Please take a look and see if this does not begin to answer your questions. Thanks! Archivingcontext (talk) 23:44, 15 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

FYI[edit]

The policy IRWolfie- is talking about is WP:OR - i.e. original research, not ongoing research. Arc de Ciel (talk) 23:53, 4 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • You need to discuss the issue on the talk page if you want the section to stay. You need to justify it rather than claiming to be a philosopher of science. IRWolfie- (talk) 23:47, 5 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Wingroras[edit]

I see that you have expertise in Mexican population genetics. Maybe you would like to contribute to the section on population genetics in the article on Demographics of Mexico. This section has been written based on interpretation of a single primary source and would benefit from a wider perspective. Best regards.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 19:09, 16 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Maunus. An honor, your invitation. It might take me some time to do this well and responsibly. There are folks at the UNAM in Mexico City which I could ask if they might be interested in doing this. Reactions?

Any one is welcome to edit it of course, and if they have expertise so much the better, but it does require taking the time to become familiar with the editing format and the ways in which we cite sources, and since you've already done that I thought you were the perfect candidate. Also I don't think the section should be very large or require detailed expertise, a brief review based on your general familiarity with the field and the major sources would be an excellent improvement already. Also there is no deadline here which is great, so when ever you have time you can come back and look at it. Best regards.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 04:20, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maunus, with various deadlines looming over my head, I managed to squeeze out a few minutes to add the following paragraph. It needs a lot of help, but is a start. Perhaps you or others you know could add to/tweak it?

The genetics and genomics underlying the putative "Mexican genome" is suspect. Novel and interesting articles on this topic can be found in a recent volume edited by Carlos López-Beltrán of the National Autonomous University of Mexico [7]. Carlos Galindo's paper in the volume (pp. 209-236) shows how censuses build racial categories. Such categories often cross-cut across countries. There is no scientific reason simpliciter why that should be the case. Moreover, if such categories, narrowly defined, are subsequently used to determine who should be sampled for genomic studies (potentially even by choosing to ask certain people rather than others based primarily on visual phenotypic appearance), there will be a kind of "looping effect" (Ian Hacking) in the genomic results. One will get out (racial groups) what one put in (racial groups), a point Winther makes (pp. 250-254). Fabrizzio Guerrero McManus' piece describes how the INMEGEN project is more about a "symbolic space" (p. 192) than a scientific project per se. López Beltrán and Vergara Silva's contribution discusses "genomic sovereignty" and ties the INMEGEN to (normative) nation building and identity. This collection by a variety of humanists points to weaknesses and confusions in the INMEGEN's potentially (reverse) imperialist project of defining a "Mexican type" (José Vasconcelos' "la raza cósmica"?), to which all Mexicans must, do, and will adhere.

Disambiguation link notification for July 10[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Cosmopolitanism, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Charles Taylor. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
