Welcome[edit]

Welcome!

Hello, Trafford09, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on discussion pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{helpme}} before the question. Again, welcome! --Anna Lincoln (talk) 11:44, 11 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Trafford09. I don't have enough experience on Wikipedia to adopt users, but if you are interested, you can find other more experienced people who are looking for adoptees on Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User/Adoptee's Area. I welcomed you not because you made any mistake, but because I was patrolling the new changes page (Wikipedia:Recent changes patrol) and I noticed that you had made some good-quality edits and I decided to welcome you; it was not any edit in special, but all of them together (I didn't look into all of them, just some). I see no problem in using the talkpages to communicate; I don't read the email very often, so I prefer to use the talk pages, if you don't mind. Best wishes, --Anna Lincoln (talk) 09:12, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Anna. That's fine, and thanks again for the welcome and tips, e.g. Trafford09 (talk) 10:03, 25 February 2009 (UTC) ![reply]

Hi[edit]

Hi Trafford09. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Meandv (talkcontribs) 16:02, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mumbai Reverts[edit]

(This section was added by Suyogaerospace, to reply to my query on his page about the topic. I've inserted my original query here too, for clarity.) Trafford09 (talk) 09:28, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My actual change to the Mumbai page was, following an existing sentence referring to "Mumbai's ... better standard of living ... attract migrants" to add this direct quote from the BBC: "[However,] around half of Mumbai's population live in slums." I included a proper reference to the article [ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7909660.stm ].

When my change was undone, I posted the following on the reverter's talk page, and you'll also see his reply on my page, below my query.

Hi Suyogaerospace. You seem to have undone a change I made today to Mumbai. Maybe you were correct to do so. However, my change was just to add a sentence of 9 words, complete with a proper reference to a BBC News article from today. Do you not think it was a little harsh that the reason given for undoing my contribution was the 1-word 'vandelism'? Trafford09 (talk) 09:28, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I have reverted your edits because its that policy, have you seen the HTML comments on mumbai page? It says that to do a change you should gain a census about it. Alreadly debate on % of people living in slums is going on (check talk page of mumbai) diffrent sources gives diffrent number of percentage. So its better to first agree on % and then add it on article. Secondly I request you to get involve in discussion on talk page. Please dont reignite this isssue ;) Dont consider my reverts as biting or harresment. Assume good faith (PS I just corrected a caption of an image and my edit was reverted just because I didnt put it on talk page then we had a huge debate and I was prove right ;))(Please reply on my talkpage)--Suyogtalk to me! 02:33, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hi again, Suyogaerospace. May I make the following observations:

1. It seems more helpful to have our comments on the same page, so I'll put my points here, and also put a small pointer on your talk page.

2. Yes, my contribution was with hindsight in error - a point I acknowledged in my query to you - because, as you correctly pointed out in your reply, there are rules on editing that article. When I posted my change, I hadn't realised these rules were in place. I hadn't appreciated that (a) it was an FA [Wikipedia Featured Article], nor that (b) there was much talk on its Discussion page. I also hadn't spotted that the article already contained my 9 words (albeit some pages further down, under Demographics, section 9).

3. However, the reverter said only 'Vandelism' as the reason for reverting. If they had instead said 'Vandalism - please see Discussion page.', or a few words to that effect, then I could have understood. After all, to most people, vandalism suggests something far worse. It may be deleting existing portions, defacing them, or adding content that is offensive, non-relevant, or unsupported by a proper reference to its source. My contribution was none of these.

4. You rightly advise "Assume good faith.". Surely one act of good faith would be to encourage a contributor, even if he is breaking rules. Simply point out to them where the rules are, rather than dismisss as 'vandalism', with no help to them?

5. Wikipedia's own advice - in Wikipedia:Simplified_ruleset - encourages contributors to: (1) Be bold! in updating pages. Go ahead, it's a wiki! Encourage others, including those who disagree with you, likewise to Be bold! (6) Particularly, don't revert good faith edits. Reverting is a little too powerful sometimes ... If you really can't stand something, revert once, with an edit summary something like "(rv) I disagree strongly, I'll explain why in talk." and immediately take it to talk.

6. You mention an edit of yours being reverted and your being proved right. How does this relate to my query?

7. I suggest the following spellings: vandalism, it's, Mumbai, consensus, different, don't, harassment. Trafford09 (talk) 11:03, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Hi hmmm your point number 3 to 5 are almost same so I'll answer them together.

  • I agree I didn't mention why I reverted it because that time I was clicked save page button in place of show preview. So to make up for it I posted a huge message on your talk page
  • My experience was just to tell you that not even establish and senior editors are spared ;) So you dont feel that Im biting you or harassing you
  • Coming to spellings I type too fast and some times sequence of keys get up-down, And when you get use to IMs and Voice to text things your writing and typing habbits fall apart ;)
  • I mostely prefer that other editors should reply on my talk page but still if you insist that you will reply on your talk page only then you can take help of Talkback template--Suyogtalk to me! 14:43, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help Request[edit]

{{helpme}} Please could you explain what (top) signifies, on a Page History page - I tried to find (top) in Help search, but no joy. Thx.

You probably mean on your contributions page. (Top) in that case means it's the last edit that was made to the page, the 'top' edit in the history. //roux   18:13, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent - that makes sense of it all. Many thanks. Trafford09 (talk) 18:41, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist[edit]

{{helpme}} Please could you advise me whether & how one can add http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/11.22.333.44 (as example) to one's watchlist? Thanks.

Unfortunately there is a software limitation that prevents things like contributions pages being added to watchlists. Basically, you cannot watchlist any page that is dynamically generated on each view (like contributions). //roux   07:15, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request for the name of a template[edit]

{{helpme}} Could somebody please tell me the name of one of the templates which appears when a logged-in editor writes a new article? The template I'm referring to is the one which includes the text "When creating an article, provide references to reliable published sources. An article without references will likely be deleted quickly.". I've searched Help, and followed links to Template:Semi-protected et al, but cannot find the one I'm seeking. Thanks in advance. Trafford09 (talk) 11:00, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Did you mean, {{refimprove}}, which looks like this;

{{refimprove}} (remove the tn| to see the real template for refimprove)

--  Chzz  ►  11:20, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, Chaz. I meant the one with the text I showed above. Maybe if you paste

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hjhjhjh&action=edit&redlink=1 into your browser, you'll see the exact page where it appears. (But thanks anyway.) Trafford09 (talk) 11:30, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'll take a look. There's so many tools out there. To make it easier, you might like to go to your perferences, and, in gadgets, enable FRIENDLY. That gives you buttons to very quickly tag articles with all kinds of things. --  Chzz  ►  11:32, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Aha, I think I've found what you mean! It's not a template, it's a function of the wiki software. If you go to an article that doesn't exist, for example jasdhfljhasdfk, and click "create this article", a message automatically appears at the top. It says;
  • Before creating an article, please read Wikipedia:Your first article, or search for an existing article to which you can redirect this title.
  • To experiment, please use the sandbox.
  • When creating an article, provide references to reliable published sources. An article without references will likely be deleted quickly.

(but with WIKILINKs); if you need it, I might be able to get a copy of the actual source code?

--  Chzz  ►  11:57, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm going to close off this 'helpme' for now. If you do require further help, please either contact me via my talk page, or put another helpme request on this page.

Questions while I was away[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you asked a couple of things in help, when nobody was there.

1 can you tell if an editor's logged in? (Except by checking their recent edits)

I don't think you can - unless you have another form of contact with them, such as MSN etc. Wikipedia is very 'anonymous. If they don't edit, they don't show up.

2 How do you tell an editor's rights?

Go to Special, Log (where you normally see contributions, change the pull-down to "user rights log", leave the "user" box empty, and in the "Title" box, put "User:Chzz" (or whoever).
Note - this confuses everyone; if you put a name in the "User", it shows you rights that that user has given.
Alternatively, Special, users - rights are shown in brackets after the name, if there are any.

Frusciante heroin addiction is unsourced?[edit]

That very same article says he was addicted to heroin. 200.160.69.53 (talk) 16:11, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP200. I looked at your contribution to the John Frusciante Main Page article, and noticed you'd not included an in-line citation, nor had you provided any WP:edit summary. I then examined the other previous contributions from the IP address you used, and looked at the prior warnings on your talk page. Hence my warning - but I admit I was unaware that your claim (whilst uncited) was in fact true. Nonetheless, I presume that Frusciante is best known for his good guitar work, rather than his drug-addiction? The article says "In 1998, he successfully completed drug rehabilitation"; doesn't the passing of 11 years since then earn him a break? Also, you said yourself that the article already referred to his prior drug problem. I wonder whether there's much merit in the article referring to it twice. Maybe the other contributions from your IP address weren't made by you? Had you considered registering a user name instead of the IP? Anyway, I hope to be praising your future Wikipedia contributions. If I can be any help, please ask. Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 16:58, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He's not know for good guitar work but for playing guitar in Red Hot Chili Peppers and during that time he did a lot of heroin. 200.160.69.53 (talk) 23:44, 2 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
[citation needed] - with bio's of living persons, we have to be particularly careful about the facts - especially if they are contentious - see WP:BLP. In this specific case, I can see your point - and agree that he's best known as a member of the Chilli's. Doing a rough calc though, from Google News, I get just over 1000 hits for "Frusciante guitar" (here) and only about 200 for "Frusciante heroin" (here). Not the most scientific of tests, but it's something. Therefore, in the interests of balance, I'd have to say that it's not appropriate to add that info. If you disagree, you should suggest your edit on the article discussion page, Talk:John Frusciante.
Also, I'd just like to support what Trafford09 said - get yourself a Wikipedia account, for all kinds of reasons.

Removal of text on talk pages[edit]

Regarding this edit to User:Dr. Blofeld's talk page, he is permitted to remove comments from his own talk page as he sees fit, even though archiving is preferred, this is also true of warning templates as removing a warning template implies that you have read and understand it. Also I hope you can appreciate the irony in not signing your comment about signing comments. --kelapstick (talk) 18:35, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Guidelines for new articles[edit]

Apparently:
"Before creating an article, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines to which all articles should adhere. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite to reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, negative content about living people.

Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.

If you still think an article is appropriate, see Help:Starting a new page. You might also look at Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:How to write a great article for guidance, and please consider taking a tour through the Wikipedia:Tutorial so that you know how to properly format the article before creation."

Re: AIV[edit]

Hello - thanks for the message. You're doing fine! My meaning was that IP addresses - especially dynamic ones like that one - cannot be vandalism-only accounts. The next person who logs on from their living room may be completely different than this guy and we don't want them to feel unwelcome. Also, IPs are rarely blocked longer than 24 to 48 hours unless it's a static IP with a long history of abuse. This IPs three edits don't qualify.

Lastly, be sure that any editor you're about to report to AIV a) has been given a final level 4 warning, and b) has made an abusive edit after that final warning. Many users are simply testing out the 'anyone can edit' thing; others will stop after the level 3 warning, as this particular editor did; and even more will stop after their final warning. We want to be preventing current abusive edits from a bad-faith user, not punishing for edits made several hours or days prior. The vandalism and blocking policies have more information. Keep up the good work! - KrakatoaKatie 02:26, 22 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments and the other improvements you made on the article. As to the "in" part, it may be a US/British English thing, or maybe even a Pacific Northwest thing, or possibly the usage in this particular manner. Here we also usually use "in" as in your car example, but there 1985 will always be 1985. With this example the time frame will vary depending on the person at the beginning of the sentence, as in his senior year was 1963 to 1964, but my senior year was 1993 to 1994. Now, I don't know if that is the reason why here we more typically omit the "in" when discussing students and their class years, but my experience is that we do omit it. The other change I had reverted, just FYI, is a bit clunky with my wording, but the use of "third year" (or "first year") is the lingo for law school, but I had to make sure people understood it was also the final year. Thanks. Aboutmovies (talk) 07:13, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

predatory revisions[edit]

Trafford

After I was 'advsied' not to add an extrenal link, and it was removed, I checked the extrenal links on a number of entries.

Clearly, there were commercial, advertisng based links. So, I decided I would remove thos offending items.

The revisons I made have been 'reverted', with no reasonable explantion

I am concerned that this system is one rule for one person, and another rule for another person, and that my updates are being 'attacked'.

Either the extrenal oinks policy if followed by everyone, or not.

I would liek you to review the site entry for 'high end audio', specifically the external links, and reveiw the recent 'updates'.

If my suggested link does not follow guidelines, I fail to see how the ones that someone is trying to hang to can meet the guidelines too.

kindest regards

inappropriate warning[edit]

Trafford

I got a threatening warning from User:Bgs022 about my edits.

I am unable to communicate with them, and see no reason why I should be threatened for doing something that is correct.

Is there an independent 'abuse' review system in place ?

kindest regards, Zabadac (talk) 19:19, 1 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for the feedback[edit]

I appreciate you taking the time for feedback. I've found a way to communicate back to the user who gave me a warning, asking for a review of his/her actions.

I seem to have hit on a nerve with someone, somewhere. Otherwise I wouldn't attract this attention.

My stance is that if you can have one or more links to single specialist commercial sites, including a major magazine or two, then you can have another one, as long as its relevant and useful resource. Clearly someone thought otherwise, and pointed to the guidelines as the authority for the removal of my edits (made in good faith). I am now at a loss to understand what constitutes a valid external link.

So, a detailed review of those guidelines told me that there were in fact a load of other links that supposedly broke the guidelines. So, I cleaned up the entries.

I will take this matter to dispute if I am attacked again without good reason, and any valid edits that I make reverted.

My view is that there are conflicts of interest here, and I will test the impartially of these people. Seems a bit like 'big bother'.

Of course, someone can simply block my account. Who really cares - well, I do because this activity is not in the spirit, or guidelines, of Wikipedia.

Thanks for the advice to tread carefully, but really, who should I be afraid of? This is either a fair process, or not.

It will be interesting to see. I wait for a response to my refuting the warning.

kindest regards

Regarding Helpme[edit]

Ya sure! Thanks Kesangh (talk) 09:16, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

Thanks for the help, I'll make the relevant changes. On a lighter note, what did you mean by It's really just a case of your being bold, I am just doing my job. I am not familiar with this live talk feature. Is it really better than typing 'helpme' on the talkpage. Do people prefer to use the live talk feature than the' helpme' thing. Kindly tell me more about this. And how are only a few selected events are mentioned in On this day section out of all the entries, i don't see any difference in the syntax of these selected events in the edit section. Who selects the events which should be displayed on the Main page? By the way, i noticed that you copied some of the text from your own talkpage onto my talkpage :-)

Thanks for your help. Well, i am familiar with the being bold thing. As it was already late, i wanted someone else to add the information on the Main page. If i had asked someone to help me with the procedure of editing the Main page then that would have taken still more time and eventually, it would have been too late. But that's okay, Shivaji's coronation was celebrated yesterday as per the Marathi calendar and today as per the Gregorian calendar. I have added the relevant information to the On this day... section, but my edits are not visible on the Main page. Going through the link you gave me, i understood about the criteria required for listing an event on the Main page, but who's going to really put the particular event(if it deserves so) on the Main page, the admins? How to get an admin to see if the event i am talking about could be included on the Main page? If possible, can you yourself add the relevant information on the Main page. I got to go. Kindly help. Thanks Kesangh (talk) 07:40, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, when adding a new section onto somebody's talk page, please add it at the bottom of their page, rather than the top. It's just a WP convention - see WP:Talk_page_guidelines#Layout. BQ[edit]

I think my grandson might have started me off on a page that he knew was touchy. I will have a talk with him when he gets back. He is a bit of a mischief maker sometimes. From the looks of it this BQ person that controls the page snaps at anyone that comes by. I know someone that will be spending a little more time during his visit on his bicycle instead of this computer. Looks like I have a long Summer ahead. A tag has been placed on Commis waiter requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article consists of a dictionary definition or other article that has been transwikied to another project and the author information recorded.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Sicilian Vespers Discussion page[edit]

Traf: If you get a chance to look at the Sicilian Vespers talk page, please reply to my comments to rewright and rearrange the article. I really want to include the five points I numbered as it is crutial to understanding why the vespers were a world changing event, not merely a local revolt on the island. In fact, even the very first paragraph is chronologically incorrect according to Runciman and other sources. It does not mention Tancred in the Norman line of sucession after Fredrick II, and then Manfred's fight for the crown. Charles negotiated for the purchase of the crown with Pope Urban for, inter alia, and annual tribute of 10,000 ounces of gold. But Urban died before the deal was written and Charles re-negotiated the deal with Pope Clement, and because Manfred was now hard pressing Rome and other northern Italian Geulf cities, the price was reduced to 8,000 ounces of gold.Siciliano99 (talk) 07:42, 15 September 2009 (UTC)Siciliano99[reply]

There is evidently a good bit of history behind that particular user, with a good compendium of sources here: User_talk:AnmaFinotera/Archive_11#User:174.3.123.220. Actually I *have* managed to generate a few responses from him, but they were uniformly argumentative and did about as much to advance the discussion as silence - see my Talk page for a few examples of that. Greatly appreciated.<span style="border: 1px solid; background-color:darkUser:Chzz|  Chzz ]] ►  22:46, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks for the invitation, but I don't think I'll have much time to devote to the AFC area - sorry.
I find I need to limit my time to my Watchlist, and doing c-e on any page I read.
That and welcoming new users / chastising miscreants seems to take up my time.
Actually, if I had more time, I'd work on an article of my own - but haven't got to that stage yet.
Can't match your phenomenal work-rate, I'm afraid, but hats off to you for your labour of love. Trafford09 (talk) 14:43, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, no trouble at all, my friend - just worth an ask; as you know, from time-to-time, I help with certain issues, and occasionally ask for help. If you do have 10 mins to do one AFC, that'd be lovely; if you don't, not a problem.
I know just what you mean, because I myself am often swamped; I have an enormous to-do list, and indeed many articles that I've been wanting to create for simply ages.
Re. welcoming new users - I might just be able to help you speed that up a little bit; have a stare at user:chzz/logw - I can produce an updated list like that any time, which *only* shows users with contribs - hence w/ popups it's pretty quick to look at their contribs, and to right-click to use my 'welcome' or to welcome them AND tell them about refs; of course, that is just my way of doing it - but could be adapted, whatever. I find it makes the 'welcoming' a little easier to do. Although, I don't have the chance to do it myself as often as I would like.
Please do pop in and chat, whenever; these American chaps don't understand football, and I could always do with someone to yell at about Japanese forwards, sympathise over blind refs who eat all pies, and suchlike. Only a few days to go now, hurrah!  Chzz  ►  14:57, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I did just update that listing, with some current data - so if you do want to play with it and welcome some of them, go for it. Mata ne.  Chzz  ►  15:07, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh - forgot to say ta for the tea you poured me. Ta.
Will check /logw. I know I used your technique in the past, but it's so easy using TW, with bespoke welcomes for all sorts of suspected animals: IP, good, bad, anti-vandal, etc. etc..
Now, here's one for you (with your skills!). How's about adding in an IRC welcome skeleton into TW's repertoire?
If you do that - if only for me - I'd be an avid IRC-inviter.
Will visit IRC ere long (& ask you re smoking!).
Re welcoming - you do well to delegate that - your skills are best used elsewhere for bigger stuff.

Re. Twinkle - sure, could do; how about a modified version of my welcome user:chzz/w?
For 'just you' - ask Tim Song (talk · contribs) - he knows how to add bespoke setting bits to Twinkle, as they have done so for me - I log all my PROD and CSD to user:Chzz/PRODlog and User:Chzz/CSDlog - using a modification Tim wrote, User:Tim Song/afchelper4.js - the only complication being, you have to then install Twinkle the 'long way', in your monobook, rather than gadget. (Erm, unless you are using Vector...in which case, seek phych help, it's awful).
For anyone - put in a request with the Twinkle maintainers.

Collapsing[edit]

Thanks - will incorporate that, too. Tables aren't too bad, then! Trafford09 (talk) 11:40, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Mmm. I use the 'collapse' for my 'notes' at top of my user talk page, which I find particularly useful; I also have a little extra button at top (next to logout/clock) to let me swiftly edit user:chzz/note - that is, the page transcluded in the collapsed box at top of my user page. That is quite easy to do too; I don't want to confuse, but, it's actually much easier than in sounds. Just a few lines in my monobook.js;
Chzznote = {
	ChzznoteGet: function() {
		Chzznote.ChzzNode = addPortletLink( 'p-personal', "http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Chzz/note&action=edit", 'Note', 'Note', 'Make a note', '' );
		Chzznote.ChzzNode.style.fontSize = 'normal';
	},
}

addOnloadHook( function() {
		Chzznote.ChzznoteGet();

	}
);
Of course, you'd change the URL to point to your own page. Nifty stuff. (Assuming you are using monobook; I've ni if it works same in Vector).
Also: If you feel like it, it would be ace to actually document some of this stuff; maybe the reply I wrote to you earlier on my talk, plus bits of this stuff, but a bit clearer, should go into user:chzz/help? Do you think? (And of course feel free to boldly just do it, if you like; I often find the best way to really learn something is to try explaining it to others!)  Chzz  ►  11:47, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Point taken - I do intend to document some of this very useful advice, into user:chzz/help.
I'm starting by familiarising myself with your Help subpages, so that I end up putting things in the right place.
If I find anything, along the way, that I feel I can further improve, I'll be bold.
I expect you have your subpages on your watchlist, so you'll spot any changes by me or others.
Thanks again, Trafford09 (talk) 10:26, 8 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That'd be great, if you could do that. I do watchlist my own pages, but I'm lax at checking them - too many other things to do. But please do boldly help make them better.
The answers I gave, now in User talk:Chzz/Archive 23#Questions, might well be useful to others - feel free to make a page about it, and if you think it's best under my help folder, go for it - and perhaps the stuff from above too. In fact, there's probably tons of things in my talk page archives that ought to be in some kind of 'help' heirarchy; if you fancy working on that, it'd be very worthwhile - I honstly would/will do it myself, one day...but as usual - well, I'm working on reforming WP:FEED and WP:AFC, the help channel, writing a new stalk bot, working on strategy re. RfA, and a zillion other things - which is also why I posted the request below; I do as much as I can, but can't do everything, so I hope you won't mind my occasionally passing things like that over. Also, I love WP:TPS'ers :-)

Still about?[edit]

'coz Aleenf1 is asking after you, so if you are, pop in again. Chzz  ►  12:40, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And online again, actually, now.
So - England kick off at 1930 against the USA. No doubt Yanks will turn up at 1941 and claim a victory. :p  Chzz  ►  15:17, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ho-ho - like that. Didn't like the goal we gifted them, quite so much! Ah well, a draw v USA's not too bad a result. So, next Fri. 3pm 7:30 pm UK time - fingers crossed. Trafford09 (talk) 22:51, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You know where I will be.

Good title for topic. Must point out my earlier mistake re Friday's match - of course it's at 7:30 pm UK time. Now off to look up what <code> does. Trafford09 (talk) 07:42, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just stopping by to say thanks for this. Flyer22 (talk) 19:07, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome - I'd just learnt how to do Tables, so I was 'bold' & took the opportunity to practice. Glad you didn't mind my interfering. Trafford09 (talk) 22:01, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This user is a Go player.

I didn't throw you off with anything I said, did I? I hope you don't feel I have disrespected the game in any way. I can see how it may be difficult to understand how I can be a 2-dan without being in any Go association, but it is not something I just guessed. It is the rank most experienced players have assigned to me. Flyer22 (talk) 03:53, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Lol - no, not thrown off, & no disrespect felt at all. Just full of admiration [ok - if I'm honest - absolute envy :) ] for you, that you reached such a high level in Go, without the help & support of a Go association. I also wonder how much better still you'd have become, were you in one. Moreover, I know that the BGA - and therefore I'm sure the AGA - would be so delighted to welcome a new 2-dan to their midst - esp. a female one - the game needs more women players IMHO - to keep us men in our place. I love the cut+thrust & camaraderie of going to many live Go tournaments across Europe & occasionally East Asia. Is there a go club (http://www.usgo.org/cgi-bin/chapters.cgi) near you?
Do you ever play on-line games, on KGS Go Server or OGS or similar? Trafford09 (talk) 08:43, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thank goodness (LOL). And no need to envy me. You are at a pretty good level yourself, better than my siblings have managed to get to (that's for sure; except for my 13-year-old sister who now loves the game through Hikaru no Go, they aren't really interested in Go). And, yes, I used to play online (mainly through GS Go Server), which is why I asked you. It was one of the main ways I could play with people of different walks of life. Flyer22 (talk) 09:05, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks it's taken me many, many years to reach 5-kyu level. I got stuck at 13-kyu, then 7-kyu, & am now just plain erratic! When you mentioned "GS Go Server", did you mean KGS? Trafford09 (talk) 09:29, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
LOL, being erratic is understandable with this game. And, yes, I meant KGS. Typo. Flyer22 (talk) 11:49, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:173.168.177.217[edit]

Do you really wish to talk to me, or is this just an automated message? Although I keep the same IP address for a long time, I have no control over it. Sometimes, my IP address changes. And I obviously do not take credit for messages made from my IP by other people. We can talk. As long as it is not an automated reply. 173.168.177.217 (talk) 00:37, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there '173.168.177.217'. Glad to talk. The welcome msg. & the last section added to your talk page a few hours ago were from me, and I'm not a robot! (Please see my User page, to see proof that I'm not). Just wanted to point out to you that most of us editors start off by using an IP address, but then after a while we switch to using a registered account. There are so many advantages, compared with an anonymous IP a/c. I can understand and sympathise with you, if you're using a shared IP address - you will receive polite but constructive warnings for anything untoward done by every other user of that IP address. But if you register an a/c (like mine - "Trafford09" - then you'll receive only any talk intended for you personally.
But anyway, welcome to Wikipedia - although it looks as though you've been around long enough to have picked up some useful tips on using WP.
If I can ever be any help - say you have any question on WP or how best to use it - please don't hesitate to ask me here, and you'll get a swift response.
One more thing - looks like we share an interest in the great Joe Bonamassa (Sloe Gin's my favourite).
Hope you continue to enjoy Wikipedia! Best regards, Trafford09 (talk) 08:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Alan Riley, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Hmm - I've no wp:COI with the person (nor any associated body) to whom the article relates. Never corresponded with him nor spoken to him. However, I feel he is notable, & will seek to persuade other editors of this, on the article's the talk page. Trafford09 (talk)

Would you be happy for me to move the article to a user page of yours (for example User:Trafford09/Alan Riley - that way you could work on it before moving it back ? Codf1977 (talk) 15:53, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Codf, that would be great. I'm very new to article creation etc., & I have no wp:COI in the person - just think he's notable. If you move it for me, I guess then I could try to de-advert it, & get more wp:RS. I_do_ wish I'd used my sandbox in the first place! At a wild guess, do you suspect it may pass muster after I've worked on it & 'resubmit' it? I'd be very grateful for any tips you could send my way (& of course, if you can de-advert it, that would also be much appreciated).
Regards, Trafford09 (talk) 16:04, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved it for you to User:Trafford09/Alan Riley - let me know if you need any help moving it back when you have worked on it. Codf1977 (talk) 16:13, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much. Yes, if it's ok with you, I'll consult you after my further edits & wp:RS, before trying to reinstate it.
A bit of collaboration never did any harm! Feel free to de-advert it too, should you have time & inclination. Ta, Trafford09 (talk) 16:17, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Always best to work in user-space if you aren't really sure, Trafford. You could also use WP:AFC to get it re-checked, and get feedback. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  16:36, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Chzz, I came to realise that, whilst in the middle of my initial edits. Guess I should have stopped then, & transferred it to my space. Big lesson learnt. Trafford09 (talk) 16:41, 17 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please have a read of the following pages :

Just because a paper, blog or news site mentions ResPublica, it does not mean that it should go into the External links section of the article, if you wish to have them listed to demonstrate the notability then add them to the Talk page. Codf1977 (talk) 12:40, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback and offer to help with the curvilinear disparity article. As it is a relatively specialised topic, it has been tricky to find suitable articles to link from so your help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. I think the Tea Party movement in the US is a good contemporary example of curvilinear disparity. Some candidates (such as Rand Paul) who were not favoured by the Republican Party, have been selected in primaries nevertheless, largely as a result of tea party activists. This might be good additional example to make the article more relevant to an American audience. Thanks again. Eoinjones (talk) 12:11, 16 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know I have now added the Tea Party example to the article. If you get a chance to glance at it some time I would appreciate your feedback. Good luck against Slovenia in the final group game. My nation is unfortunately unrepresented due to a handball by Thierry Henry ;) Eoinjones (talk) 20:16, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated ResPublica, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ResPublica. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. Codf1977 (talk) 13:10, 21 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PIA[edit]

Its not about which article is popular its about listing it in alphabetical order.119.155.43.30 (talk) 10:41, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hiya. Thanks for starting discussion about this. As the discussion affects any reader of the PIA page, I've copied your comment to the PIA article's Talk:PIA page, and I'll reply to you there shortly, so that other editors can also participate in the discussion.

Archives[edit]

I'm pretty sure you already know by now, but...I move things to my archives quite quick. So if you didn't catch my reply, it's in User_talk:Chzz/Archive_23#ResPublica. I hope you don't think I'm dismissing things if I move them, it's just that my talk page gets so busy...but I am always v happy to answer things. Just...if the reply disappears, you know where it will be - just search my archive on your name. Looking forward to the big game later! Cheers,  Chzz  ►  05:03, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah - your suspicion was correct - I hadn't spotted your latest reply there. Have now read it. So, always use {{citation}}, check their 'press+media' for RS, read wp:NONFREE & see /yourboilerplate. Gotcha. (T-7hrs!) Arigatou. --Trafford09 (talk) 09:38, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, your archive has 2 tb templates in big blue - would you have seen them?
Also, ur Talk page refers to User_talk:Jimbo_Wales#AFC.2C_Archive.2C_and_re._new_users_making_articles, which may not be the link now most applicable? --Trafford09 (talk) 09:52, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm - wouldn't your Pirates graph be better on the right, so the Contents is as usu. on the left?
But it fills in white space - guess that's good.
Also, pray tell, give me a clue re the Pirates' significance. --Trafford09 (talk) 10:01, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What does Ref. Chzz/1159711711597103101 mean? --Trafford09 (talk) 10:08, 18 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Re. 'talkback' in archive - yes, I often put them direct in there. There's more than 2, actually. The trouble with 'tlp' or whatever is, you then use the link to the section, if there's one specified. Someone should improve the template, I imagine, to have some 'done' parameter or something. But yes - I have indeed seen them. Usually, when I archive them, I add a note to say what happened - in that case though, I was a bit lax.
  • For the UAA one on my talk, see UAA end of here. Hard to keep up with UAA archival, but I have followed up - 1 2
So - I think you can mostly assume if something is on my talk or archive that I've seen it. Thanks for asking about those though - I try to remember to check things, but I do really appreciate when people like yourself, and other TPS, look in to things / check on them / respond. All help is greatly appreciated.
Re. Mr. Wales - sadly, the same cannot be said for his talk page. So re. your comment about that link...yes, it was archived, with no response or comment. Great pity. Link now User talk:Jimbo Wales/Archive 60#AFC, Archive, and re. new users making articles. It's disappointing that I've now posted that in two places - AFC talk and Mr. Wales page (which followed my talking to him about new users, and the difficulties they face). I will definitely follow up on that - not quite sure how or where, yet. The system really does need considerable improvement.
Re. pirates / header - if you can improve it, go ahead. User:Chzz/talkheader3 is the first bit. If you can shuffle the pirate graph though, please do. The reference to the ratio of pirates/global warming is a Flying Spaghetti Monster thing, and should be of great concern to us all. Remember to show your support on Sept. 19th. I do like to sneak in FSM refs sometimes - see here.
Re. Ref. Chzz/1159711711597103101 - mostly, it is a 'unique string' which makes it easier for me when asking OTRS people to locate emails that use my own boilerplate, by searching for it. Hmm, how are your cryptography skillz? Are you familiar with ASCII code ? Have a think, before using the hints... Chzz  ►  20:27, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hint 1 - spoiler

Try holding down the 'ALT' key, and whilst holding it, press '1', then '1', then '5' on the numeric keypad, then release ALT.

Hint 2 - spoiler

"115" is the decimal representation of the ASCII code for "s". "97" is "a". "117" is "u". etc.
