Nehru Zoological park

Translating article Jean de Sperati

Hi Tirkfl,

I had a go at translating the article that you put on the request list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jean_de_Sperati

However, I felt that the details were not consistent between the English stub (referred to a trial abandoned due to WWII) and the German detailed article (referred only to main trial later). Also the length of prison sentence was given as 1 year in English, 2 years in German. I tried the links provided but details still conflicted. I have gone with the German translation as more detail was given but I simply do not know which is correct.

As you put the article on the translation list and mark stamp collecting as an interest, perhaps you might know. If so, do you think you could take a look please.

OK, great. I did go back and look at the newly-edited article and I couldn't resist making some small changes, mostly punctuation changes. I'm not sure how the translation procedure is supposed to work, so I appreciate your help. It sounds a bit complicated on the explanation page. (I did a couple of translations myself, without using the "official" mechanism -- but also without any proofreaders. If you'd like to look at Barbara Uthmann and Adam Ries, that would be great. :-) My interest is that Barbara has to do with my passion, bobbin lace (Kloeppeln), and a small museum about her is in Adam's house.)

I'm sorry to ask for your help, but I'm having trouble finding my way around to get the answers myself. I'd really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

I'd like to start on a translation and use the procedure that is described on the translation page. But I'm not finding all the information I need.

I thought I'd work on an English translation of the Zabern-Affaire article, which is fairly long but doesn't look too awful (if I skip the poetry at the bottom!). I tried to figure out what the help page said to do to sign up as the translator. But how do I fill in the "Permanent link" part? Do I get that somehow from the original German page by clicking on the "Seite zitieren" button on the left? What do I type in the translation box?

For the articles you translated, I noticed that the English articles also had the translation information at the top. Is that done by simply adding a line like:

{{Wikipedia:Translation/Saverne Affair}}

at the top of the translated English page?

The translation procedure is not that difficult as it might look like at first glance. The permanent link can be found in the left column of the German article, directly above the "Seite zitieren" button. The permanent link's purpose is to make sure, that always the same article version is translated, even if the translation lasts for weeks or months.

Simply put {{Wikipedia:Translation/Saverne Affair}} on the top of the article and on the other pages, that are found in the instructions box at Wikipedia:Translation/Saverne_Affair.

Hello Tirkfl -

OK, I found the button above the "Seite zitieren" button. Gosh, I don't know why I didn't see that before! The other piece of information that I needed here was what I was supposed to do once I clicked on the button. :-) I figured out that I needed to cut-and-paste the URL from the top of my browser into the translation box. Now I have a clickable link there. :-)

Next problem is that the Severne article has two pictures. One of them appears to already be in Wikimedia but the other one doesn't seem to be (the Zaberner Altstadt) -- at least as nearly as I can tell. What do I have to do to get it in Wikimedia, or am I better off removing it from the English article?

I got most of the article translated last night but there are a lot of links to verify now :-( as well as proofreading.

What would you suggest regarding the poems in the article? I'm not entirely sure I understand them enough to translate them. Should I just leave them out, or would you be willing to come up with something (no matter how rough - I don't think we're looking for great poetry here!)?

Regarding the pictures: That is too complicated too explain in short, but there is a good help page available: Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons. If you don't want to register at Wikimedia Commons, I can transfer the image for you as well.

Regarding the poems: I can do at least a literal translation. I think it would be better to leave the poems untranslated and append the translation. I am going to have a look at it over the weekend.

It looks as if the requester, RCS, has been editing my half-finished translation already. The picture is now there -- but it's not the same one that was in the German article. It doesn't really matter, though. I'll stick the German poems in the article again so you can see them more easily (even though they're still available on the German page).

I completed the translation for the Severne Affair just now. I made an attempt at translating the poetry, although I'm not sure how correct the translation is. I'm very glad that I have a very big German dictionary! There are some rather obscure words in the poems. Thank you for whatever time you spent looking at the poems this past weekend.

I also did translations for Hans Ertel and Gundula Janowitz. Hans Ertel's article is pretty simple, even though it has big technical words. They're all pretty straightforward (I think!).

Since RCS (Edelseider) was the requester for both the Severne Affair and Gundula Janowitz, I let him know on his talk page that the articles were done. But if you'd like to proofread any of the articles I recently finished, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding your Ried im Innkreis article, the person who first signed up as proofreader was not registered (IP address) and doesn't seem to have done much recently, so I may decide to sign up for it, anyway. I also noticed that you have an article ready for proofreading about Joseph Bessala, so I may add that one to my to-do list, as well.

The translation box indicates that you could use some help with your translation of the article about Turracher Höhe Pass. What sort of help do you need? Is there something I can do to help you?

I'm looking at Ried am Innkreis now. The coordinate information displayed at the top right of the page makes me dizzy! There are two sets of (slightly different) coordinates displayed on top of each other. One apparently comes from the infobox and the other one from a line at the bottom of the page:

{{coor title dm|48|13|N|13|30|E|region:AT_type:city}}

I would simply remove this line, but I'm not sure what the fields besides the coordinates really mean. Could you take a look and see if the line can be removed?

I'm translating another article. Can you explain to me how to find the categories? It seems incredibly difficult to have any idea at all what to use for categories. There has to be an easier way to search for them. I think you're involved somehow with the categories project, aren't you?

Thanks for proofreading Franz Matt, by the way. Not one of my best efforts, but ...

What is your interest in Magnus? He sounds like an interesting character. I'll see what I can do, but you're right: it might need re-writing. I can barely understand much of it.

In the reference at the bottom, there is a phrase in parentheses: (et tidsbillede af det sekstende århundrede). Do you know if that's part of the title (should not be translated) or if it is something that ought to be translated? It's in Danish. My dictionaries don't have "tidsbillede", but it is approximately like Zeitbild (which also isn't in my German dictionaries), perhaps "contemporary image"? If so, it would be "a contemporary image from the 16th century".

Have you gotten away from the translating business these days?

... a bit more. It looks like Funktop did most/all of the edits. At one point, someone reverted 49 of his edits! Now his userid is red and the edits are being made by a IP address, which just might be the same guy. The edits are still being made fairly regularly, the last one just a couple of days ago. OK, I understand. I'm just nervous about the guy not quite being done yet. He seems to have been making updates on a fairly regular basis for a while.

betr Danish: That was the first language I tried to teach myself to read. There's a big lacemaking tradition in Denmark, too! :-) So I bought myself a couple of dictionaries and starting looking up every word. Which is also, by the way, how I started with German. I'm largely self-taught, so there are some big holes in my German skills. My Danish is much worse than my German. And I wouldn't even begin to try to pronounce Danish, though I think my German pronunciation is OK. Then there's the French I took so many years of in school and then forgot all of, once I got involved with German. I have a dictionary for that, too. You might have noticed that I proofread a small translation from Norwegian recently. The Scandinavian languages are so closely related that the natives can understand each other. Since the spelling is different, it can be tough to look up words in a dictionary for me, however.

betr Magnus: I'm tempted to let it sit for a few days and see if the guy is finished with it yet. I don't know if he ever read the comments on his user talk page or on the article's talk page, and since he isn't a user anymore (probably kicked off), it would be hard to ask him now. I suspect he might be from the Faroe Islands, judging from his contribution history, and trying to make sure that his homeland is properly represented (like some Austrian and Strasbourg guys I can think of), but his English writing skills are not very good.

I'll put Magnus's page on my watchlist...

One bit of data is his spouse. However, he was married twice, according to the article. What is "usually" done in a case like this? I'd be tempted to list both of them, but I don't know.

Did you notice that the other editor has made more edits to the Magnus' article? I suspect that it might not make sense to do the German translation and integration of English information that I had planned. Yes, it's according to the rules that anyone's work may be replaced at any time, but not exactly nice if the guy is working in good faith, as he seems to be. Do you have any opinions on it?

As I was editing the article, I had a conflict with another editor. The previous editor is continuing to make changes and has completely overwritten the work which you (and I) had been making. I don't think it's worthwhile to continue editing this article until he has completely finished.

Brauerei Ottakringer

In my wanderings, I came across the page for Brauerei Ottakringer, which was listed as an orphan page. I managed to find two perfectly valid links to add to it, so I did that and removed the orphan tag.

But the article is very small and badly written, whereas the German article has quite a bit of information. The English article as also tagged as possibly not being particularly important.

As an Austrian, what do you think? Is this article worth translating or expanding? (Of course, if I get bored enough over the holidays, I just might translate it before you have a chance to answer me. :-) )

I've started working on the article. Thank heavens (or maybe thank you) that all the pretty pictures are in Commons, so I can add them. I updated the version of the article that the translation is based on, since I figured we might as well use the most recent one, rather than one that is several months old. Thanks for taking a look at what I got finished with it last night! As you are well aware, there are a lot of difficult terms in it, which even my biggest dictionary doesn't have. Google is a wonderful thing -- almost (but not quite) as good as Wiki! I found some of the smelting terms on other pages. I'm glad you seem to know something about skiing terms. To answer your question, I have three dictionaries and I tend to use the biggest one most often. The smallest is a paperback dictionary, which I find less and less useful as I go along, presumably because I already know a fair percentage of the words in it, so it's less and less likely to have the word I'm trying to find the meaning of. The medium dictionary is the Langenscheidt New College German Dictionary. Every once in a while, it has a word in it that the big one doesn't have. My BIG dictionary is has two names. English: Collins Unabridged Dictionary, 4th edition. German: Pons Collins Großwörterbuch für Experten und Universität, Neubearbeitung 1999. That means that it discusses the new spelling reform, but in between the first version of the reform and the latest one. That makes things interesting, though the other two dictionaries are both pre-reform. The Collins is about 26 cm x 18 cm x 7 cm, printed in small letters on Bible-paper and has over 2000 pages. :-) It is truly the "secret" of my success when translating!

That's more than you even wanted to know, but you did ask.

This article was painful when I got to the flowers and animals. At least the flowers had the Latin names, so I could cross-reference them between the German and English Wikis. I'm not entirely sure I have all the plants and animals correct, but we don't have to be entirely perfect. We can leave something for somebody else to do, oder?

I'm glad that you've returned! I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I enjoyed working on the article. I realized later that one word I had trouble with was actually the name of something, so I'll go back and change it again. I'm not sure what to do with the peer review you requested, so I'll probably just leave that.

I see you are working on the Finnish article now. I considered that one, but I didn't sign up for it. Have fun with it.

If you read the translations talk page, you'll see that I'm really trying to clean up the German backlog, since I found quite a few translation requests that aren't recorded on the pages and I can't fit them on the German translation page because of transclusion problems. I'd really appreciate your help with proofreading. I have several translations needing proofreading now, for January and December, and I expect to have quite a few more. Any help regarding either translating or proofreading would be wonderful. (I'm not sure why I went looking for them, other than too much of my career spent doing software maintenance. :-) ) Another solution might be to have another page linked to the main German page with the additional translations.

Thanks for adding the picture to the brewery article. As you can tell, someone else added the picture to the F60 article.

I figured that you would like me to read your Finnish article when it was done. I'd be happy to help out. (After all, it does get another article off the German list!) Thank you for proofreading the other articles. It is greatly appreciated. BTW, only one section of the "Operation W" article was translated from German, not the whole thing. (The German article on the subject is quite different.) But it doesn't hurt to fix up stuff you find, even if it's not part of the translation. I happened to come across the translation template in the middle of that article when I was looking for something else, which is the first hint I had that there were translation boxes around that had never made it to the translation pages. And that started the whole mess. Quite a few of the "new" requests I found were for long, featured or very good articles in German, by the way. I just don't have the time or energy to do much with them right now. It took me most of the day to proofread your article!

Here are a few comments:

The table in the upper right looks a little rough. Will you be fixing it up any more?

In English, as compared with German, you can't start a sentence with a digit. So you can't say something like "19% of the people are short." If something like that happens, you have to spell out the number, like "Nineteen percent of the people are short." The articles had three sentences like that. I re-worded the first one, but then just spelled out the percentages for the other two. You might keep that in mind in your other translations.

I have no idea what a chapel parish is. Maybe someone else will someday fix it.

As for the rotbewehrtes bird, I don't know what it means, either. I thought it might have something to do with the bird or with heraldry, but I didn't see anything promising on either the English or the German pages for either subject, so I left it alone. Again, maybe someone with fix it someday.

I don't know what to do about articles that talk about education. A grammar school in the US is another term for primary school (for the younger kids), but in British, it's a secondary school. On the other hand, a high school in American is a secondary school, while a Hochschule in German is a university! Then there's the German Gymnasium, which is a very different thing compared with a gymnasium (a place for sports). In short, I changed the terms you used for the educational things in the article. I have no idea at all what "sixth form" is. Even if you have to use British English (or American English, for that matter), I figure the article should be understandable for everybody who reads English. I try to go with things like primary school, secondary school, university, and hope that everyone can understand them. You might want to take a look and make sure I didn't mess things up.

So between your article and another one I did for a person who had translated a German article and asked for help on the wp:pnt page (not the right place!), I haven't done much on cleaning up the backlog today. (OK, so you and someone else proofread five of my articles today!) Now, are you feeling guilty yet? :-) Good!!!

I still have several articles needing proofreading. I have all the stuff listed on my Wiki user page, if you ever feel the need to proofread, by the way. :-) They are:

Of these, a few are pretty easy. F60 has already been checked over technically by a German guy who is familiar with the things and it has been categorized by someone else. The Trampofoil is very short. Yes, I took some data from the German and some data from the Danish articles, but I don't really think it needs much more than a quick polish. For 100 Great Paintings, I don't expect anyone to check the long list of paintings, since they were back-translated from German into English and I then tried to look up their usual English names on Wikipedia. It's just the text, though admittedly I changed the order of the sections, since this article is supposed to be about the English TV show.

So ... if you feel like it sometime ... that's what's currently waiting for some kind soul to proofread them.

Have you picked your next magnum opus yet?

I also have a hard time not sticking so very closely to the original German when I translate. It is quite an effort for me. I do find it interesting when I'm proofreading something to see the different styles of translating. For some, I can pretty much word-for-word follow along (of course, in a much different word order!) and for others, I have to read a German sentence and then read the translated sentence and then decide if it gets across the same idea. I don't generally try to re-arrange the translation unnecessarily; if it gets the idea across, good! (I think the Wiki article on Translation has some interesting comments about the tradeoffs between a literal translation and a more free translation. Either directon can be easily overdone, so it's a balance.)

As for being a "creature of habit", I do the same thing! I keep getting the same comments back from the guy who I usually talk into proofreading my translations of books on Kloeppeln. So I often end up looking up many words, even if I think I know what they mean, just in case this is one of those words. :-) Sooner or later, I figure I'll get the idea!

BTW, someone asked for a translation of a new article today, which pushed the last template too much. I had to quickly proofread something to get it off the page, so there would be enough room again. :-) I want to get rid of that extra page as soon as I can, but it seems to go so slowly.

Hanover City Hall

I'm thinking about doing the article about the Neues Rathaus (Hannover). It's not very long and looks like fun -- and it's now a red link so there's nothing to merge. :-) But none of the six pictures in the German article are in Commons. Can you take a look and see if any/all of them can be put there, and then move them, if they can be, please? The pictures look really toll!

It looks like this is another one that was (partly) done by someone and then the request template simply deleted from the translations page. It's a red link in the template because the page was translated under a different name ( New City Hall (Hanover) ). This shorter article does have a couple of pictures in it, but not all the ones from the German page.

I'm still interested in doing this one and I may even try to get it done tonight. If you can take a look at the pictures, it would be wonderful.

I noticed that, while on New Page Patrol, you recently changed the word "Italian" into the link "[[Italia]]n." Since this is the English Wikipedia, we like to use English in article titles, so [[Italy|Italian]] would be a more appropriate link. In fact, as it happens, Italia is a disambiguation page as you can see by following the link, so it requires a user to follow two links, instead of one, to find the relevant article. I was surprised to find the actual translated text for Flurzwang in the request template itself. I was wondering where it was, since it wasn't posted in the article, but then I found it. There's actually an existing article that links to it, so it's not even an orphan.

Please check out Overline especially carefully, since there are several things there that I don't really know much about (if you decide to proofread it). F60 and 100 Great Paintings are still there, as well as the two new ones, if you feel the desire.

Servus! I looked at the first of the German translation templates that seems to be displaying incorrectly. The template itself hasn't been edited in months, and the German page hasn't been edited since yesterday (except by me). I'll check out the rest of the problems, but I don't know what's happening at this point. Do you happen to know if they are using the new software that they're working on or something? It will take a bit of work to fix up the templates, although there are only a few of them. OK, I'll take a look at your new translation in a little while. Would you like to look at Walter Ehrlich? He came up on wp:pnt a little while ago. He appears to be a rather controversial person (non-notable? AfD? etc.) Someone posted a paragraph about him in German and a longer list of his writings which was then transwikied to DE. I decided to translate it for the EN site, too. The "Werke" section in the German site is actually a subset of the "Bibliographie" section, so I omitted it.

As for the templates, none of the bad ones has been changed recently. If you're not having problems, it could be that Winzigweich has once again decided to auto-magically download updates to my machine that I didn't want or ask for which messed up the display. I'm currently working on Queichheim (apparently a very bad, but short(!), Babelfish translation), which is one of the bad templates. The other bad templates are: Nietzsche-Archiv and VfB Stuttgart. For whatever reason, using "too" seems informal to me, so I usually change it to "also" -- though I don't know that I've ever seen that written or anything. I'm not so sure I agree that linen testers being used to test fabrics is no longer done. I have several linen testers for the purpose of -- counting the threads in linen! (or more precisely, to look at samples of old laces more closely). The number of articles on the Overflow page that still don't fit on the main page is getting very low. About 190 pages seem to fit on the main German translation page without transclusion problems, though I like to have some room for someone to add a new suggestion or two, too, so I haven't put them all there yet. The number 190 was obtained empirically and may even be different with the new software. (I did end up fixing the broken templates yesterday, since the new software seemed to be back again.) Thus, I don't have to aim for getting 3-5 articles off the translation page per day, as I had done before (though I can't stop clearing stuff off either - there will still be 190 to go, once everything fits again!)

Suggestions

While I have been looking for a German-English translator to help with some articles, I should advise you that just translating German article into English is a great service, the English wiki has more stringent guidelines for verifiability so it will be necessary to include more than just a listing of books. Check this out. More specific sources are required especially for higher quality articles. Have a look at Postage stamps of Ireland, our only FA to see what I mean by verifiable references. Both the Lovrenc Košir and Edwin Müller articles need some work to inprove the references and the English needs some copyediting in Lovrenc Košir as some it does not translate well.

I would prefer to see more work being done on some of the main topics that are lacking, such as, Stamp collecting, Philately, and individual country article that are not even a stub, rather than on small biographies, but, don't get me wrong, all work is good. If you are willing, I would like to work on Flugpost, a German FA, because the English Airmail article is rather poor but sources, both online and printed, will be needed. Thank you for your advice. I already noticed that there are not that stringent guidelines for the references in German WP, but I don't see another possibility to add references other than the German ones to the articles. I only have a few philatelistic books, but none dealing with common topics, they all focus on special fields.

TLR 2

Hello Tirkfl -

One of the "recovered" translation templates which is still on the Overflow page is the one on TLR 2. I don't know anything about this thing. Since you are a pharmacist, perhaps you can evaluate it a bit. The talk page on the German article says (from one person) that the article is completely wrong. I have no way to judge that. The English article also seems like it has a lot of information.

Is it worthwhile trying to translate it? (No, not me, but somebody someday.) If not, I can set it to Completed and be done with it. If it looks worthwhile, I can leave it on the translation page.

New article

Your recent new article Sheet of stamps seems rather confusing and many of the statements don't make any sense to me, or are inaccurate. Firstly I would retitle as Stamp sheet but I don't know what to do with the rest of it. Many of the descriptions really sound like translations from a foreign language, which of course they are. Please list the problematic descriptions and other confusing statements at the article's talk page. Then we can go through point after point. That is the problem with translations (at least with literal ones), the article is totally clear and understandable in one language, but not in another. The whole thing just reads so inaccurately and badly. For a start, the lead 2 sentences are totally confusing and inaccurate. It just does not make sense and where does se-tenant come into it? Severeal of the terms you have translated are not known to me - I don't even know what they are supposed to be. I'm sorry but I cannot go through it sentence by sentence. To me the whole concept as translated is just inaccurate or misleading in English probably due to specialised terms only used in German philately and not in English philately. Perhaps this article is supposed to be for what might be termed a "uncut press sheet" like those discussed here. This page might also be useful to determine what we are really trying to describe. The German article deals with all kinds of sheets, but first it refers to the printing sheet ("press sheet" as in the first article you have mentioned). Then it emphasises the distinction of the press sheet and the counter sheet, which then is the main focus of the article. Maybe we should split up the article into these two different terms. Baden 9 Kreuzer error

You might be interested to know that David Feldman is auctioning a unique unused example of the Baden 9 Kreuzer error next month. It has an estimate of €1–1.5 million. It is in the Rarities of the World catalogue and also has its own individual catalogue with lots of background. Both catalogues are available from this page on the company website. Protein/gene stubs

As the edit summaries say, it's stub-sorting, due to the enormously oversized state of Category:protein stubs. This scheme was well-flagged in advance. What precisely do you find "annoying" about it? Alai (talk) 23:24, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Firstly, please reply at my talk page, not my bot's. Secondly, please don't revert these edits at all (especially if you find doing so annoying). The protein stubs were preposterously oversized, are still oversized, and this is the scheme for sorting them that was agreed. If you have a better idea, or indeed any other idea whatsoever for dealing with this vast number of protein/gene stubs, please propose it in the appropriate venues, don't just start drifting back to the previous, unsatisfactory, status quo. These articles are all categorised as genes (as well as proteins), which is why that scheme was proposed, an why the bot's re-sorting them on that basis. I would not be opposed to a wording change on the stub type to something like "gene, or protein by chromosome number", or something on those lines, if that would address your concerns. Edits to Typography

Hi Tirkfl, thanks for all your good edits to Typography. A question about some of the spelings. Why are you converting spellings to BE? Presumably this means British English. Any particular reason for that choice? There is such a thing as British English with Oxford spellings, which happens to handle words like "digitize", "specialized" etc, the same way the Americans do, with a "z".

Why I advocate BE Oxford / American spellings: 1) They make sense because they follow pronunciation of such words; 2) Until now (5 years) it hasn't been an issue for the article. That is, nobody else has tried to spell the words you've changed using "s" instead of "z". You're the first editor to make these changes across the board.

By a reasonable guestimate the lesser portion of WP's readers would be Britons, Australians and New Zealanders who use BE "s" spellings, while the greater portion of our readers use and expect the British Oxford / American "z" spellings.

The best way to determine this is to examine which spellings are in use at Wikipedia. Here are some stat searches:
