Poem[edit]

Chapel Hill is my home. We have the Dean Dome.

We live in the Thrill, We often chill.

This poem is awful, but maybe you'll ROFL.

Props for that man... Jay 22:39, 9 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Czechoslovak vs. Czechoslovakian[edit]

Czechoslovakian is a noun, Czechoslovak is an adjective. ≈Tulkolahten≈≈talk≈ 22:13, 8 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly, I was unaware. Chalk up another bit of knowledge to Wikipedia! Tiger Khan (talk) 00:13, 9 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, thanks for you contribution to the article. I've looked over the source, and the information is well attributed. I'm concerned though that the text added constitutes original research in that the author of the piece wasn't intending to criticize Paleolithic-style diets. I'm open to discussing it. Cheers. --Phenylalanine (talk) 02:23, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it may not totally pass muster (by the original research test), but it's definitely a valid point in that if humans can evolve to metabolize milk for their entire lifetimes in only 5-8,000 years, it stands to reason that we've evolved (at least mostly) to handle grains. Perhaps not refined sugars, but grains nonetheless. I'll look around for more information perhaps. Thanks for the heads-up though. Tiger Khan (talk) 02:30, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is definitely a valid criticism. My understanding is that advocates believe that, while populations like Europeans may have developed some adaptations to grains, other constituents of cereals remain hazardous for human health, like lectins.

hip hyphen hop[edit]

I better bring this here lest someone shout WP:FORUM at me :)

Looking at books I have to hand, 5 use the hyphen, 4 omit it, and one uses hiphop! Looking at some of the hip hop or hip hop/lifestyle magazines, The Source, XXL, Wax Poetics and Hip-Hop Connection use it; Vibe, the now sadly defunct ego trip, and the underground Murder Dog don't or didn't. I think we'd all agree that the important thing is to have a standard and stick to it.

It's interesting looking at TUF-KAT's other suggestions, that I often use MC when "rapper" would be ungainly. By 1976, with his MCs The Furious Five, Flash could play to a packed Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan. Or, the MCs of the former two groups, KRS-One and Chuck D, pushed "message rap" towards black activism and so on. Here even something as imprecise as "frontmen" would be preferable to "rappers". It seems there are cases where the choice between rapper and some other term is not straight one.

Oh well, just some musings. :P I hope you were happy with my further refactor of your organization of the merger discussion, btw. 86.44.17.205 (talk) 20:56, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. I agree that since it's now a standard, we shouldn't mess with it. And thanks for the additional info. I'm not as well versed in hip-hop (I can't help myself, that's how I've always written it) literature as I'd like to be.
The merger is indeed a good idea, so any reorganization that makes debate/consensus easier to achieve is good. Tiger Khan (talk) 18:59, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The writing on hip hop is in fact really disappointing overall. If I were to recommend just one book, it would be Peter Shapiro's Rough Guide to Hip-Hop, an opinionated, entertaining and impressively comprehensive A to Z masquerading as a slim coffee table book. Brian Coleman's book on some classic albums, Check the Technique, is also worth a look; Classic Material (ed. Oliver Wang) is a similar idea, but attempts to cover more than twice the ground in a slimmer volume, and suffers for it somewhat.
Serious historical overviews are few and far between. Jeff Chang's Can't Stop Won't Stop isn't perfect, but is up to date and the most useful substitute for fascinating but dated earlier books by David Toop and Steven Hager.
Two very different but both wonderful books that are probably only good for hopeless rap dorks but that I can't leave without mentioning, are ego trip's Book of Rap Lists and Brian Cross's 1993 look at L.A. hip hop, It's Not About A Salary. 86.44.29.81 (talk) 02:35, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CNET report on Wikipedia accuracy[edit]

Hey, saw your message on my talk page and am happy to engage in a little discussion on my views. I personally do not feel the findings of the CNET article you showed my are very meaningful. We do not know how many articles they chose or at what state of completion they were at. If they chose some of wikipedia's more polished articles, then the results would be drastically skewed compared to wikipedia's articles as a whole. Since we do not have an editorial board, there is no standrad accuracy review procedure, and it is therefore impossible to extrapolate the reliability of wikipedia on the whole by looking at a few articles. I do believe, however, that since I wrote my essay a few years back that things are looking up for wikipedia in terms of reliability on major topics, as more comprehensive sourcing is making the site a good stockpile of basic factual information.

That said, I still doubt its general utility because what I believe to me a misreading of the NPOV policy has led authors to give equal weight to trivial and generally disregarded theories and events in an attempt to portray a subject in a "balanced" manner. Furthermore, I also believe that the drive to article bloat, not just in terms of length but also in terms of dumping information into an article without an organizational scheme that highlights the most important points of a topic, still presents a barrier to wikipedia's usefulness even as certain portions of it become more accurate. Be interested to hear your thoughts on this issue as well. Indrian (talk) 12:35, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
