Hello and welcome to Wikipedia!

I've tidied up the "Is weight training safe for children?" section because it's had quite a few additions, and it got a bit confusing. I used your reference to replace another one that was less clear.

It's great to see someone else working on articles in the weight training category. I've written a few articles on this subject, but it's still a rather neglected area of Wikipedia, and there are many more articles that could be written.

Have fun! GeorgeStepanek\talk 06:17, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

re Weight training and old age[edit]

Hmmm. You reckon oldies can't regain muscle mass through weight training? GeorgeStepanek\talk 08:39, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The original wording was "reverse the process of muscle loss" - to me this implies totally; the minor change was to reflect the fact the older people have much reduced lean body mass potential as result of (hormonally mediated) increased protein catabolism that comes with old age. Hence even with solid training and nutrition the potential for protein accretion just isnt the same as it was 40 years ago for this person. So it is not neccessarily the case they will be able to regain/prevent all the muscle mass loss, just minimise this effect via weight training/nutrition. hope this explains what i was getting at. I agree with what you've explained here, but I'm not sure the new wording reflects this fully. I'd like it to suggest that oldies can regain some of their previous functional strength through weight training. Would it be OK if I phrased it like this? GeorgeStepanek\talk 04:43, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I would say functional strength would be easier to increase than LBM, although i'm not really sure to what extent neuromuscular abilities decline with age - but sure reword it. what i do know is that net protein balance declines significantly with age, there's lots of research being done on leucine supplementation to go some way toward combatting this. Disgraced athletes[edit]

Have also put this on MY talk page:

OK but I think it is very apt for Christie who had been held as such a hero - surely disgraced means they were once held in high regard, and then fell from grace? This describes Christie exactly. Robsteadman 17:11, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Crack addicts and police officers[edit]

hey there... what happenned is that a vandal moved Police officer to Crack addict. Unfortunately, you moved the article back by copy and pasting the contents (rather than using the move page function) which means the edit history would have been lost. I thus reverted the content of "police officer" (now wrongly at "crack addict") back to the police officer content, and listed it for an admin to move back to "police officer" merging the edit histories. I see an admin has now sorted it, and the police officer article is back as it should be. Hope that clarifies things! UkPaolo/talk 22:31, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS: you might like to read WP:MM to see how to properly move a page (for instance how to have moved "crack addict" back to "police officer". As I said above, the reason you can't just copy and paste the page content is that the edit history would be lost and (per the link I just gave you): "The GFDL requires acknowledgement of all contributors, and editors continue to hold copyright on their contributions unless they specifically give up this right." hope this helps, and thanks for trying to sort it out! World's Smallest Political Quiz userbox[edit]

You may be interested in User:Audacity/Userboxes/WSPQ, which is a replacement for the old Political Chart userbox. The new userbox takes the two variables (economic and personal freedom), calculates which political alignment they place you into (Statist, Libertarian, Liberal, Centrist, or Conservative), and links your userpage to the appropriate category.
