Unbundling the tools
Hi Sonia. You said yourself that you would probably regret this. I though we had buried the hatchet, but unfortunately, at least in my opinion, I believe you might again have demonstrated that you may still possibly have a penchant for taking things out of context and/or putting an unintended spin on other editors' syntax. - Hatchet re your RfA long since buried on my part, although I'm not sure if your "again" is meant to allude to my having misrepresented you both now and at that occasion. - We're not really in conflict with each other, we just have different opinions on things, but I do feel that where I am concerned, you misunderstand what I say, and because you are generally a very sensible person, othesr tend to trust your judgement and pile-on. I don't know how you interact with others, but I would imagine that you are a very friendly and helpful person. If you are concerned with the current situation at RfA - and I assume you are because you post on RfA and adminship related forums - the offer to join the RFA2011 project is genuine, with the proviso that its active contributors are positively engaged with any suggestions that can reasonably be examined. There is a lot of hard work being done there, and any comments that the project is not getting anything done are inaccurate - do take a look and browse its numerous pages, there has never been such a concentrated and focused effort to research the RfA issues in the entire history of Wikipdia. I certainly laud Dcoetzee's initiative, but I defend the right to point out where I believe it's the wrong solution to the wrong problems, and that the RfC itself is flawed. I also feel very strongly that such proposals would have more impact and exposure if they came with the support of a well established Wikipedia project. All that said, if you feel that you and I cannot work together, let me give give us both the advice that I give to others, by suggesting that we no longer reply to each other's comments on project pages, unless of course, we are supporting each other's views. - You're right in that we're not necessarily in conflict. Poor choice of wording there. However, I think we agree that our different opinions, goals and ways of approaching things mean that working together constructively would be quite a challenge. With this in mind, your observation that people tend to follow my lead seems to back up my point that my participation in RFA2011 would create discord among the well-intentioned people working there to improve the RfA process. I don't see why it should be a black-and-white choice between "join us or speak to me no more"; I'm perfectly happy for us to just go on our separate ways and interact as any two editors would, and for you to reply to (or misinterpret, for that matter) my comments whenever you like.
- That said... since I'm apparently "generally a very sensible person" who has the trust of the community, perhaps you could reconsider your stance on Dcoetzee's proposal. - I'm afraid there is no way I can change my stance on Decotezee's proposal for all the reasons I have already stated, the summary of which is that I feel it does not address any of the problems with admidminship or its electioral process. The fact the the RfC itself is flawed is a Nebensache. Subjectively, I didn't go through hell week to embark on a course that would make access to the tools any easier for trophy collectors or power seekers. It should be clear by now that my mission is to clean up the current process from the lies, deceit, incivility, bullying, and unreflected voting that has all but destroyed what is otherwise - in theory at least - the best system that is in place. Until some proposals to make it a more hygienic environment that will be made this year by RFA2011 have been rejected by the community, I see no need to examine alternatives. That said, there is nevertheless a section in the project (which I do not subscribe to) at WP:RFA/RADICAL that discusses and suggests other methods. The vast resources and research that have been done by the RfA project are free for anyone to consult, as is the experience of its adherents and I have never, ever, even slightly hinted in the vaguest sense "join us or speak to me no more". The day I utter such an abominable construct will be the day I gladly lay down my tools, retire from Wikipedia, and leave it to rot in the hands of people who hate younger editors and defend the use of personal attacks and filthy language. Article Feedback Tool - notes and office hours
Hey guys! Another month, another newsletter.
First off - the first bits of AFT5 are now deployed. As of early last week, the various different designs are deployed on 0.1 percent of articles, for a certain "bucket" of randomly-assigned readers. With the data flooding in from these, we were able to generate a big pool of comments for editors to categorise as "useful" or "not useful". This information will be used to work out which form is the "best" form, producing the most useful feedback and the least junk. Hopefully we'll have the data for you by the end of the week; I can't thank the editors who volunteered to hand-code enough; we wouldn't be where we are now without you.
All this useful information means we can move on to finalising the tool, and so we're holding an extra-important office hours session on Friday, 6th January at 19:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. If you can't make it, drop me a note and I'll be happy to provide logs so you can see what went on - if you can make it, but will turn up late, bear in mind that I'll be hanging around until 23:00 UTC to deal with latecomers :).
Things we'll be discussing include:
- The design of the feedback page, which will display all the feedback gathered through whichever form comes out on top.
- An expansion of the pool of articles which have AFT5 displayed, from 0.1 percent to 0.3 (which is what we were going to do initially anyway)
- An upcoming Request for Comment that will cover (amongst other things) who can access various features in the tool, such as the "hide" button.

Article Feedback Tool - things to do
Hey guys! A couple of highly important things to do over the next few weeks:
- We've opened a Request for Comment on several of the most important aspects of the tool, including who should be able to hide inappropriate comments. It will remain open until 20 January; I encourage everyone with an interest to take part :).
- A second round of feedback categorisation will take place in a few weeks, so we can properly evaluate which design works the best and keeps all the junk out :P. All volunteers are welcome and desired; there may be foundation swag in it for you!

I also asked a friend to try to make one, but when he tried to use the last season's SVG version it blew up on him because the file was corrupted or something. - He said when he saved the SVG, the colors got all switched around. - Hey, no probs. Reading is certainly fine! If you're interested in any of the scripts I showed you, the link-popups etc, I can show you how to get those just to make reading easier. Re editing, the key rule is not to feel obliged to do so! If you see a typo that annoys you, fix it; if there's something you want to add, by all means do, but the main thing is that you're having fun or feeling good about it.

You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. Hey guys!
Thanks to all of you who have commented on the New Page Triage talkpage. If you haven't had a chance yet, check it out; we're discussing some pretty interesting ideas, both from the Foundation and the community, and moving towards implementing quite a few of them :).
In addition, on Tuesday 13th March, we're holding an office hours session in #wikimedia-office on IRC at 19:00 UTC (11am Pacific time). If you can make it, please do; we'll have a lot of stuff to show you and talk about, including (hopefully) a timetable of when we're planning to do what. Writing & Rhetoric II
Hi Sonia, I wanted to leave you a note to say thank you for your help with my class. The students really valued your input and I think the project went really well. I also want to ask you if you'd be willing to serve as online ambassador for a course I'm teaching beginning March 26. This would not involve commenting on drafts as in the last class as I want to try having online ambassadors only available for student questions/emails, rather than require students to submit a draft. In other words, it wouldn't be nearly as involved, but you would be available just in case students needed help. What do you think?

New Page Triage newsletter
Hey all!
Thanks to everyone who attended our first office hours session; the logs can be found here, if you missed it, and we should be holding a second one on Thursday, 22 March 2012 at 18:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. I hope to see you all there :).
In the meantime, I have greatly expanded the details available at Wikipedia:New Page Triage: there's a lot more info about precisely what we're planning. If you have ideas, and they aren't listed there, bring them up and I'll pass them on to the developers for consideration in the second sprint. And if you know anyone who might be interested in contributing, send them there too!

Article Feedback Tool newsletter
Sorry for the radio silence, guys :). I just wanted to let you know that we're planning on starting a new round of hand coding, which you can sign up for here. This will be the final round (honest!), and is basically because we found some really interesting results from the last round that blew our collective mind. It's important to check that they weren't a fluke, though, and so a bit more work is needed.
If you have any questions, drop a note on my talkpage - and if you know anyone who would be interested in participating, please tell them about it! We'll be holding an IRC training session in #wikimedia-office at 18:00 UTC on the 21st of March to run through the tool and answer any questions you may have. help triage some feedback
Hey guys.
I appreciate this isn't quite what you signed up for, but I figured as people who are already pretty good at evaluating whether material is useful or not useful through Special:NewPages, you might be interested :). Over the last few months we've been developing the new Article Feedback Tool, which features a free text box. it is imperative that we work out in advance what proportion of feedback is useful or not so we can adjust the design accordingly and not overwhelm you with nonsense.
This is being done through the Feedback Evaluation System (FES), a tool that lets editors run through a stream of comments, selecting their value and viability, so we know what type of design should be promoted or avoided. We're about to start a new round of evaluations, beginning with an office hours session tomorrow at 18:00 UTC. If you'd like to help preemptively kill poor feedback, come along to #wikimedia-office and we'll show you how to use the tool. If you can't make it, send me an email at okeyes

Hey, i saw your comment on my post. I just wanted to know how you make your own wiki? And also this game is only being made by me and it is going to take 17 months to complete, but all the links are good, and not bad. So how do you make your own wiki? Like Skyrim wiki or Minecraft wiki or something like that? Seeing as its a game i would like one. Also, ive heard of a server thing known as Bukkit and they havent been around for to long, and they have already got a Wiki. But anyway, i was just hoping i could have some help, and how could i improve my post?

- Hi. There are many places you can make a separate wiki, as in a separate website, like http://elderscrolls.wikia.com . I'd recommend Wikia, but I'm not hugely experienced with other wiki hosting sites—alternatively, if you're technically proficient and have your own server, setting up a wiki on your own server is something you can do. Wikia is easier and probably easier for other people to find though.
- If by "wiki" you mean a Wikipedia article, it really does need more references: Wikipedia doesn't go by how new things are, but by how famous or important they are. That is, if something has made the news widely and received a lot of attention, it generally will have an article; if something has been written about in many books or academic journals, it likewise generally will have an article. If your game has either of these, then these can be used as sources for the article about it. If not, it probably should not have an article. Please see our notability guideline for more information, and this quick page for info about reliable sources.
