User page and categories[edit]

Oh, and I'd like to commend you for not reverting this edit. You'd have been wholly right to have done so, of course, but then I'm a strong believer in not reverting other's changes back to one's own (without discussion, anyway), and also in defending each other and not oneself. That's a good policy, and I think I could learn from that myself tbh. I'm not sure its always possible to avoid reverting back to your own edits (and obvious vandalism is a good example of an exception to the rule). But its certainly food for thought. The only reason I had moved the article to the new title in the first place was that there seemed to be a kind of concensus about it in the talk page.. I have known of the origins of the word for a good many years, and I've never spelled it other than crack (the few times I've had to write it down that is!). What does interest me is at what point it was adopted into the Irish language? A few webpages I've read about it suggest some time in the 1980s... unfortunately I'm not at Coleraine university any more, otherwise I would have access to a wealth of knowledge on the subject (that campus was a languages mainstay - particularly Irish). --Mal 08:17, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jimmy Stewart[edit]

Hi,

I noticed you added Jimmy Stewart back to the List of Northern Irish people article. I can find no mention of any Northern Irish decent relating to him; his biography makes no mention of it, apart from a "Scots-Irish decent" tag at the top. Did he consider himself Irish-American? If so, does he claim decent through his mother or father? Perhaps we can add this instead of simply stating "County Antrim" (which is rather confusing)? Hi Martin. He was US-born, but his family lived in Antrim before moving to the USA. I honestly can't remember where, but I saw the info about him on a couple of websites recently when I had initially added him. I know older members of my family had always spoken about how him and John Wayne's families had come from Northern Ireland (well - Ulster I suppose, since they left before NI came into being!).
When I added John Wayne and Sam Neill, I put in County Antrim for the former and Omagh for the latter because that was the way I had been adding all the other people - name, then place of origin. Actually, I think I had put down that Wayne was a "proud Scots-Irishman" because I remember seeing him interviewed by Michael Parkinson or someone, and he had said how proud he was of his heritage. Someone changed that though I think. I just thought it was handy to note whereabouts their families (or the person themselves) had originated. --Mal 18:43, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Mal, reading the info on the Jimmy Stewart page, its says that his parents owned a hardware store, and that it had been in the family for several generations. This led me to believe that his family had been resident in the US for quite a wee while. No matter though; if his family are from Antrim, he deserves his place on the list.
I'm afraid it was I who deleted the note that John Wayne was a "proud Scots-Irishman"; it just seemed somewhat out of step with how the information was presented elsewhere on the page (if I'm ever fortunate enough to find my way onto the page though, feel free to add "Martin Robinson, confused County Down man"...lol). Perhaps if you feel that the fact John Wayne was proud of his heritage warrants a mention, you could add it in an appropriate place on the John Wayne article (and/or add it back to the article)? I'm not adverse to documenting the geographical origins of people's families, but for someone who's clearly not from Northern Ireland, I think "family originated in County Antrim" works better than simply "County Antrim". lol at the "confused County Down man"! I think you made a good decision regarding the Wayne edit - what I had added was indeed out of step. I have to say though that at the time I had added him, I was still finding my legs with the article itself, which I think is one of the ones I created.
As for your suggestion, yeah - something like what you have written above "family from County Antrim" sounds good to me. I'd love to be more specific - 99% of the other people there have specific towns, villages or cities cited. --Mal 16:29, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Guess who's back again? This is really getting boring. As usual I must appeal to people to revert this guy's changes on the PIRA article and also on the Provisional IRA campaign 1969-1997 article. I've had enough of this guy at this stage and am going to report his activities. Have a look at what he put inot the Henry McDonald article before I got rid of it. Aside completely from being rubbish, what he wrote was actually libelous. Dunno mate. For a start, I haven't found the need for a Northern Irish articles articles(!) page yet. I might have a look at the equivalent page on the Beatles Proj and see what its all about. I named it 'Northern Irish articles because it wasn't only intended to be about Northern Ireland.. but about Northern Irish 'things' as well.. if you understand me. I edit-summarised a few of your articles vis a vis where they originated from, without noticing you'd given credit on the project page! (with undue prominence really, heh!). Sorry about that. Didn't mean to be a dick.

Mmm... I still think you ought to rename it "Northern Ireland". That wouldn't prevent you from including articles about NI people in your Project scope. You'll also need Project categories, but I refrained from creating them myself because of the naming question. Welcome to the inaugural issue of The Beatles WikiProject's newsletter! We hope that this newsletter will help members—especially those who may be unable to keep up with some of the rapid developments that tend to occur—find new things to do within the project that they may wish to participate in.

Premiership TV Rights[edit]

lol SteveRwanda - its based on the mythical figure. The username is usually taken up by others, so the first time this happened I added 'random' numbers to the end so I could keep the name. The only reason I chose 747 was because its pretty easy to remember.
Bit of history though - my first nickname on the internet back around 1991, was "Frodo". I changed this to "Hobbit" and I was known for a long time under that nick.. in some very popular Bulletin Board systems - eBBSes. Obviously those nicknames became increasingly popular again with the advent of the new Lord of the Rings films. Not one to particularly follow trends, I felt a change was needed. Cúchulainn was a common one, so I opted for the character's slightly less well-known original name instead.

Categories in userspace[edit]

Hi! I noticed that in your scratchpad / draft / alternative article User:Setanta747/Uluti you have the categories still activated, so it's showing up in Category:Irish mythology and a few others. Could I suggest that you deactivate them (by putting a colon before 'Category' in the link) until such time as the article is in the mainspace rather than the userspace? (As per WP:CG, "If you copy an article to your user namespace (for example, as a temporary draft or in response to an edit war) you should decategorize it".) "British aboriginals" in Ireland[edit]

Hi. Thanks for asking your question. I'm not sure I explained it on the England talk page properly as I have not looked at it in a while. But yes - people from the Republic of Ireland can be described as being aboriginal British. The origin of the word is older than both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, and the original form of the word was used to describe the inhabitants of these islands as a collective people. --Mal 00:28, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

William of Orange and Pope Innocent XI[edit]

I didn't mean to cause conflict (or portray my ignorance of the events that took place). I was only attempting to remove contradictory statements from wikipedia. For the Pope Innocent XI article states that there is no proof that he supported William of Orange. If you have information about this (and a source) your help would be most appreciated. F1 portal featured article[edit]

The F1 portal (in which I assume you have some degree of interest, as your name is listed on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Formula_One) is intended to have a regular rotation of a 'featured article'. I've swapped a few in and out over the last couple of months, but I think it would be better if there were more of a community attempt at deciding this, proposals, votes, that kind of thing. I noticed that in your userpage you said 'Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense, which translates to, "shame on him who thinks evil of it".' well.. a while back I emailed the United kingdom passport authority asking them what it meant, and they say it means "Evil be to who he who evil thinks"

NI projects[edit]

I see you mentioned about doing NI projects.. I'd certainly enjoy helping, but I'm not sure how I could. I may have picked up wrong but all the projects seem to be in county fermanagha? Considerable distance from Dundonald :P If there is anything more local to Belfast I'm sure I could probably help out. Well, as you live in Northern Ireland, I'm sure you have plenty of experience and knowledge of the place.. family members who work in certain areas or whatever. I can't see that everything in the project pages is about Fermanagh, but I'll have to have a look to see what you mean! The Northern Irish article project covers everything from politics, to Samson & Goliath, to the Ulster Fry, to George Best - everything and anything that is related to Northern Ireland or the Northern Irish people.
I noticed someone has left you a message on your talk page regarding your creation of the Gilnahirk article - that's the sort of thing that Wikipedia needs - articles that are missing, and articles that need improving or correction. Congrats on that one by the way. As for photography - yes.. if its ever handy for you to take pictures of locations in Belfast for example, for particular articles, I'll maybe come to you if I can't find any free images on the 'net. :)

Beatles News
  • Apple Corps v. Apple Computer. A case brought by Apple Corps against Apple Computer, regarding possible infringement of a previous agreement between the two parties in respect of distribution of music, was heard in a London High Court. The story made Wikipedia's front page due to a nomination by our own Kingboyk. The story had an amusing second wave in the news and on Wikipedia; be sure to read the article on Guy Goma if you missed it!
Project News
  • The Beatles article has been approved for inclusion in Wikipedia Version 0.5, making it one of the first 20 articles to be selected and the first in the Music category.
  • The hottest Project page this month has been Policy Talk, where some lively discussion has taken place regarding the (perennial) question of the capitalisation of the letter T in "The Beatles". After seeking the comments of Wikipedian third parties unrelated to the project, the proponents and opponents concluded that the current naming policy was correct. The discussion had the added bonus of bringing in some new members.
Member News
  • Project member (and "co-instigator" of The Beatles Project) Lar was made an Administrator. Project member Kingboyk (the other guilty party) has been awarded a Music Barnstar for his contributions, including his work within The Beatles Project, and has also stewarded the KLF article to Featured Article status this month. Sometimes-contributor ZincOrbie has also been awarded a Barnstar for his work on the Badfinger article. Congratulations to all!
Issue of the Month

The matter of the article History of the Beatles and the History section of the main article The Beatles continues to concern various editors, including DavidWBrooks and Vera, Chuck & Dave. Suggestions, comments, or help with the task would be much appreciated.

I work hard mate. If I did that, my hard drive would be absolutely littered. I like the organisation of Wikipedia. I like submitting short articles to which other editors can contribute straight away. Occasionally, I do put an article in my own userspace before submitting it as an (almost) complete article. But that's not generally how I work. I sometimes make a start to articles I have no intention of completing, if I feel there is a need for them.. and leave it to others to flesh them out. Sometimes, if an article I have created has sat around for weeks without any other additions, I will come back to them and flesh them out myself. I certainly don't expect them to be nominated for deletion two minutes after I have created them! --Mal 13:58, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Selected articles on Portal:F1[edit]

Hello again.

I dropped notes round a while back to those who have listed themselves at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Formula_One to ask for suggestions for selected articles on portal:Formula One. There was a pretty good response, both in terms of how it might work and of articles suggested. Damon Hill came out with the most support and was brought up to Good Article standard after a lot of work by Skully Collins and others before going on as the F1 portal selected article a couple of weeks ago. It is now at Featured Article Candidates as a Featured Article candidate (why not drop by and see if you can help polish it further?).

Several people who responded to the original request suggested that a monthly or bi-weekly 'Selected Article' could act as a catalyst for an improvement drive to get more articles up to a higher standard. Although it wasn't quite what I had in mind when I started, this seemed to work pretty well for the Damon Hill article, so I've drafted up a process for doing this more regularly. See Portal_talk:Formula_One/Management_of_selected_articles for details. Essentially the suggestion is that we vote for an article to improve every couple of weeks and at the end of the improvement process the article goes on the portal as the new 'Selected Article'. I'd be grateful for any comments on how this might work - I'm sure some of you are more familiar with things 'Wiki' than me - as well as your votes for the next candidate (by 16 July).

You may also want to help with the article Gilles Villeneuve, which was the next most popular after Damon Hill. The idea is to try and get it up to GA standard by 16 July and then put it on the portal as the 'Selected Article'. I hope you can help! 4u1e 4u1e 17:01, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • New article classification system, for our use and for Wikipedia 1.0. Very important and we need editor involvement. How can you help? Rate articles! It's easy:
    • Visit Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles/Article Classification and read about how to grade.
    • Visit Category:Unassessed Beatles articles and select an article to review.
    • After deciding what grade it should have, modify the invocation of {{WPBeatles}} on the talk page to add parms. The template itself gives you the parameters to use. For example, change {{WPBeatles}} to {{WPBeatles|B|Low}} if you think it's a low-importance, B-class article. Save your changes and make sure the talk page is now showing the ratings.
    • Click on the link in the template to edit the /comments subpage and explain why you rated the article the way you did. Don't forget to sign with ~~~~. Save that too.
    • Questions? Ask Kingboyk or Lar for help.
  • Want to stay up on new project developments? Watchlist all of the WikiProject pages plus The Beatles and each of the 4 members, to get a feel for what's happening. Also monitor and regularly review Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/The Beatles articles by quality log. If an article is listed on there as "added", go check the article's history. If it's new since the Project began add it to the Project Log as a new article and up the counter by one :)

It was a bit of a struggle to get this month's newsletter done, as we did it without a lead editor. Hopefully, next month you'll jump in and be our lead editor. Big news is that WP:1.0 is coming along nicely and our article classification system has changed to conform to it.

Changing a Beatles article assessment[edit]

Hi Mal, nice to see you around. I rolled back your change to Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/The Beatles articles by quality/1 because that page is created automagically by Mathbot. What you need to do to change a rating is change the grade on the article's talk page and the bot will pick up the change when it runs overnight. Do what everyone else has done and pinch the work of Lar and myself! hehe. If you want to keep it simple (no bad thing), my {{WPKLF}} template does the basic job with no frills. Re: Featured portal[edit]

In general, the various featured *something* candidate pages work on a basis of all "actionable" objections being met. In effect, if there are any significant objections that aren't resolved, the candidacy will fail.

As far as getting more people to comment: given the small number of people who seem to be active on the portal candidate page, I think that getting more eyes there is a good thing. It's not a straight vote in any case, so there's little chance that this would actually constitute "canvassing for votes". Kirill Lokshin 00:15, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem Jaysscholar. I created it, and it was nominated for deletion on the grounds of being a "ridiculous sexist template", for some reason. I created a different template, and that template is no longer in use for any articles that I have edited.

Northern Irish terrorists[edit]

Hi Mal, is Category:Northern Irish terrorists a good idea? Who goes in and who doesn't? I can just imagine the revert wars! Most people like Gray, Davison and whoever else is added to the category will already be in the relevant paramilitary group category - IRA, UDA etc. Given this, is it not better to just categorise individuals under their paramilitary group, and let people make their own decision on their status? I saw the category 'British terrorists' and thought it was logical to include a separate one for Northern Irish ones, under the British supercategory. Actually, what prompted my creation of the category was the fact that, while looking up the 'pedia for some info, I noticed a few people listed in the 'Northern Irish people' cat, and thought it a bit odd that they (and others in that supercat) weren't sub-cat'ed. As for status .. for the terrorists, there is one category and for suspected or alleged terrorists, there is another one. --Mal 20:12, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

British Isles[edit]

Re British Isles. Where were you this last month, it was heavy at times, with point scoring and pov remarks thrown about like snuff at a wake. I watched it but didn't wade in. Nobody conquered the other side. Last thing that is needed now is some "newcomer" coming in, stiring the shit again. What's your purpose? Why not just put the page on watch, and then respond. Despite it being the lead news article of last month, there is still help required in the assessing of articles and the migrating of comments. Lar is willing to provide assistance to those unsure how to do this.

Project News
  • The Beatles article, the "Flagship" of the Project, is currently under review with regard to its Featured Article status. It is hoped that the review will identify those areas that need some(/lots of) remedial work, and that the Project participants and those editors who are involved in the the FA admin pages to can work together to "save" the status of the article.
    • At the moment there is some discussion as to why it has been listed, and what may be needed to help it retain its FA status. It may well be that some work is going to be required in formulating a plan of action, and then some more in achieving those aims.
    • The FA status is obviously quite important to the Project, and it would be appreciated if participants are able to provide assistance in keeping the article up to standard. The editors would be grateful if those persons receiving this Newsletter could spare some of their time, energy and brainpower in keeping this jewel in our crown in its proper place.
