Welcome to the MILHIST project[edit]
Hi, and welcome to the Military history WikiProject! As you may have guessed, we're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to military history.
A few features that you might find helpful:
- Our navigation box points to most of the useful pages within the project.
- The announcement and open task box is updated very frequently. You can watchlist it if you are interested, or you can add it directly to your user page by copying the following: {{WPMILHIST Announcements}}.
- Important discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
- The project has several departments, which handle article quality assessment, detailed article and content review, writing contests, and article logistics.
- We have a number of task forces that focus on specific topics, nations, periods, and conflicts.
- We've developed a style guide that covers article structure and content, template use, categorization, and many other issues of interest.
- If you're looking for something to work on, there are many articles that need attention, as well as a number of review alerts.
- The project has a stress hotline available for your use.

Wikipedia 3RR Shortcomings[edit]
I am dissapointed by Wikipedia's 3RR's implicit endorsement of discretionary reverts of good faith edits. I believe reverts are only useful in cases of clear vandalism - and should be strictly restricted to such. The current system discourages real collaboration. By allowing unsupported reverts, it encourages laziness, buck passing and ego driven power trips among editors. The 3RR encourages edit warriors to form "wikigangs" to harass newcomers (or those perceived as outside the "old-boy clique").
Instead of taking ownership and fixing a problem, the "revert junkie" would rather undo everything passing the "fix-it" buck back to the original editor. I wonder how many good intentioned people are driven away by these "wikiterrorists".

- I think many editors see WP:3RR as a target, rather than a violation, and in some respects WP:3RR and WP:AN3 encourage that view (in as much as they don't kick in until an editor crosses the line).
- However, reverting (once) is useful in terms of kicking off a discussion. Since the onus is on editors making a change to justify their change, reverting once is - IMHO - fine if other editors disagree. The problem arises when the two sets of editors then simply revert each other, "safe" in the knowledge that they probably won't be held to account for their conduct until they approach 3 reverts.
- To my mind, if editors focus on the "Five Pillars" (and in particular the 4th: it deals with civility, but includes consensus) they should be fine. The problem is when dealing with editors who either don't know about this aspect of Wikipedia, or simply don't care. It's difficult to deal with editors like this, but part of the 4th Pillar is assuming good faith. To my mind (and this is all IMHO...) that means firstly explaining policies, guidelines, and Wikipedia's behavioural norms to them.
- The editors I find difficult to deal with are those that simply don't communicate - many editors simply don't use talk pages at all. In most cases, though, there are ways round that problem - if an unregistered editor repeatedly makes erroneous changes to an article we can request that the article be "semi-protected" (so that only registered editors can edit it). This often "forces" the IP editor to discuss the issue. In more extreme cases editors who don't communicate can be blocked.
- I think in many ways the issues at "the 1952 article" are very, very manageable. There are several editors discussing issues, since yesterday there are several more, including a few admins. Issues seem to become less serious with many eyes on a problem.
- I mentioned yesterday WP:AN3: I probably should also have mentioned that it's part of a wider set of dispute resolution venues. Some of them are quite informal: WP:3O, for example, simply involves two editors in a disagreement getting a "third opinion" from a non-involved editor. Others are much more bureaucratic! They're all worth taking a look at, however. My main advice, though, would be to try and avoid needing dispute resolution - by discussing and reaching at a consensus.
- Hope this is useful - it's (mostly) just my opinion, and I'm just a regular, ordinary editor, so take what I say with a pinch of salt, season to your own taste, and enjoy!

- Thanks TFOWR. I'll propose a new 1RR-G (max 1 revert rule per day for good faith edits - possibly with 24hr autoblock when exceeded). If implemented, editors would be less tempted to click undo and less time would be needed for edit war arbitration. ScottPAnderson (talk) 14:10, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
Knock it off, both of you[edit]
Yesterday was a mess, and I ended up reporting two editors at WP:ANI. As a result the article is now move-protected.
Today is shaping up to be an equally large mess. Let me be absolutely clear what I mean by consensus and discussion: I mean discuss until you resolve your differences and then - and only then - edit. I do not mean "post on the talk page and then immediately edit or revert the article". I do not mean "carry on an inflammatory conversation by way of snarky edit summaries".
Yesterday's fiasco drew a lot of new editors - posts at ANI tend to achieve that. I suspect, too, that a number of admins are now carefully monitoring the article, not because they intend to edit it, but because they're concerned about the disruptive potential it poses. You can either demonstrate that you can both work collaboratively, or you can wait until the article is fully-protected, you're both topic-banned from Kenya topics, or you're both blocked. Working collaboratively gives you both some control over the article; the other options achieve the exact opposite.
It should be clear by now that if I initiate any form of dispute resolution - including posting at WP:ANI - I will name and shame all parties, myself included, and let smarter and cooler heads determine the best outcome. Please sort this out and don't force me - or someone else - to escalate this further.

- This is the edit in particular that concerned me. I don't personally feel edits/reverts during a discussion are helpful, and while I'm aware you're both doing it you asked me what you'd done. I agree there may well be "a worse wrong" and "a less worse wrong" here. I also don't really care. What I'm seeing is disruption - two editors bickering, editing, reverting each other.
- You don't have to take my advice. All I can do is offer advice - I have no special powers. My advice is that what happened yesterday, and what's happening today, is likely to be resolved by an admin with an itchy trigger finger who feels that blocking two editors will neatly avoid any allegation that the admin is partisan. If an admin goes down that route they won't get any argument from me.

- I know you have good intentions but this is leading nowhere. Clearly user:Sh33pl0re has achieved something here.
- Look, I have done nothing wrong. user:Sh33pl0re hurled serious insults and vulgarity at me several times today. At least one other editor immediately protested to his behavior. In addition user:Sh33pl0re made more than 10 unprovoked personal attacks against me to which more than 3 editors - including yourself objected (see his talk page). He then went on to delete valid material (your example) - which I reverted just *once*. My comments on his talk page have been gentle and accommodating. What have I done wrong? You cannot claim impartiality if you give user:Sh33pl0re's obviously disruptive actions the same weight as my good faith actions. If I am to be blocked for defending my innocence so be it. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. Invite to the African Destubathon[edit]
Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. For those of you who signed up to the North African contest, that will hopefully be held in the new year. March Madness 2017[edit]
G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:
- tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
- updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
- creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.
As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.
The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.
The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting[edit]
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. User group for Military Historians[edit]
Greetings,
"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

AfroCine: Join us for the Months of African Cinema in October![edit]

This is to introduce you to a new Wikiproject called AfroCine. This new project is dedicated to improving the Wikipedia coverage of the history, works, people, places, events, etc, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the carribbean, and the diaspora. If you would love to be part of this or you're already contributing in this area, kindly list your name as a participant on the project page here.
Furthermore, In the months of October and November, the WikiProject is organizing a global on-wiki contest and edit-a-thon tagged: The Months of African Cinema. The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which has been dedicated to improving contents that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.
This is a global online edit-a-thon, which is happening in at least 5 language editions of Wikipedia, including the English Wikipedia! Join us in this exciting venture, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section, if you haven't done so already.
On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing Users who are able to achieve the following:

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 1,500 articles created in over fifteen (15) languages! Hey y'all, the April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive begins at 00:01 UTC on April 1, 2021 and runs through 23:59 UTC on April 31, 2021. Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards.
