Bombay, India[edit]

Hi! As a new user, I imagine you're unfamiliar with Wikipedia policies and guidelines. One of those rules states that we should only have 1 article on any given topic. Thus, you should not be duplicating the information for Mumbai on other pages. Instead, each of those other pages is a "redirect", which means that if a user goes there with the Search box, the server automatically sends them to Mumbai. This is a key necessity of Wikipedia--otherwise, everytime we wanted to add some new info, we'd have to add it to every separate page. The redirects solve the problem of people finding what they're searching for without having unnecessary duplication. Please ask me on my talk page if you have any questions. Thanks. Responding to your comments on my page: The fact that some places still call it Bombay does not change the fact that Wikipedia has at least 2 policies that you're breaking by changing the article that way. First, is, under no situation do we ever allow more than one article on a topic. Note that if someone types "Bombay, India" into the search box, then they will be immediately be taken to Mumbai, so you don't have to worry about someone not being able to find it, even if they don't use the same search term. The second is that we always choose the name for a place based on its most common usage in English. Since Mumbai is both the official name and the most common one, we cannot and should not change the article title to Bombay. There are many many articles on Wikipedia that cover people, places, and things with more than one name. In order to make editing possible, we must choose one and only one name, and leave redirects (just like there is at Bombay and Bombay, India) so that people can find the right page. So please do not change that redirect or try to create an article with that name. Oh, and I added your page to my watchlist, so you can reply here and I'll see it. Response: I appreciate and agree with your idea. I have already used the redirect option for Bombay, India to Mumbai. What I am not able to agree with is the usage of a 'i' in small caps in the page title Bombay india. A large community has the same problem. e.g. When on an external website like facebook, someone trying to set his 'Current Hometown' to 'Bombay, India' is FORCED to use the link to 'Bombay india' http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bombay-india/108110679222334. This does not go down well with a large number of people. I request you to look into the matter and atleast change the title of Bombay india to 'Bombay, India'. This will content me and the community at large. Thanks for your time. Appreciate it. Satyarthster (talk)
But there is a page Bombay, India, and it redirects to Mumbai--if you type that into your search box above you'll see that it works just fine. So it looks like the page you already want exists. Perhaps the problem is with Facebook? Perhaps they don't allow commas? Actually, even more likely is that the way Facebook works, you have to link to the main article name, not to one of the redirects. In either case, the problem is not with Wikipedia, but with the way Facebook handles linking to Wikipedia pages. If you take a look at [1], you can see that all of those listed names redirect to Mumbai; you can verify each of those by typing them into the search box.
