Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! We would like to thank all who participated in this drive. Here is the end-of-drive report.

Participation

There were 58 editors who signed-up for this drive, of which 42 participated. This is a slight increase from the July 2011 drive participation, where 39 out of 50 people that signed up participated. Thank you to everyone!

Progress report

During the drive, we reduced the backlog by 146 articles, or by about 4%. Overall we did well, especially considering the exceptionally large number of articles that were tagged during September. Thus far we have reduced the copy edit backlog by 4854 articles, or by about 58%. If we keep up our current rate of copy editing, the backlog should be reduced by 65–70% by the end of this year. End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here. Barnstars will be handed out this week.

Once again, thank you for participating in the Guild's September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Our next drive will be in November, and we hope to see you there!

Thanks for you help with the September 2011 Move To Commons drive!

The September 2011 Move To Commons drive was a tremendous success! We blew away our main goal, and our secondary goal was 97% complete by the end. Thanks for doing your part! For transferring 225 files you earned The Special Barnstar, and for being #4 on the leaderboard you earned the Transfer to Commons Drive Leaderboard Barnstar. Sorry for the late reply. Unfortunately, I had to rush off to catch a flight to attend my grandmother's funeral. I thought I had checked every step but I must have missed one step. I'm now back but the next two weeks are extremely busy for me at work (I hope things will calm down after). I will be around during publication time but I hope that the articles are ready in time. Mentor Question

I've made you my mentor through the online ambassador program - I hope I've done this correctly. I have been tasked by a course I'm taking at the UofT with becoming involved with Wikipedia through a substantive edit of an article relevant to my topic. I've chosen Yochai Benkler's page for this. I have a question about editing standards that I couldn't find the answer to on the Wikipedia edit page. How should quotations be handled when citing someone's creation of a term or concept - do we use quotation marks? Do we italicize? Bold? If you go the Benkler page you'll see that this is done inconsistently there ("networked information economy" and "Jalt" for example) but maybe there's some subtlety I'm missing.

Firstly, let me answer your question. I would use single quotes to cite the actual term or concept. Secondly, I would like to thank you for choosing me as a mentor. Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their November 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on November 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on November 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles (and specifically will be targeting the oldest three months), as we want to copy edit as many of these as possible. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".
