Live Chat Help[edit]

Hi Roger. You were, or, at the time of this message, are still, in the live chat help room. Could you return there, I have a couple of questions about your draft - RichT|C|E-Mail 20:02, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

April 2024[edit]

Information icon Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions; however, it appears you may have written a Wikipedia article, or a draft for a Wikipedia article, about yourself, at Draft:Roger V. Gonzalez. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged – please see our guideline on writing autobiographies. If you create such an article, it may be deleted. If what you have done in life is genuinely notable and can be verified according to our policy for articles about living people, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later (see Notable people who have edited Wikipedia). If you wish to add to or change an existing article about yourself, you are welcome to propose the changes by visiting the article's talk page. Please understand that this is an encyclopedia and not a personal web space or social networking site. If your article has already been deleted, please see: Why was the page I created deleted?, and if you feel the deletion was an error, please discuss this with the deleting administrator. Thank you. Hi ... here is the situation. The Society launched this effort to bring recognition to fellows and hired an entity (American Wiki Editors) https://www.americanwikieditors.com/ to do this, and they have gone defunct (no number works, chat doesn't work, no responses to emails), and they left the project as is, and that is why I am not, as a non-experienced wiki developer, trying to bring this to a close. I hope that makes sense. Thus, several of the points you bring up like COI etc are new and unknown to me. What do you suggest? Rvgonzalez (talk) 17:59, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why was my page declined?[edit]

per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Roger_V._Gonzalez

I believe you declined my page and yet I meet at least two of the eight academic-specific criteria and it says you only need to meet one. I meet criterion 3 (Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and 5 (Endowed Chair at the University of Texas at El Paso. What is going on and what do I need to do. Rvgonzalez (talk) 19:16, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The endowed chair is not really relevant as nowadays there are too many of them. The fellowships are and I missed them, my error. It needs some format editing which you should not do, writing and editing pages on yourself is strongly frowned on. I will try and do some cleanup this week then pass it through. Thank you. Let me know what else you may need from me. Rvgonzalez (talk) 21:39, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. Do you happen to know when you will approve the page? Rvgonzalez (talk) 05:22, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have cleaned up somewhat your page, but you are going to have to do far more.
  • Include a COI disclosure on your user page and the Talk page of the article
  • Add the title of your PhD to the infobox scientist, and other relevant information
  • Add an image
  • Provide sources as marked with a citation needed on the draft. These have to be independent, you should not use ones you provided yourself such as blurbs before talks. For instance, use a link to the pdf of your PhD, your commencement etc.
Note: there may be mistakes in what I have changed Ldm1954 (talk) 06:36, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Plus, in Awards, I am a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, not Metallurgical Rvgonzalez (talk) 18:15, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I suspect the society may have been scammed. Theroadislong (talk) 18:23, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, what should I be doing now since it is looked upon as my doing my own bio? What is your recommendation? Rvgonzalez (talk) 21:37, 11 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved this discussion to your talk page, pinging @Theroadislong pro forma. I will create a new topic to continue this. Ldm1954 (talk) 05:25, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi LDM ... sorry, been on travel and finally may have some time here. I do have a question. I have been contacted by Robert.greer telling me that he an publish my page as is, then add more information slowly but at a charge of $400. Q: Is this ethical and legal and within WIKI Admin standards? Or is this a scam? He provided verification of his admin status via https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:RobertG . Thanks for your insights.
Also, you moved the discussion, but don't know how to continue it there. Sorry, I am so new at this. Rvgonzalez (talk) 17:18, 4 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is up to you about the person who offered to edit for you. This is a contentious issue, see WP:PAID.
In your current article what needs to be done is to include sources everywhere that has been marked. Editing Wikipedia is not more complex than using MacroHard Word or Tex. You also, critically, need to include independent sources. Just as reference letters from academic advisors are generally discounted as "tainted", you CV etc is not the strongest source. It may require some hunting, but all good sources require this. You would not want your page to be full of garbage -- a question of pride IMO. Ldm1954 (talk) 07:21, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Moving forward[edit]

First key point to start: neither I nor other editors (e.g. Theroadislong) are paid by Wikipedia, we just edit pages since we believe in the concept. We are prepared to help, but we also have real jobs and other responsibilities.

Second key point, if you want to have a page in Wikipedia you are going to have to do some of the work. It does look like the early version was created by scammers, but unfortunately that does not help you. While it is generally discouraged to edit your own page, given the situation you are going to have to provide information to get things going. For instance, please find a relevant link to your PhD thesis that can be included, and for the other key stages of your career and awards. Please do the relevant research, including reading some key documents such as the guide to academic notability (WP:NPROF), on COI (WP:COI), and others such as the different guideline categories (CAT:G). It is like any other research project, you have to do the hours and the analysis. (Much of it is really very much the same.)

It is better if you edit, I will be checking the page and repair major glitches if I see them (as may others). Feel free to ask questions here, rather than on my talk page. Ldm1954 (talk) 05:38, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I added some citations but some I cant find from my former institions given they don't keep a record of my history there. To be honest, I am a bit lost and wonder if this is worth it or can we just eliminate what needs a reference and just publish this. I am sorry for the novice questions. Maybe I should hire someone or just give up. Advice appreciated. Rvgonzalez (talk) 03:54, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It took me five minutes to find a link to your PhD thesis at https://repositories.lib.utexas.edu/items/a2b8a9a2-7cda-4842-852f-79e01761a7b2 via your Google Scholar profile. If I can find it easily, you can. This is a core scholarly skill which we teach our students, so I am not very sympathetic. Do the work. Ldm1954 (talk) 23:31, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
