This is my first attempt to work in the Wikipedia environment. I'm not trying to promote. I was just giving a standard professional bio.

Can you help me by telling me which parts are not acceptable?? My subsequent intent is specifically to add a new piece about the Business Rules Group standards work to Wikipedia (not a commercial group), and participate in editing material associated with its work ... "business rules", "Business Motivation Model", "SBVR", etc. etc. It would seem like professional background would help establish credibility ... but I am definitely not familiar with your mode of operation.

A Wikipedia user page is a place to write something about you as an editor. It is not a page to promote your business endeavours nor yourself. Listing your various trademarks (including ™), for example, or your epithet, serves no purpose but self-promotion. As an aside, credibility isn't established by a fancy user page - on the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog. Credibility on Wikipedia is established by citing reliable sources that are independent of the subject. As an expert you'll know better where to look for such sources - that is one of the main advantages of expertise on Wikipedia. This is an encyclopedia. There are two places for content about you at Wikipedia:

1. An article! If you want an article about yourself, you should first read Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide and WP:42. Then, find lots and lots of good sources that write about you. Then, please let me help. Paste the links here for me to see. If you are notable, I can help create the article for you.

2. Your userpage. It is not for a lengthy "profile". In fact, Wikipedia is not a free webhosting service for you to host any sort of profile. If you are a constructive editor here who helps build the encyclopedia, then a short bio is accepted. So, if you want your bio at your userpage, sure. But, it can only be a few sentences long.

Oh my. Got blocked on my very first afternoon of Wikipedia editing. Not a good start. However, I think it would be best to wait to appeal the block. I'd like to get this right.

1. Could you look at my latest profile submission? Did you get it? Short and sweet, more suited to purpose I think(??).

2. Would it help if I put you in touch with some of the other members of the Business Rules Group? It's a completely volunteer, non-profit, non-incorporated group that spent many years pioneering the basic (shared) ideas of the business rules approach. It's a much smaller variant than say OMG, or GUIDE, or IIBA (other non-profits in IT that are documented in Wikipedia articles). I wrote the piece deliberately focused on the collective ideas of the group and how they have evolved. In part I wanted to do that because those ideas are sometimes misunderstood and misapplied. I think if one examines the piece carefully, there is nothing whatsoever of commercial / promotional content. (If inadvertently included I'll gladly excise it.) I actually spent a lot of time carefully documenting and referencing everything.

IAC, please advise on the best course of action.

--> Is listing the websites the only problem?? I'll gladly delete them!! I thought I read somewhere that a URL was allowed if not surrounded by any text. (Never find the reference now.) BTW, I looked for samples of appropriate userpage write-ups, but I didn't find any to go by. Did I miss them? (Quite possible.) This is all very ironic since my specialty is rules(!). Oh well.

Request reason:

Yesterday afternoon was my first attempt ever to edit Wikipedia. I was prepared for a learning curve, but it was more than expected. I believe I was blocked for the following reason: "The problem is that everything you have done so far has been to promote yourself and your organization.".

I know this statement applies to my user page, and possibly to the article I was trying to create on "Business Rules Group". I will answer both.

1. My user page. I have 42 years in the IT industry, where it is customary to use a bio listing accomplishments and associations. I assumed (wrongly) that would be appropriate for Wikipedia. I also assumed (wrongly) it would be a good place to practice Wikipedia scripting. With patient guidance from Ms. Anna Frodesiak, I whittled it down to what I finally thought would be acceptable (statement of interests and activities, rather than anything promotional). However, I left 2 URLS in it, unaccompanied by any text, as I interpreted would be allowed by the following statement from Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:User_pages): "You are also welcome to include a simple link to your personal home page, although you should not surround it with any promotional language." It's quite possible I misinterpreted that statement. IAC, the links can definitely be omitted. In fact, for fear of further problems, I'm prepared to simply leave the page blank for now until I better understand Wikipedia conventions in this regard. I was never doing this for promotional purposes. IAC, most people who read any material I might get involved with (all on "business rules" and related matters) probably have either heard of me or can easily find out whatever they want to know about me elsewhere. Not a biggie.

2. The article on the Business Rules Group (www.BusinessRulesGroup.org). This is definitely not "my" organization. (My company is www.BRSolutions.com. We also own www.BRCommunity.com, which we run for community service, not for profit.) Business Rules Group is (was) a volunteer group of 15-20 professionals from different organizations all over the world who contributed freely over many years (starting in 1989) to develop some important papers and standards in the area of business rules and related matters. It was not an incorporated group. It made outsized contributions to the field. It came up with the first definition of business rule, widely cited in the industry. One of its works, the Business Motivation Model, was adopted as a standard by Object Management Group (OMG). (I was one of the editors on that paper.) More recent work evolved into the OMG standard Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules. Except that its website is still live, the Business Rule Group is no longer really active. It's work and influence is therefore of significant historical and developmental importance and should be properly documented.

Additional Note: The article I submitted to Wikipedia on Business Rules Group (not promotional in any sense that I can think of, just very well documented) has been previously run on www.BRCommunity.com. I take it that was the reason for its speedy removal from Wikipedia. (As a publisher, I fully appreciate the caution Wikipedia has exercised in the matter! Kudos.) As owner of that site and copyright holder, I am fully prepared to relinquish any and all rights to the material, as I have said already. I have requested instructions about the best way to do that. (I prefer not to use a "copyleft notice" if there is a viable alternative.) I could use some help there.

A Wikipedia userpage is designed to give relevant information about you as applies within Wikipedia. Your editing interests, skills and past history, if any, are relevant, as may be your aspirations. We have no interest in any of your past or present activities outside Wikipedia. As to your article, it was deleted for obvious reasons - promotion and copyright violation.
