Userspace speedies (in case you didn't know)

Hi, I just thought I'd let you know that the "A" criteria (for example, A7) only to apply to articles- ie in the mainspace- rather like the "F" criteria only apply in the file namespace, "T" in the template namespace, "C" in the category namespace and "U" in userspace. However, the general criteria ("G") apply in all namespaces. That's why your A7 tagging of a userpage was rejected but the G11 tag fulfilled. New Page Patrol

Hi, yes Twinkle normally does that automatically, though when I have to do it manually (because I can't use Twinkle on my laptop) it means having to navigate back to the new pages list and then marking them as patrolled, having just done something to the page. I can't do it before I go into the page, as I don't always know what to do with the page and thus leave it for somebody else. -- roleplayer 20:59, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Also, I just noticed that I don't always arrive at the pages I am assessing through new pages patrol, and therefore it is easy to miss marking the pages as patrolled. Feel free to correct whatever errors have been made in Wikipedia articles. However please make sure that all changes that are made, particularly to high profile articles are referenced using externally verifiable sources. Please in the future, please do not assume that I am saying something that I did not say. I did assume "good faith". I did not state that your edit was in bad faith. Nor did I believe that your edit was in bad faith. These are all assumptions on your part. What I commented upon was your edit and in your edit you placed in the article the incorrect information about Ms. Noem's place of birth. What I did state was that your edit was incorrect and it was incorrect. By me simply stating a fact that your edit was incorrect does not mean that I assumed bad faith. I am sure that you made the incorrect edit in completely good faith, but just because you made an edit in good faith does not mean that you were correct. I was just pointing out the obvious. Thank you for the note, but I didn't create it - I come up as the creator of the redirect because I moved the incorrectly titled Track marshall to Track Marshall. Hi, I notice you added a speedy tag to the above page. I wasn't sure when I nom'd it whether it was speediable or not, and decided against it because I couldn't tie down one single category that it came under. Does it fit a speedy category? I decided not to waste my time on rereading speedy guidelines (they are not even nicely linked form Template:Speedy where I went); and I don't have junk like that memorized :) Indeed, for me it is a case of IAR, or WP:DUCK. It looks like it should be speedied, so it should be speedied :) Mind you, I come from the old generation of 'pedians, when IAR still mattered :D PS. I'm certainly noticing that in recent years I'm having to double-check myself a lot more frequently over my actions, and having to jump through hoops that were never there when I started in 2003. I have never been a fan of bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake, which is probably why I'm not an admin and do not want to be. So what do you get for seven years' service to the community? Colonel Grantham

The new Weedon Hill development has been in the local news today, so I have taken the bull by the horns and created an article about it. The development is built on the reputed site of the 1642 Battle of Aylesbury, and the proposed road names in the development are to be named after important figures from the battle. Prince Rupert Drive is one that has definitely been confirmed, and his article is easy enough to locate. However the other confirmed road name is Colonel Grantham Avenue. I can find reference to Grantham in contemporary references of this and other battles that took place in England in the 1640s, but can find nothing about the individual himself in order that he might also (possibly) have an article on Wikipedia. Does anyone know anything about Colonel Grantham that could lead to a decent biography about him being written? -- roleplayer 21:38, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

I typed "Colonel Grantham 1642" into Google and this[1] page came up first. It mention's "Colonel Grantham's regiments". This page[2] has "Thomas Grantham" as commander of a regiment of the "Earl of Essex Army". Got to rush... Alansplodge (talk) 07:17, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Two other 17th Century "Thomas Granthams" to beware of; a Baptist preacher from Lincolnshire who would have been 8 in 1642[3] and a ship's captain, Thomas Grantham, who was knighted towards the end of the century[4]. One Thomas Grantham Esq (probably our man) married Frances, daughter of Sir Godfrey Wentworth on 12th January 1657[5]. Thomas Grantham also appears under Lincolnshire in an Ordnance of 1643 listing those who had raised regiments and who would be paid by Parliament "for the mutuall defence each of other against the Popish Army in the North under the command of the Marquesse of Newcastle."[6]. Well I suppose the ultimate question is, was he notable enough to have a Wikipedia article written about him? Do we know enough about him in order to write a decent article? John Hampden has an article, and he was at the same rank as Grantham (and in the same battle), but I think Hampden might be more notable for other reasons. -- roleplayer 14:57, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
As every schoolboy knows (or used to), Hampden was one of the five members of Parliament that Charles tried to arrest. From memory (more than 40 years ago):

Arthur Haselrig Esquire

More progress (we won't know if Thomas Grantham is notable or not until we find out who he was); the WP article Lincolnshire (UK Parliament constituency) says that Sir Thomas Grantham was MP for Lincolnshire from 1621-1622. Alansplodge (talk) 16:01, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
But this was probably our man's father; the Lincoln Archives have a folio "Rental and survey of all the lands in the possession of Thomas Grantham esq., son of Sir Thomas Grantham kt, decd, 1638 (reference to "my father" in the margin) Goltho, giving tenant, rent and acreage, all of land in closes (folio 132v) Kingthorpe (folio 130v)[7]. Given the information that Grantham's first name was Thomas I have done a quick search on google and have come up with several references to a Baptist minister from Lincolnshire, who died in 1692: [8] [9] [10] [11]. I suspect that may be a relation, possibly a son? There are also other references to Thomas Grantham from Lincolnshire, one of which is definitely the Sir who was possibly the father, though this one shows an early link with Hampden: [12]. There's also a Sir Thomas Grantham, 1641-1718: [13], and a Thomas Grantham who was master of Peter House in Cambridge in 1642: [14]. This file[15] (p.45) says that Thomas Grantham the preacher was born to "Ralf and Elyzabeth Grantham in Spilsby on 15 April 1633" So maybe a more distant relative, if at all. Alansplodge (talk) 18:30, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

PS according to familysearch.org there was a Thomas Grantham baptised in Goltho, Lincolnshire on 5th November 1612, son of Sir Thomas Grantham and Frances Puckering. The record shows that he married Dorothy Alford (no date given) and that he died in 1655. -- roleplayer 22:30, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

I find though that it assumes good faith with the originating author. They are making an attempt at removing non-notable material, therefore it shows good faith to accept their attempt and mark the article as {{db-author}}, rather than berating them for removing speedy templates. I think the latter method bites the newbies a bit too much. -- roleplayer 22:55, 14 August 2010 (UTC)
It may have, but that's the message everyone else uses, Uw-speedy2. It's part of the warnings we give to users that don't behave properly, you start with level 1, which is the lowest and it assumes good faith, then if the user continues, you step it up all the way to level 4. After level 4, if the user still continues, it gets reported to WP:AIV. You can take a look at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace and ask for improvements to those messages if you want, or if one doesn't make sense. Basque. For some reason not known to me, I acquired a talk page there. (Just got a message saying it was there. Nice welcoming box on it, all in Basque.) So I created a userpage to go with it - "Idazle ingelesa naiz. Ez dut euskaraz hitz egiten. I hau Google itzulitako." (Can't remember exactly what it says - probably that I am an English writer and don't speak Basque. And I used Google to translate - which probably results in it not meaning what I wanted it to anyway. No-one's complained yet.) I have got edits on the other ones - even the Norwegian. (I stopped the speedy on a rather obscure article about a rather obscure Viking (or someone), went to the Norwegian version for refs, couldn't find much - and added one I found in English.) I have to be careful in the foreign places - humour is not easy to translate. (I have made jokes in French, though. Seemed to work. Didn't get thrown out of the bistro.) Do you have a unified login? It creates a user page for your name if you are logged into one project and for whatever reason visit another. I go to other language wikis all the time while patrolling recent changes and new pages (what I do when I'm bored or should be working) and so subsequently have userpages all over the shot including, obscurely, in the Chinese Wikipedia. Very few of them have edits however. I have the dubious honour of being one of many British people who can speak no other language apart from the smattering of French I learned in school (I failed O-Level French). -- roleplayer 23:10, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Never found automatic userpages. I just make 'em where I've edited. (Makes note - must do one on the Dutch place.) I'm one those who can read to a greater or lesser extent in many European languages (but not Basque...) - and can spot spam in many more (including Indonesian on one occasion). When in France, I speak French quite well - have even been taken for French (OK, Alsatian) by French people (they couldn't place my accent - which isn't surprising, 'cos English people can't place my accent in English - and they fixed on Alsace.
