Hi, can you look at Murders of Margaret and Seana Tapp please? Paul Benjamin Austin (talk) 14:34, 15 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Rich, questioning why you made the seemingly useless updates to List of former tractor manufacturers to change USA to US??? The common reference for the United States of America is USA. If you want to yous the ISO 3166 2-alpha standard of US, why wouldn't you change all of the other countries as well? (Except that most people wouldn't know what they stand for). USA makes sense, is easily understood, and is the common, accepted, abbreviation. Your edit was unnecessary and causes more confusion than anything.

Please refrain from this type of useless editing. Thanks Scoty6776 (talk) 02:21, 16 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Redesigning Wikipedia's Defenses Against Spam[edit]

Hello,

I’m King, a current Junior at Stanford University. You’ve spent many years on Wikipedia. I am curious what you think about the current system of flagging articles and issues and how it could be optimized. Maybe Machine Learning tools could be implemented? I can also be reached at iamking-at-stanford-dt-edu. (Formatted weirdly to protect myself from bots) Would love to hear from you either on Wikipedia talk or via email. Thank you for your time!

P.S. I grew up using Wikipedia and would love to have the opportunity to contribute back to this community-powered knowledge base. Speaking with you would be greatly advantageous. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingalandydy (talkcontribs) 04:51, 18 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

IP Block exemption request[edit]

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who accepted the request.

Rich Farmbrough/Archive (block logactive blocksglobal blockscontribsdeleted contribsfilter logcreation logchange block settingsunblockcheckuser (log))

Request reason:

I'm currently struggling under an IP range block, namely: 94.117.32.0/20 blocked by User:Kuru (due to an LTA). I decided it was time to request IP Block exemption. Using the proper procedures, unfortunately does not work. https://utrs.wmflabs.org/index.php claims

There were errors processing your unblock appeal: We need to know which administrator placed your block.

Needless to say there is no field for this information. The page also threw the following errors: Warning: file_get_contents(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=revisions&rvlimit=1&rvprop=content&format=json&titles=User_talk:Rich Farmbrough): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request in /usr/utrs/production/public_html/src/appealObject.php on line 811 Notice: Undefined index: by in /usr/utrs/production/public_html/src/appealObject.php on line 226 (Note that the JSON format is deprecated so there is a deeper issue here too.)

Accept reason:

Dropped that range block down to anon-only, which should resolve the short-term issue. Not sure how to troubleshoot the error with the IPBE. Kuru (talk) 18:30, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-disambig}}; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is {{db-redircom}}; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use {{db-blankdraft}}.

Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • {{Copyvio-revdel}} now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

Arbitration

Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

RESTRICTION violation?[edit]

I am curious why you are once again violating the very specific restriction placed on you regarding replacing a template redirect with a template. Primefac (talk) 17:00, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

For example, this is "changing template redirects to templates", explicitly mentioned in the restriction. Huon (talk) 17:05, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly related: as far as I can tell, this edit is a cosmetic edit made with AWB, in violation of AWB rule 4. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:30, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, thanks for your interest. I was specifically mystified by a template called "III", which turned out to be "Ill" though in the typeface selected by our beneficent graphic designers they cannot be distinguished - see my comments suggesting better candidates for the font stack at the time of the graphic makeover. It seemed like a good idea to remove this obfuscation, so I made a start. (A better solution would be to create the required articles on en.wikipedia, of course.) All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 21:17, 3 January 2019 (UTC).[reply]
That doesn't at all answer my question, unless you are implying that you made your edits knowing full well that they violate your restriction. Primefac (talk) 22:50, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Rich Farmbrough, did you violate your editing restriction with these edits? Did you violate AWB rule 4 with the edit I linked to? – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:55, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
With no reply after a week, I have removed your AWB access. You are welcome to re-apply at WP:PERM/AWB or contest it at the appropriate noticeboard. Primefac (talk) 11:36, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Editors resigning vice undergoing Arbitration case[edit]

I read your comment on the last Signpost arbitration report. Could you tell me more about the editors who left? Feel free to email privately if you prefer. ☆ Bri (talk) 03:31, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Bri: There was a discussion of this on one of the ArbCom talk pages, I think. Another example is User:EncycloPetey. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 15:50, 14 January 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Help[edit]

Can you maybe fix the Duplicate default sort key message at the bottom of the Rhys Hoskins page? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:E010:1100:9C19:B275:FD24:77C4 (talk) 04:07, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
