GOCE newsletters and reports

@Baffle gab1978: Thanks for doing the December newsletter and the annual report. (I hope I haven't been editing the newsletters too heavily, and will try to ease off of that.) I'll try to contribute a bit to the report in the next few days, plug in some numbers and maybe write something as outgoing lead. Per usual, I'll wait until the last 2019 Requests are completed before porting the year's data to a spreadsheet for finer analysis. Beaune made it through TFA and nobody died as a result! Phew, and thanks for the copy edit suggestions [insert appropriate DASH here] genuinely; the issue was never the veracity of your suggestions, more the danger of being overwhelmed if the effort was scaled up. Anyway, have been reading up on some of the MOS points since. Hope all is well and if your on the northern hemisphere, January weather isn't too miserable so far. @Ceoil: I'm glad to hear that. I think in the future I'll probably just follow WP:BRD for the straightforward MOS cleanup rather than boring editors with the details, and save discussion for the few places where I spot clarity issues. It sounds like your further north than I am (51.9° N). As I said, it was the perceived short deadline, rather than the substance of you points that sent me off the rails. Anyways, to push my luck, could do with help from the likes of you on Skellig Michael, which contains a lot of numbers and stats that might need assistance re formatting and such. Also I cant spell. Well, in this case, two of the back-and-forth editors have both been indeffed by CheckUsers for sockpuppetry. I think that one of them might work for the show's production company and might be trying to take ownership of it. Obviously a conflict of interest, and the result is, uh, shall we say "self-proctology"?
Many Indian TV articles have issues like this. One common thing I experience is the assertion of deliberate ignorance. Ex: a cast member leaves the series. You write, "In 2017, Jane Smith left the series after a dispute with producers over the direction her character was heading.[1]" That information, which provides historical context for that alleged work of art, gets deleted and in some cases, the cast member gets deleted as well, like here, where this actor apparently never existed.
Or, complete sentences are shunned in favour of parentheticals: "John Smith in a dual role as Karan and Kabir. In 2017, Smith's character died in a snowmobile accident." becomes "John Smith as Karan/Kabir (2016–2017) (died) (dual role)". I could rant for hours about this, but that certainly won't be fun for you, so I'll just go away and wish you a good remainder of your day. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:58, 27 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

note re Wikiprojects info

thanks for your reply to me, re mass mailing permissions. i wanted to ask you about something else. I see that you are a coordinator for the WikiProject GOCE? I am a coordinator at WikiProject History. I have been trying to expand some resources lately to let people know about current activities at WikiProjects. I created a new section for this at Wikipedia:Community bulletin board, and added an item for GOCE there. Could you please let me know what you think of that? I am trying to create some shared workspace for WikiProjects to keep each other up to date on current projects and editing activities. I was wondering if we could create some kind of shared forum or resources for WikiProjects to exchange information on events and methods. I suspect it could be a little more succinct, to say that there's a copy editing event for a certain period and provide a link for more information. Our outgoing message box lists current and upcoming events. There are also a lot of ongoing WikiProject editing events like the Challenge series. I don't have a lot of time to read forums (I hardly ever visit the Village Pump) so I could see a quick list of events generating interest. GOCE March newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate.

January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here.

March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now!

Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone!

Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

Multiple claimants on KAI KF-X

Hey Reidgreg, fellow copyeditor Tenryuu here. It seems that three of us have claimed the KAI KF-X article to work on for the March 2020 drive. It appears that none of us had removed the {{copyedit}} tag or added an {{in use}} tag for others to see. Do you know what normally happens in this case?

If you look at the article history for KAI KF-X, you'll see that I put in an edit (diff) with the summary "beginning copy edit" about half an hour before you started working on the article. The edit that I made commented-out the copy edit tag which should prevent it from listing in the category of articles needing copy edit. This is a step a lot of us use to try to prevent this very situation. (I'd also added the article to my article list on the March drive page). I personally tend not to use the in-use tag because bots interact with it at 24 hours, and a 5k copy edit often takes me longer than that. As you may have noticed, BluePenguin18 was working on the article before me, but he decided to stop and I received his permission to take over on his talk page. I think in this case, since I'd claimed the article first (or second) and started working on it, that I should continue with it.
Edit conflicts like this happen, since we're busily working on the same group of articles during a drive, but we try to minimize them. It's always a good idea to check the article's history before you start a copy edit, (1) to see if someone else is already copy editing the article, and (2) to see if the article is undergoing frequent editing and may not be stable enough for copy editing. It's not a bad idea to check the article talk page as well, to look for discussions about content disputes or other issues with the article.
I hope that's okay with you. BTW, I checked one of your copy edits and was impressed with all the extra cleanup work you did! I'm pretty good at spotting MOS stuff if there's another copy edit you'd like me to check. – Reidgreg (talk) 03:18, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Reidgreg, thanks for the compliment. As much as it pains me, I'll withdraw from KAI KF-X. As a heads-up, I suspect the article may be copyvio-ing via plagiarism; checking sources for a date to use brought me to near-identical wording used and might explain the weird tense usage I saw prior to editing it. @Koridas: When a GA review is put "on hold", that indicates that the reviewer is holding a pass/fail determination while allowing time for the nominator (or other interested parties) to make edits to the article (see Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Instructions § Putting the article on hold). I think that was stated in the auto message that Legobot left on your talk page, but I could have stated it explicitly on the review page. Sorry again for any confusion. I last updated the progress on the review page on 23 May. The review page is marked with  Not done to draw attention to what I feel needs to be done. If you have trouble distinguishing these, please let me know and I'll find another way of communicating this. Hi, looks as if you (plural you) will get the copy edit tag backlog down to one month. Amazing. And there is some right chaff in the May list! I am surprised at how the Requests list has burgeoned; it doesn't seem that long ago that it was down to just two articles not being worked on. Anyway, hearty congratulations to you and the team.

Prejudice (1949 film)

Hi, I wonder if you could help me here. According to the AFI Catalog of Feature Films, this production of the Protestant Film Commission premiered on October 17, 1949 in both New York and London. I can find no other mention of this so-called London premiere on Google or Newspapers.com. I'm wondering if it could be referring to London, Ontario? Guild of Copy Editors June 2020 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2020. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below. All times and dates stated are in UTC.

Current events

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 00:01 on 16 June. GOCE coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, or you know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: This blitz begins at 00:01 on 14 June and ends at 23:59 on 20 June, with themes of articles tagged for copyedit in May 2020 and requests.

Drive and blitz reports

March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Of the 51 editors who signed up, 43 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020.

Outreach: To mark the 10th anniversary of our first Backlog Elimination Drive, The Signpost contributor and GOCE participant Puddleglum2.0 interviewed project coordinators and copy-editors for the journal's April WikiProject Report. The Drive and the current Election of Coordinators have also been covered in The Signpost's May News and Notes page.

Now that it's spread out over the summer, I don't know if it's worthwhile to renominate so soon. New info about that will be coming in and added slowly over the summer. GOCE Assessment

Hi Reidgreg. I recently CIR blocked Can I Log In. We have begun discussing a possible unblock. I noticed you gave a long review of one of their GOCE efforts in early May. Have you observed them since then? If so what have you observed? Judging by their talk page, I take the lack of GOCE related comments, compared to other areas they edit in, as a positive, but would like some independent confirmation of that if possible. As another GOCE coordinator, Can I Log In's copy edits seemed pretty good to me. @Barkeep49: I was only looking at a specific series of edits by CILI; these had their good and bad points, which I would expect from a newer copy editor. They could be a little more thoughtful in their editing. I tend to AGF a lot, and I hope that the recent feedback will help them correct their editing behaviour. Drive and Blitz reports

June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Other news

June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Reidgreg, do you have a link to information about these "insecure ciphersuites" you refer to in your message? I will offer technical help if I can. If it is not giving away too much personal information, what OS and browser are you using to get to WP? I have a computer that is over eight years old, and it works perfectly on WP, so it seems like a used computer would not be too expensive. I don't know your financial situation, though. If you can afford $400, a MacBook Air like this one is newer than my computer and would be a great WP editing computer. Thanks all. @Jonesey95: The WF message appears on the failed login screen; I've been unable to find the text here or at Wikimedia. It states:
I'd previously tried the required OS and browser but their performance on my hardware was rather frustrating. I think my best bet would be to use a hard drive partition for the newer OS and browser to retain the functionality of my existing software, and reboot from the new partition only when editing Wikipedia. That would change the way I edit and my approach to this hobby.
This is something I don't really want to deal with right now, with some other things I have going on. I'll probably be semi-retired for a couple months until I can reevaluate. – Reidgreg (talk) 17:10, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. You might be able to get away with just a browser upgrade or change (trying Chrome/Safari/Firefox instead of whatever you are using) rather than a painful OS upgrade. Feel free to ping me or post here if and when you have the time and energy to deal with it. As I said, I have an eight-year-old Mac (with upgraded RAM and an SSD hard drive that replaced the spinning hard drive), and it runs Mac OS 10.14 and other modern software just fine. This week, I tried viewing a few Wikipedia articles and each time I was redirected to https://en.wikipedia.org/sec-warning. Forget editing, it won't let me view Wikipedia, which seems really screwy. Where is the security risk in reading Wikipedia? Don't we want people to be able to read Wikipedia, however outdated their platforms? By searching on the elements of the "ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA" string in the "Your Browser's Connection Security is Outdated" you posted above I came up with information at Elliptic_Curve_Digital_Signature_Algorithm#Security that might help explain why they're reluctant to use certain cipher suites. HTTPS/Browser Recommendations, linked to from that same box, recommends using Firefox, Chrome, or Opera browsers on older Windows and Mac desktops, while getting a new mobile device seems to be the only recommendation, if that's your problem platform. Changing browsers has been fairly painless for me in the past, on both Mac and Windows desktops, but I don't know your platform, nor your tolerance for such changes. Thanks for the concerns. There are some non-trivial matters I must attend to before the year's end, after which I may be able to return to editing in some capacity... or not. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the chance to edit yesterday (particularly sourcing a sentence that an IP had added to a GA). The deletion discussion was closed after two days (before I saw this) as keep. Almost 90 TWD episode articles had been put forward. The response (which was probably largely from the authors of those articles) was that while many of the articles were underdeveloped or plot-heavy, that they met general notability guidelines due to reviews in reliable sources. Some dismissed the deletion request on procedural grounds as it would be time consuming to consider each of the nominated articles.
The article which I was pinged for (linked above) is the feminist episode featuring Carol, Maggie, and female antagonists. I was a relatively new editor when I worked on it (which probably shows) though Tools says I have 50% authorship after more than four years, so most of it stuck. The critical feedback I received on the article talk page from Drovethrughosts pushed me to become a more responsible editor, including my stint with the Guild of Copy Editors to work on paraphrasing, quoting and encyclopedic tone.
