Sentencing in England and Wales[edit]

Sentencing in E&W - that's quite a topic to take on. It looks like you're covering just the current framework, not the history? That's fine as an approach but you would need to mention this is the lead paragraph when you get round to writing it. You might also want to consider splitting youth sentencing off from adult as they are both large topics and doing both in one might lead to an article that is too bulky. NtheP (talk) 11:38, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

yes it is a long topic, i figure it will take me about one to two days, I shall be adding a history section (need to find my copy of the english legal system first) and current developments section. Feel free to add to it in my user space, hopefully I shall get around to publishing it in the main space tonight or tomorrow and get some did you knows on the main page. Once again thanks for the welcome.

I've brought your reply over here so the conversation is in one place, I've got this page on my watch list for the time being so I can see if you reply or you can use {{talkback}} to leave me a notice on my talk page.
I was looking at the referencing you've used and some points which might help.
  1. Ref names ref name="The Criminal Justice Act 2003 2003 c. 44 Part 12 Chapter 1 Matters to be taken into account in sentencing Section 142 is a bit long. The benefit of ref name is that it's easy to reuse - I's suggest something shorter like ref name=CJA2003s142 That way when you want reuse that reference later in the article then all you need to type is <ref name=CJA2003s142/> - note the / at the end of the name
  2. Publisher and work in {{cite web}}. I'd suggest that the work is |work=legislation.gov.uk and publisher is |publisher=The National Archives Personally I wouldn't bother with Part and Chapter as the section number is specific enough to provide the location within the act, but I would include |isbn=9 780105 444039
  3. Case citations. Try and avoid subscription websites like lexisweb especially if the summary available on the non subscription page doesn't directly support the point you're trying to make. If it's not available somewhere like http://www.bailii.org/ then use the print reference after a suitable quote e.g. It has been held that the purpose of sentencing is to protect the public . . .<ref>R v Winkler [2004] All ER (D) 33 (Sep) Rafferty J, page 34</ref>. Sadly there isn't a cite template for UK law reports yet so you have to be a bit creative ({{Cite court}} is very US-centric), the basis for referencing them is to be found at Case citation#United Kingdom.
Happy to help any further if I can. NtheP (talk) 13:52, 8 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I have had a go at the first section of the article - I hope my changes are not considered to be too drastic. This is a huge subject and will require quite a lot of developing, although the basic approach is sound. So if you don't mind, I'll carry on copy editing over the next few days and adding a bit more legal info. and references where appropriate. Hello, I notice that you recently created a new page, Theories of criminal sentencing in England and Wales. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page - Sentencing in England and Wales. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Sentencing in England and Wales - you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think that the article you created should remain separate, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. nancy 05:18, 14 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Old Square Chambers requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

Copyright violations[edit]

A number of the articles you have created have been removed this morning as it has been identified that you are copying text direct from copyright sources which do not have a licence compatible with Wikipedia. This is known as a copyright violation. For legal reasons Wikipedia is unable to accept such text. I have reviewed your contributions and have - for those which have not yet been removed - tagged potential problems however please can you review those which are untagged and remove any text which you copied from elsewhere.

Copyright violations are treated very seriously on Wikipedia and whilst we will always give new contributors the benefit of the doubt regarding their intentions, persistent violators should expect to be blocked from editing

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you need any help with this although I should warn you that I am not only editing intermittently at the moment so may take some time to respond.
