Berlin wiki meeting[edit]

Hello, I have been mulling over this for some time (actually at least a year), and would like to propose a meeting of the Berlin-residing Users of the english wiki. I would not mind :-) and be interested to come if I am in Berlin - which does not happen too often currently. I am working abroad. Just find more people interested, and keep me informed. The German community has a pretty meeting place, see de:Wikipedia:Berlin, maybe this is an option for us, too? As I am quite occupied at the moment, I may not look at my talk page here too often. I was not suggesting to join a German Wikipedia meeting. On the contrary, I'd suggest to only use the place - a spacious public place as I read, but have never been there - if there is not a German Wikipedian assembly at the same time ;-) Btw. since I am active in several language Wikipedias, I am interested in learning what other peoples criticisms are of the way the German one is run, notabene sharing my point of view, too, if someone cares. -- Purodha Blissenbach 13:00, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation and Recommendations for writing articles on Hindi Wikipedia[edit]

Hindi wikipedia invites and welcomes Wikipedians to contribute for the cause of spreading knowledge and the Hindi language. This page contains guidelines for writing a wiki-article on any topic at the Hindi Wikipedia, with special recommendations for writing in Hindi (Note: The script/font-family for Hindi is Devanāgari; the script/font-system for English is Roman script, also, the Hindi spelling system is not completely standardized). This article is yet in English language (mostly), in order to encourage even non-native/foreign people who have learnt/are learning Hindi to contribute to the Hindi wikipedia, and native Hindi speakers who normally write in English. The examples given below are only for explanation.

Recommendations:

  1. Firstly for proper viewing, it is recommended to keep all links NOT-UNDERLINED. Otherwise the मात्रा below the Hindi alphabets might get partly hidden behind the underlines. For this, please go to My Preferences (मेरी पसंद) at the top of the page, then click Misc., and then choose "underline links -> Never". Save your settings. Also, do not click yes for "justify paragraphs", otherwise on some browsers, the devanagari script will appear highly distorted.
  2. All users are requested and encouraged to contribute articles here, especially, to create new articles on general topics. They are also encouraged to expand the existing articles, and improve upon them. A non-user can also do the same; it is recommended but not required to register yourself as a wikipedian user at the Hindi wikipedia. As far as possible, each article should be written with a Neutral Point of View (NPOV)—no nationalistic or partiality or hatred based articles are welcome. The articles should be based on facts—and appropriate references should be provided as and where needed. See the English wiki's help page for editing in general. Almost all the general wiki-features are available for editing on Hindi wiki too. Guidelines for the content matter is mostly the same as given in English wiki.
  3. Since the Hindi wiki is at its initial stages, users are welcome to take introduction and basic points from the English (or another) wikipedia's corresponding article and translate them for small articles. An in-page link to the English wiki's article will be deemed sufficient for references (a template might be created stating this). For longer articles, it is recommended to mention the references separately.
  4. Since most computer users in India and elsewhere have the standard Western-type keyboard, it is best recommended (but not necessarily required) to use the virtual (software) keyboard like the one of Hindimozhi or of ISIS (Tavultesoft Keyman)—which are freewares. These are advantageous because the contemporary Hindi-speakers in India often write messages/chat using Hindi words but written in Roman (English) script, and the layout of these keyboards is quite the same that such people use. For example, using the "normal" keyboard with this software, typing ga would give ग and ghaa would give घा.
  5. Create the article with its name written in Hindi (devanagari script). Always take care to include the nukta (dot below) for foreign / Urdu loanwords wherever it occurs in the standard spelling. For non-Indian names, use that spelling (for article name and other words) which is commonly encountered in Hindi newspapers, G.K.-books, Hindi-dubbed TV documentaries and Hollywood films and magazines. e.g., America-अमरीका (या अमेरिका), China-चीन, French-फ़्रांसिसी. For English acronyms/short-forms, use the initials in Roman script, and again create a full form in Hindi and redirect it to the short form. e.g. IPA (अन्तर्राष्ट्रीय ध्वनि वर्णाक्षर); UNO (संयुक्त राष्ट्र संघ). Doing the opposite is also fine. But creating the article with the Hindi short form, as सं०रा०सं०, is not recommended. Also, the article proper must be written with the proper nukta, as फ़ारसी, and then, a non-nukta (mis-)spelt version फारसी should preferably be created to redirect to the correct spelling.
  6. Hindi wikipedia strongly recommends the users to write articles in everyday common Hindi in the खड़ीबोली dialect (Hindustani or Hindi-Urdu, i.e., बोलचाल वाली हिन्दी, which may include many loanwords from Persian and Arabic). The use of शुद्ध संस्कृतनिष्ठ हिन्दी is in general neither required nor recommended. E.g., use: वजह instead of कारण, ख़ास instead of विशेष, वगैरह instead of इत्यादि, लेकिन instead of परन्तु etc. However, for technical and specialized vocabulary, the use of शुद्ध संस्कृतनिष्ठ हिन्दी is recommended and usually mandatory. Thus: upper House of Parliament—संसद का उच्च सदन, but not Urdu—मजिलिस का ऐवान-ए-बाला ; Foreign Minister—विदेशमन्त्री, but not Urdu—वज़ीर-ए-ख़ारिजा ; knowledge/science—ज्ञान/विज्ञान, but not इल्म. Use spoken Hindi's ये and वो instead of यह and वह / वे. Do not use the title of respect जी after names, it is unencyclopedic. Thus: कृष्ण / श्री कृष्ण but not कृष्ण जी. Use the आप form and its corresponding 3rd person verbal conjugation for writing about respectable persons. Thus: श्री वाजपेयी मध्य प्रदेश में जन्मे थे. But not: वाजपेयी मध्य प्रदेश में जन्मा था. But do not use the pronoun "आप" itself in-text in biographies.
  7. English should be used sparingly, only when required; i.e., if the corresponding शुद्ध हिन्दी word is too "difficult and not generally encountered", or if it is a proper name of non-Indian person/place/terminology/title, or if the user is highly unsure of the proper translation. It is recommended (but not required) for English-to-Hindi translation while writing articles, the Shabdkosh online dictionary should be used. For each English word, that alternative should be used which is generally encountered in everyday spoken Hindi, and also fits well into the context. Use of intelligent guesses for newly encountered words is also allowed, and so are translations encountered in Hindi-dubbed TV documentaries, Hollywood films, Hindi-translated books, etc. e.g., दमपिशाच for en:Dementor (used in dubbed HP films).
  8. If used, it is recommended to use the English words within the articles using the English (Roman) alphabets rather than devanagari (or better, the devanagari transliteration should be used in the sentence, followed by the English word in Roman alphabet in parentheses). Such words should be italicized and not put in quotation marks. Preferably, there should be an in-page interwiki link (like :en:) on the word to the English wikipedia. If the word comes as an integral part of a sentence, so as not to break the continuity, the en: prefix should be hidden by writing the word again after the pipe sign (piped link). Thus, recommended: हैरी पॉटर ने ''[[:en:Pensieve|Pensieve]]'' के अन्दर ''[[:en:Little Hangleton|Little Hangleton]]'' गाँव में लॉर्ड वोल्डेमॉर्ट की माँ ''[[:en:Merope Gaunt|Merope Gaunt]]'' को देखा. ''[[:en:Resplendent Quetzal|Resplendent Quetzal]]'' पक्षी के ऊपर एक मेक्सिकन पादरी डा० ''[[:en:Pablo de la Llave|Pablo de la Llave]]'' ने काफ़ी शोध किया था. Whence,
    • हैरी पॉटर ने Pensieve के अन्दर Little Hangleton गाँव में लॉर्ड वोल्डेमॉर्ट की माँ Merope Gaunt को देखा

  9. Always start the first 1 or 2 lines of the article giving its definition (from any standard dictionary/other wiki) or suitable introduction. Thus, recommended: ललिता सहस्रनामन हिन्दू धर्मसुधारक आदि शंकराचार्य द्वारा रचित देवी दुर्गा को समर्पित एक पूजा-मन्त्र है, जिसे कई हिन्दू रोज़ श्रद्धा से जपते हैं । But not: ललिता सहस्रनामन मन्त्र जपने के लिये लड्डू-पेड़ा, ताम्बुल, सिन्दूर, लाल चुनरी के साथ नित्य इस मन्त्र का पाठ करें, तो जल्द ही गड़ा हुआ ख़जाना मिलेगा । Recommended: वैमानिक अभियान्त्रिकी (en:Aeronautical engineering) विमानों (en:Aircrafts) की अभिकल्पना, निर्माण और प्रचालन करने का विज्ञान, कला और कार्य है । (translated from Eng. Webster's New World Dictionary). But not: आजकल वैमानिक अभियान्त्रिकी के लिये देशभर में कई कॉलेज खुल गये हैं, जिनमें अग्रणी स्थान यूटोपिया स्थित लालू-यादव टेक्लिनक कॉलेज का है ।
  10. For names of countries, cities, places, languages, people, books, films, technical vocabulary, mythology, etc, start the article like this:
    • 1. The name in bold ('''अपोलो''')
    • 2. starting parenthesis, then English name in Roman script, in-page interwiki-linked to English wiki ff. by semicolon ((अंग्रेज़ी : [[:en:Apollo]];)
    • 3. The native name(s) if applicable in the italicized native script, preferably followed either by its italicized approximate Hindi pronunciation or non-italicized phonological transcription within / /, ff. by closed parenthesis (यूनानी : ''Aπollων अपोल्लोन''))
    • 4. the rest of the definition or introduction (प्राचीन [[यूनानी धर्म]] (ग्रीक धर्म) और प्राचीन [[रोमन धर्म]] के सर्वोच्च देवता थे ।) For country names, only the standard short form of the name is needed in the first line. If there is a common name for a difficult word in Hindustani, also mention it. Whence: अपोलो (अंग्रेज़ी : en:Apollo; यूनानी : Aπollων अपोल्लोन) प्राचीन यूनानी धर्म (ग्रीक धर्म) और प्राचीन रोमन धर्म के सर्वोच्च देवता थे । If you don't give the interwiki English/another language link (which would be deemed to be the default reference), then you MUST provide an appropriate reference.
  11. Please leave no article without an appropriate category. See the list of created categories here; you can also make a new category (pref. in Hindi). Please leave no article without at least ONE off page (like en:) interwiki link. E.g., the user can check the article name (say Apollo) on the finally redirected English page and append to the Hindi article ([[en:Appolo]])). These interlanguage links will help a bot to update all interwiki links for that article in all wikipedias. The category and the aforementioned link should be typed at the end of the article. If the article is very small, mention it as a stub/substub.
  12. Use of templates is welcome. See the list of templates here. If creating a template, name it pref. in Hindi.
  13. Use पूर्णविराम ( । ) instead of a period (.) for ending statements. The पूर्णविराम, semicolon, colon and dash (but not comma) must come after one space after the word to prevent ambiguity. Use the international form of the Hindu-Arabic numerals (1,2,3 instead of १,२,३), as used by the Constitution and the Government of India (even for Hindi). There is no need to use the हलन्त at the end of Sanskrit words wherever it occurs. Hence, prefer: संसद over संसद्; अथर्वन over अथर्वन्. Use the proper quotation marks “” from the Insert toolbox, not "". Write dates as 2 मई 2006 (ईसवी or ईसापूर्व). Write time as 3:45 pm. Separate common suffix-words like शास्त्र, विज्ञान, ज्ञान with a hyphen. Thus: रसायन-शास्त्र. For most others, leave both the words of the noun-cluster free. Combine them into one word only if it is very common to do so. Thus: सामवेद.
  14. The use of ज़ for the en:voiced alveolar fricative (/z/, as in zoo, rose) is fundamentally wrong. Its nearest counterpart is the en:voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ (as in sea), and not Hindi ज (en:voiced palatal plosive). Hence, it is suggested and recommended that for the sound /z/, whether it comes in English (etc.) spellings (z) for while pronunciation otherwise, should be transcribed as स़ (स with a dot below, available in the Insert toolbox). Hence: Reason रीस़न, not रीज़न ; Roses रोस़ेस़, not रोज़ेज़. But common Hindi words borrowed from Persian/Arabic (so-called Urdu words) are allowed to continue with ज़ spelling. Thus: ज़रा, नज़र, तर्ज़. The en:voiced postalveolar fricative (/ʒ/ as in treasure), inexistent in Hindi, can similarly be transcribed with श़. Thus: treasure ट्रॅश़र. The nukta (dot) available in the Insert toolbox can be combined with various consonants to suggest a more exact phonetic devanagari rendering of foreign sounds. E.g., since phonetically, English Think and this are not equal to थिंक and दिस, a better transcription could be थ़िंक and द़िस. Please take care of the dot below in so-called Urdu words, otherwise the Hindi spelling is deemed incorrect.
  15. For the following English vowels met, mate, mat, transcribe as मॅट (short vowel), मेट (not मेइट), मैट (not मॅट, as popular in Marathi). However in contemporary Hindi and here, it is acceptable to use ए instead of ऍ. Thus: अमेरिका is more popular than अमॅरिका. For cot, coat, caught, transcribe as कॉट, कोट, कॉट (not कौट). Transcribe English /t/ and /d/ as ट and ड.
  16. Use half-न before त, थ, द, ध, न, instead of anuswaar अं. Use half-म before प, फ, ब, भ, म. Use the anuswaar before all the rest of the consonants (not half-ङ, ञ, ण). If the मात्रा is not above the alphabet, use chandra-bindu, but only for nasalization. Thus: अन्दर, not अंदर ; अन्त, not अंत ; हिन्दी, not हिंदी ; सम्भव, not संभव ; पंचमी, not पञ्चमी ; अंडा, not अण्डा ; कंठ, not कण्ठ ; लैंड, not लैण्ड ; आँख, not आंख. However, both forms are acceptable in contemporary Hindi as well as here; the prec. are just recommendations.
  17. When proceded by another vowel, use the pure vowels instead of य (unless the य is clearly articulated while pronouncing). Thus : जाएँ, not जायें (not जावें) ; आएगा, not आयेगा . However, both forms are acceptable in contemporary Hindi as well as here.
  18. Please pay careful attention to the masculine/feminine gender (and singular/plural) in adjectives and verbs, else the sentence becomes ungrammatical.

Toolserver[edit]

Hi Purodha!

  • Sorry, I can't seem to be able to see any problems with the table - can you tell me what exactly is wrong with it?
  • I've made the source code for my functions library available here, so please take a look. The function you need is parseWikiTitle(); that one uses getNamespaces(), which is rather a fancy way of caching namespaces for each Wikimedia wiki as they're used. I'm thinking of changing the function to use Duesentrieb's toolserver database (as you might already know, information about all namespaces on all WM wikis are stored there), but for now it seems to work fine. The parseWikiTitle() function doesn't normalize article titles; not all wikis have articles that start with a capital letter, so I think you need to check each wiki (again, the information is available in toolserver) to see if it's necessary. (My function is too lazy to do that ;) ) Of course, you're free to reuse and improve the code in your own tools. If you're wondering what exactly is "defined in layout.php", it is the following:

I was confused by the "Watt ėßß datt?" in the edit summary. I had no idea what it was, and when TW brought up the talk page, and I saw it was a bot, I got even more confused. I decided to leave the mildest template TW had and hope I was doing the right thing. turns out I was the one that goofed. When I saw the edit come back, I left it alone. I am having logins on about 210 Wikipedias at the moment. I made one edit at least on each of those (beyond my user page), almost always adding or altering an interwiki link, or, maybe, several over the time. Whenever I stumble over an opportunity to do something on another language Wikipedia, I do. Of course I am unable to read or understand all those languages, and some scripts. Nevertheless, I am capable to navigate them, using the native language interface almost everywhere, since I memorize where functions are located by screen layout. Also, it does help to use the generic (english) names of some special pages.
I get to the right pages following interwiki link chains, starting from a language I know, usually adding Ripuarian, and possibly others ones, that I have collected along the way. Sometimes, I cannot do what I want, since existing interwiki links and their backwards links are ambiguous. If there are no images, or helpful international words in the foreign language pages, I am lost, and unable to decide what their exact meaning is. I must leave linking these pages to others, then.
I think, or hope, I caught enough of your German, to give a useful answer. By the way, tuten is to honk as with the horn of a car; I believe you meant tuen = tun, which is both to do and some of to make (but not to create) -- so I have choosen to understand what you wanted to say as: Do you do something in all of those languages' wikies? and the answer is Yes as written above. Just tell me if I am wrong, or gave an incomplete answer, or if you want more comments in order to improve your German :-)

Thank you for the hint and for your quick response. I knew of the removal since the bot is running manually controlled. It was indeed a mistake that came from an ambiguation/non-ambiguation page issue. I did not manually correct the mistake knowing that the bot was going to that automatically anyways with this edit which I knew was going to come pretty soon.   1. They are resolved duplicate redirects (-: as the bots edit comment states, which you might not have been able to read :-)
  2. These kinds of redirects exist because Ripuarian does not have a single unified orthography, being a collection of some 120 or so, in part quite distinct, dialects living under 3 different umbrella languages and their respective writing systems. There is a bot automatically creating redirects for some possible spelling variants of existng page titles. Admittedly, it should be subject to some fine tunig for "lengthy" page titles since for those, it created, and in some instances still would create, unnecessary redirects under "unsystematic" spellings. This is currently avoided by a page title length restriction, and shall be done with more sophisticated software algorithms later. As to the question, which spelling variants are really being used: Reseach shows: astonishingly many; some very often, others less so, but still you find instances of nearly all thinkable variants. The biggest advantages of having spelling variants as redirects:
    • we avoide duplicated new articles,
    • we avoid tons of (initially) red links needing manual rework,
    • increased hit rates during article search,

ISO 15924[edit]

Purodha, your mailbox is full, so I am responding to your requests here.

Thank you for your interest in ISO 15924 and your proposal to add a script code for IPA. The Registration Authority has considered this previously.

IPA is not a separate script from Latin. It is a set of extensions to the Latin script, and transcriptions in it are properly considered orthographic spellings. English "bad" may be respelt [bæd] in IPA, but this does not mean that "b" and "d" and "æ" constitute a script other than Latin.

An example from RFC 5646 will make it clearer:

"The tag "en-scotland-fonipa" (English, Scottish dialect, IPA phonetic transcription) is correctly ordered because 'scotland' has a 'Prefix' of "en", while 'fonipa' has no 'Prefix' field."

Similarly en-IE-fonipa would be Irish English written in IPA orthography. You could, redundantly, write en-Latn-IE-fonipa, but since IPA is only Latin anyway, there would be no need to. en-Hebr-IE-fonipa would be meaningless, since fonipa is defined as being IPA orthography, and that is Latin, not Hebrew.

In addition, the rational you gave for requesting a script code for IPA was "A Wikipedia user in need of an internationally accepted standard abbreviation for the IPA Alphabet in order to reference ones own knowledge." This usage scenario is outside the scope of ISO 15924, which is primarily a bibliographic standard. A Wikipedia user box identifying one's knowledge of a script is not really a sufficient reason for adding a code to ISO 15924.

According to German governmental sources, Wendish, Sorbian, Lower Sorbian, and Upper Sorbian are German dialects and slavic varieties at the same time. I know that this is odd from a systematic linguist POV, but obvious from a political one. Since the sorbian dialects are existig under the German umbrella language since centuries, there may be even a little linguistic sense to it which I cannot tell because I know them not enough. Thus, the decision whether or not these languages belon into the category is dependent on the answer to the question whether we use a strict linguist concept of dialect (then the category would be pretty unpopulated) or a wider one which includes long historic traits and is somewhat political, or the "very" political one which includes any language variety living under a German (by language) administration and is not an immigrant language of recent times. Can you link to such governmental sources (I can read German)? At any rate, I think the category should be restricted to those entities that are usually called "Deutsche Mundarten" - including the varieties of Low German (although linguists practically unanimously consider Low German to be a different language), as well as the less controversially included varieties of Central and High German. Even this decision is not without political influence, however, since anything spoken in the Benelux countries is generally excluded from the definition despite the linguistics of the situation. Yiddish is also not considered a German dialect. But there are autochthonous languages in Germany that are not considered German dialects: the Frisian languages, Danish, and the Sorbian languages. I suppose it boils down to whether we're using the word "German" to mean "of the German language" or "of Germany". If we're using it to mean "of Germany", then Austrian German, Swiss German, Pennsylvania German, etc., would have to be excluded from the category, which I think would not be a good idea. Using it to mean "of Germany" would also blur the distinction between Category:German dialects and Category:Languages of Germany. The official recognition of Sorbian as minority languages (not: "national") happened only very recently under the GDR regime. It luckily survived the incorporation of the GDR into the federal republic. There are plenty of pre-WWII sources, including several maps on Wikimedia Commons of "German Dialects" "Dialects of the German Empire" (cf. of, not in) etc. published in the 19th and early 20th centrury, that imply several slavic varies, including Sorbian ones, some Polish ones, some Check ones, some Danish ones, etc. were seen as German dialects (in a political sense; not necessarily in a linguistic sense) This is in part likely owed to the fact that both political personnel and general public were simply uneducated in the linguistic field, and the Prussian and zeitgeist colonist thinking that, "What we inherited and what we conquered, is ours."
Linguistically, Yiddish is a High German variety, even though heavily influenced from various other sources.
I agreee with the idea to categorize languages independently by linguistic and (todays) geographic traits, and went through all varieties of German/Dutch, and related, and subgroups etc. adding the appropriate categories where necessary. I also introduced a somewhat finer granularity: instead of Low German and the very populated category High German languages only, we now have Low Franconian languages, Low German (languages), Central German languages and Upper German languages, the latter two being in the Category:High German languages together with eg. Yiddish and few others which cannot be clearly put into one of its subgroups. When views expressed in literature vary in the last, say 80 or 100 years, which pertains to few small dialect sub...subgroups along the major dialect group borders, I have been leniently putting these dialect subgroups along the margins in either group, so as to ease lookups for those coming here from either schools literature. I did not, however, add this to the article texts not yet having this information, in fact I did not even read many of them. I estimate that this operation increased the member count of said geographical and linguistic categories by several dozen, or about 50% by average, since I found plenty of articles lacking almost all of these categorizations. --Purodha Blissenbach (talk) 13:08, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A word on Low German. At the times before Charlemagne, we had an empire which later was to become the "German Empire" ending in the north shortly east of the Rhine. It included much of todays Belgium and Netherlands but excluded a wide Frisian stripe along the coast extending from (todays) Holland to the north. West of the Rhine, they spoke Old Frankish varieties, while north-east of the Rhine, they spoke Old Saxon, and farther north towards Denmark, a predecessor of Old English. All these languages were related, and thery are assumed to have had good mutual understandability. Charlemagne, coming from the West Franconian Empire, conquered the Saxon Empire, christinazing it, and causing languages to mingle to some extent. Few hunded years, the German Empire was both Saxon and Frankish, while different forces of language development drove north (more Saxon-based German) and south (pre-Austrobavarian-Alamannic based German) apart, with the somewhat more Old Frankonian descendant German varieties of the Center being kind of intermediaries. Current German is to a great extent taken from a southern central German variety (grammar, writing) but spoken according in a predominantly north German way, i.e. similar to Low German. Ok thats is extremely simplified, but it should make clear that separating Low German from German is not easy. Just as an example, in German, we today have three words, zart, sacht, sanft, (all are qualities of "soft"), that derive from a common proto-germanic root, and have come into Standard German via Anglo-Frisian, via Old Saxon/Middle Low German, and via Middle High German. The process of reusing the metal of an abandoned ship for scrap is called das Abwracken in modern German. You can use it for a car as well, but that is less common than die Verschrottung, or das Verschrotten. There are more such pairs of practically synonymous word pairs: die Verbrennung, or das Verbrennen (burning); die Vergnügung, or das Vergnügen (plaesure); die Abholzung, or das Abholzen (felling, deforesting); and likely several hundreds more. They all have in common that the die ...-ung words are of high German origin, wheras the das ...-en words follow Low German onomasiologic rules. Interesting: you cannot say die *Abwrackung. That is not even a pun, it's outright wrong. This ship-related word (and many brethren) comes from Low German only, it does not have a High German counterpart. Btw., there is another not-pair of words, die Abtreibung (abortion) of high German descent, das Abtreiben (drifing away of something in a current of water) of Low German descent. Why do Germans say Binnensee and Binnengewässer (inland lake, inland body of water) but Innenminister and Innenhandel (minister of interior, inland trade)? Answer: The Binnen- words originate from Low German, the Innen- ones from High German. These ones do not come in pairs, they're either or. There is an idiomatic expression in Standard German, Butter bei de Fesch (please speak clearly / be open / honestly / become real) (literally: [Please add some] butter to the fish [in a pan]), which entirely follows Low German lexic and grammar. Its High German version would have to be Butter zu den Fischen but does not exist. I believe, one could continue for hours presenting examples like these, showing that Low German contributed a whole lot to current Standard German. It's on the US of A, literally "Land of the Americans". It calls itself a stub article, and indeed, it is. It gives a brief rundown of the history, starting from the point that today mainly descendants of European immigrants lived there, who had exstinguished most natives, had held deterred Africans as slaves, had become rich from their labour. While not doing that any more, they were still the richmost land on earth, ruling some other parts of it by forces of economy and occasional wars mostly now in Asia. Its inhabitants regarded themselves the most important folks somewhere between god and the rest of mankind and certainly above the pope (here you have to know that this is somewhat reminiscent of several local stories and legends and carries a connotation of self-irony: Hey, they can be as bold as we!) They called themselves Christians but their "pope" was called "president" and elected in a somewhat democratic looking way, where one needs huge amounts of money to spent to have a chance. Last, a superficial parallel is drawn between the "old world" role of the Roman Empire which brought culture "to us", and the current role of the USA in the world. That's about it. Although the article lists sources, they are not specific about page numbers referred to, or cited inline, to aid in verification of claims. Given the academic nature of these sources, one acceptable citation format can be parenthetical, at the end of a paragraph. Example: {Hoenig, p. 202).
